$150/day average in 2 month - whoohoo!!

Just wanted to tell my story as a motivation to people who are new to CPA.

I have some background in html design, and some history with playing with affiliate marketing. A friend of mine does PPC and he's been helping me with some tips. I started out about a month and a half ago.

I'm currently averaging about $150/day (some days are crap, like today, others can go as high as $300+) doing PPC to landing page to offer using CPA free trials. I've had some ups and downs, but I have to say this was amazingly 'easy' relatively speaking, considering the short amount of time that took to reach what basically could replace a full time job's salary!

I'm still not feeling very secure in it, as I'm running only 3 offers, but looks very promising! Here's the formula, and it's not rocket science:

1) talk to your affiliate managers as far as what offers are hot and converting. You do not want to start with an offer that you have no idea if it sells. Establishing a good relationship with them never hurts. I'm signed up with a bunch of networks, but I'm currently working with Lidango.com. Their payouts are pretty impressive compared to some of the bigger players.

2) once you have an offer, go to google/yahoo/msn and search for keywords that are related to the niche. See the landing pages and ad types that are showing up on the results. Build something along the same lines.

3) keywords - this is where I think people will have the hardest time. You need to be willing to spend some money to test out keywords. Use tools like the adwords keyword tool, and words that come to your mind as starting points. Let those run to about 1.5 times the value of the revenue of the CPA. So for instance if you earn $30 per CPA, you have to be willing to run a keyword up to $45 or so. You can see how if you have 50 keywords, this could amount to 50*$45=$2250! so you *have* to have some budget to go with at first otherwise you're not going anywhere. Hopefully you will see some sales generated by some of those keywords sooner than later.

4) So now you have offers that you know are converting for someone else. You have ads and landing pages formats that other people are using (a tool like PPC Bully or Google Cash Detective can help you with this, but I haven't used them personally). Once you have some sales, test everything. Bump up bid prices for the keywords you're getting success with. If the network allows for pixel tracking, that is also helpful, as you'll be able to see the revenue and costs right on your adwords/yahoo/msn interface. Using a tool like tracking202 also can achieve this.

Hope this helps. This is the exact process that has worked so far for me. I'm feeling pretty confident that I can boost this to $1k/day, but we'll see, I'll keep you guys updated.

Thanks for the inspiring post. PPC is really a great way to make a lot of money in cpa, but like you said, it takes a lot of money in testing to find the winning keywords, landing pages, etc.

For those new to cpa that dont have a budget, I would start with other free traffic methods like offline, video, article, etc. Earn funds, re-invest in methods and ppc, earn more, re-invest more..repeat repeat

    Thanks for the motivational story!

I like your idea, but I am thinking if its a good idea to earn from a low paying niche and re-invest in a higher paying niche.

Cool thread, toro. Thanks for sharing this without expecting us to buy your ebook. LOL

I was going to ask how you decided on a landing page style but I see that you had a look at your competitors and got some ideas. Good stuff.

About zip/email submits, I've done some of those and I did manage to get them profitable by targeting the cheaper keywords en masse. But my profit margins were pretty narrow so I would have to have a lot of campaigns running to make good money. Other people make lots from them, but it never quite clicked for me. Now I'm building some minisites to target them via SEO, since their payout is so low free traffic is nice.

Yes I was using adwords. However, my account got banned by the infamous google money tree slap (from an offer I was using earlier). So now I'm working with the two ppc companies. There's definitely other methods of advertising like Kenster says, but I'd venture to say that the fastest way is ppc. video, article marketing is a bit like SEO - the work you put into it might not translate into success until later on, and I think especially in the beginning you need some sort of success to keep you going. A friend of mine also started doing pretty much the exact same thing i did, except he played safer and didn't run a budget on ppc at all. Sure he got a sale or two for $30/each here and there, on expenses of $2-3 (so, incredible ROI) but he just didn't feel like he was onto a formula for success.

Great job! People don't understand how easy it is to get $100-$200 daily with CPA. It just takes a strategy and some action.

