Warning for all Taboola users...

I just got slapped by Taboola for using a replacement ad network on one of my sites. Taboola are in the practice of luring you into an exclusivity agreement which basically means if their ads underperform (which they did, quite badly) you can't replace them with a better ad network without 24 months. They will stop paying out if you replace their ads or use another CPM ad provider side-by-side with their ads, and I am now left with many hundreds of earnings owed by Taboola which they have no intention of paying out to me... you have been warned! They became quite hostile to me too when I quite innocently switched my ad network.

I believe other ad networks do this crafty trick as well. They will not mention this to you when you sign up, unless you read the very fine print... and sure you should always read the fine print.. but really, who has the time??

It's hardly surprising that they don't point out any potential pitfalls. It really is up to you to do your due diligence and obviously you didn't.

It's ridiculous the amount of threads that spring up here saying "XYZ banned me/closed my account/won't pay me" and when you take a closer look it's all because the OP didn't read or adhere to the particular site's TOS.

I am honestly sorry for you if you've worked hard to earn those dollars and now find yourself in the position of probably not getting them but the only person to blame is you.

I don't know your whereabouts, your financial situation, the legal liabilities or anything like that. You may, only may have a case that if they badly underperformed against what they 'contracted' to do they were breaching their own contract but this is something that only a lawyer can help you with and quite frankly it may cost more to consult the lawyer than you will get if Taboola settled in full.

The decision is yours. Do you throw good money after bad?

I hope it works out for you.

Expected harsh response... and very easy for you to say. But seriously, you spend all day reading fine print for ever T&C you may or may not be directed toward?

Anyway the claims of Taboola for matching or even out performing Adsense are clearly fabricated. I could not get even close to Adsense, after spending many hours on the phone to their support people to optimise my sites to their own best advice.

When the ads don't produce respectable revenue, the reply is always the same... you should optimise more, and yet more again.. to the point where your content is completely surrounded by Taboola units, visitor experience is down the toilet, compliants are coming thick and fast and still you can't earn anything like Adsense. I'm glad to be rid of them TBH.

Is there any particular reason why you went for them as opposed to, say, Adsense? I'm not trying to be harsh and I'm honestly not a great fan of Google but as they are far and away the market leaders I wonder why you didn't go for them.

And, yes, I know it's a pain to read T&C but it's your income. Why not 'waste' a few hours so you can avoid getting your account banned.

However, if what you say is right about their support people and their level of revenue, then yes, you probably are better off without them.