Now scale the hell out of that and squeeze as much money as you can out of those campaigns. Rinse and repeat.

    Don't ever quit.

Before I quit I made sure that I had at least 6-8 months of "emergency money" and that I was making money consistently for at least 3 months.

You never know when you will get a Google slap or have issues with your CPA network.

I quit and the end of last year. I went from losing money, to making 20 per day, to a 100, per day, then 500, then because I had found something solid that worked, I was able to scale up and use other traffic. By end of 2009, I was making what I used to make in 6 months working, that was enough for me to make the jump to full time.

I will say one thing though, I was building a list the whole time. Anything else is building on sand. Even when the offers stop, I still have a base. I can tell you the list helps on those " crap days " you mention, and yes we all get them .

      Keep at it

      Kev

I would say once you are comfortable knowing that you can repeat your success, then go for the full time leap. You dont want to quit your day job when you find a one hit wonder just to get google slapped or the offer expires, etc. I would also have multiple cash flow positive campaigns running before I quit.

CPA is a great way to make great money if you know what youre doing, and it sound like you do.

    To your success

That's definitely what I'm looking to do - constant profit margins, multiple revenue streams split over several different kinds of offers. I've been running these two campaigns with between $80-250 profit margins so far for the past few weeks, and speak of the devil, yesterday was a 0 profit day! I think the problem is/was with the fact that the offer seems to be loading really slow, and people click out before it loads. Has this been a situation anyone has faced in the past?

You must be new to CPA. Just sign up for any of the networks (such as Lidango) and check their offers. Most CPA offers are centered around health, bizops and mobile. They pay around 30-40 per CPA, and it costs the user only $1.95-2.95 per free trial....

Wrong. It costs them a lot more than that. Recurring charges which are almost impossible to cancel, sign-ups to other services which are hidden in the small print - why do you think the advertisers can pay $30 to $40 per lead (+ a fee to the network) for a trial which costs $2 or $3? Because their advertising is deceptive. These 'free trials' often end up costing the user a lot of money and result in a lot of complaints to the FTC.

I just had the best day so far yesterday - check this screenshot (with a little plug for lidango since they've been awesomely responsive with getting my pixels working). Note that this is revenue, not profit, but still.

I'm pretty sure that today won't be as high - and I still don't feel comfortable running a single offer. My goal was to break 20 leads a day, so I'm gonna celebrate at some fancy schmancy restaurant!...

    Wow, pretty awesome work here.

Do you think that you'd earn more promoting the paid offers through PPC, rather than using incentives for the free offers? (EG, submits.)
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[1071607].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author toro73
I'm currently promoting free trials through PPC alone. I'm not sure what you're referring about incentives.

BTW - I've had only 7 leads so far today (3pm PST). A far cry from the 21 I got yesterday. I'm barely at a profit.

Ups and downs, this industry. I'm hoping to chronicle my journey to hopefully $1k profit/day in this thread. Stay tuned

Presumably the free trials require a credit card submit? I was referring to offers that don't require a CC.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[1071993].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author toro73
Right, I am working with free trials with cc submit. I'm pretty new at this as I mentioned, so I haven't worked with anything else. I'd imagine that running email/zip submits that pay $1-2 per lead would require you to bid on low cpc keywords. I guess it could work if you get clicks at 0.10-0.30 and get $1-$2 that's could be a pretty good ROI. I think I prefer to work with specific more expensive offers tho. How do you target keywords for 'victoria's secret gift card', that wouldn't be targetted as well by people selling the actual product?

I don't really think it's that easy just to open up another adwords account. In any case Adwords is going to pretty much crack down on all those free trial rebill offers at some point, so I think that you are going down the right track right now on using Yahoo and MSN. If you're having success with thse now, there is no need to change it up.. :-)

This was very motivational, and I will most likely add cpa+ppc to my income streams.

My tip for you if you want to quit your job, will be to learn even more about cpa, scale out, and build profit streams from different sources. Like creating your own product, having affiliates sell it for you etc.

That will give you a lot more safety if you want to quit your job. And like Nato says, keep some emergency money.

A couple of quick questions that comes to mind: I have a couple of sites in 2 different niches which should be ready by the weekend, how soon after they've been up, can I apply to CPA networks? And to monetize my site, what would be the best thing to do? have google ads on it + cpa offers or just cpa offers and no google ads on the site?

    Thanks,

I've read some ebooks, but it always lacks a critical component. In fact, even in my little tutorial, it's really about testing. I know media buy guys who spend thousands of dollars per day testing out their landing pages across multiple sites, and then narrowing it down to the ones that convert at a profit. Thousands of dollars a day!... that's insane for me! They run at a loss for a while, but it eventually as you narrow down on the sites that work, you start breaking into the profitability line. Same thing with keywords.

Doing SEO is great, I used to be in affiliate marketing since 2001 doing Amazon products. (and I still have a site that does maybe $100/month free of maintenance). But It's slow, tedious, and you're at the mercy of the search engines when they decide to change the algorythm. PPC/Media buying you have a much clearer picture of where you stand.

Yesterday I was only up $40. Today is looking much better. Since I'm keeping the niche hidden, yes, I am running at about 100% ROI today, and I'm at close to $200ish profit.

Using PPC to run offers can be a nerve wrecking experience. I keep refreshing the stats to see when the next lead is coming in. There are times when a whole hour goes by without a single lead, and yet you see the clicks adding up. Sometimes you'll get 2-3 leads in the space of minutes, and then you're happy and all is well.

To those who have inquired with me over pm about coaching, I'm afraid there is no real secret to PPC/CPA beyond what I just delineated here. I understand it can be a scary world out there venturing into this without much experience, but two thirds of the secret formula I've already written about. I didn't use any 'tricks' to get high quality score or whatnot. You talk to to your affiliate manager and inquire about a good performing offer. You go to the search engines, and you look at what affiliates are putting out there and you create something similar. And you test the keywords. Compare this to doing it some other way: you pick an offer without talking to anyone. You build a page according to what you think would be cool or fancy. Then you throw some keywords at it. You get zero conversions. What went wrong? Was it the offer? was it the landing page? was it the keywords? by using something that's (somewhat) proven out there, you reduce the unknown factor by a very large quantity. You know the offer will be good because the affiliate manager wants the same thing you do. Even go as far as asking the affiliate manager if he can point to examples of good converting pages!.. all you have to do is get to the keywords! it's-that-simple! (and yet, nerve wrecking, see above - because your money is on the line). However, simple does not mean easy. Or costly. That is where people will cave in before they have success.

When I first started at cpa, I put aside $1000 in a separate business bank account. That was going to be my starting PPC cash. I was ready to burn through that cash. Luckily it didn't end up being so. Your mileage may vary of course. Put some money aside, and resign yourself to spending it all if needed be. When bidding, start with low bid prices. Dont go for high positions. It'll take longer to get you enough clicks, but you'll be able to (at least mentally) last longer. Think of roulette or blackjack, do you want to play with $1 chips or $5? how rich is your blood?

If you are really set in seeking some sort of coaching, I'd recommend you sign up for something specific, like PPC related classes like PPC Classroom (and I've only heard of them by word of mouth, so I can't vouch for them, but I recall it being good reviews - do you own diligence!). I do have a full time job still, so I cannot dedicate any time to teaching others beyond what I can write here on the forum. Feel free to ask questions on this thread, or use the forum as well, that's what it's here for!

But I think it was mentioned here somewhere that it was free trials, but you had to pay for shipping, and I think that makes it more legit in the search engines eyes.

It depends on what your website is about. Lol! Is it a dating forum? Is it an "**** berry blog"? Is it a gaming website? Do you get where I'm going?

Which offers you choose to promote on your site, should match the niche of it. 30,000 uniques has plenty of potential, but if they aren't targeted, nor responsive, it might be better to stick with normal advertising, or CPM.

This is really interesting and open to some debate. I can see how one side feels this way and yet others feel another. Personally, it's very hard to say. I think I'm not going to take a stand on this yet. Curious to see what others feel.

I use adwords for a niche that I can find MANY of the same type of offers for, and throw my links into the posts with unique content.

It looks like my blog is about "baseball" but I have a different affiliate link in every post to a different product!

This works for me and I've never been slapped!

So once again obvious BS and non-replying just broad question (answer will not contain any niche secret info or so).

    Facts

    1) You are using PPC from big 3, none of them allow free trials.
    2) You are making money from it.

So if you reveal it it will probably close your business. It's OK and I got you. But why to share with others by making this post anyway then ? It doesn't make any sense.
LoL - seolinker, are you for real? someone got a big chip on your shoulder. My only point was to let people know that you can make money out of this. I'm not selling anything, I'm not mentoring anyone, and I laugh at your attitude. Sometimes people need a little boost and to see the light at the end of the tunnel and that they can get there. What were you expecting me to reveal here in public? my landing page/offer/ad/keywords?

As for yahoo or msn or adwords not allowing free trials, anyone with two eyes can go check the search engines and find there are lot of free trial offer affiliates out there. Google is the hardest clamping down on them, but by all means they're not airtight. (plus, I am not running on google anyway).

Tell you what, pm me and I'll show you and only you what I'm doing, only because I feel the need to prove myself to you that I'm not lying and that I am making money.

Things that happened today - had 50 clicks and zero leads. I found out that the offer page was taking twelve (12!!) seconds to load. No wonder there were zero conversions. As soon as I brought it up to my AM, he got in touch with the advertiser and they did some magic, and wham, 3 leads in less than 10 clicks.

The other thing - one of my Yahoo campaigns which so far had been spending maybe $10-20 a day suddenly boosted to $100+ in a few hours. Net result , zero (or close to zero for all intents and purposes) dollars profit (maybe like $30). Lesson learned: gotta keep an eye on everything! Your campaigns, your site, your offer!...

Did you ever figure out why this happened? I'm guessing you spend between .75 - $2 per click ...adds up fast.

For the sake of not reading through this thread again...do you send traffic to your landing page or their offer directly?

At least say that you are lucky or just cloak affiliate links or do some other backup in order not be find out. Cause many newb will follow by your inspiration and with very BIG possibility will get banged. That's what I mean. You are doing good with it - fine, but you heared my concerns.
DUDE - I just got back from the bars. I met these really hot chicks. Wish I had asked for their numbers. Ok, completely on a tangent. Listen to my words - I don't cloak. I have a landing page just like dozens of other landing pages you can find for the same offer I run. Article, blog or review, take your pick. It's all 100% legit (as legit as rebills can be). There's no secret bidding techniques, no secret landing page techniques, and keyword research was done with common sense and adwords tools. That's all. I'm not saying that if you pick a random niche and apply the same strategy you'll get the same success, but I *am* saying that success can be obtaining by sticking to the basics. No ebooks, no gurus, no blackhat.

    Gotta finish my beer. Later!

So you need to have a
    1) Hosting Account
    2) Have a landing page?
    3) Do you capture the leads or do you pass straight to the offer?
    1) yes
    2) yes
    3) the type of offers I am currently working with do not allow for capturing of them, so my landing page just has straight affiliate links to the offer page. Ideally I'd like to start working with offers that do allow for my own site to capture them. Anyone know of any niches/specific companies that work with captured leads, please pm me?

BTW, I should also say, I built a review site for a different niche (satellite tv for pc software) but that didn't fare so well. So, there are failures within the successes, I thought it's important to disclose those as well.

      Hi Toro73..
can you explain more on your landing page?you say that it has straight affiliate links to the offer page..does your landing page looks like a "story telling" , review page, or just some picture on it?

and lastly how you drive traffic to it?

    Hi

This thread is great. Not only is it very intriguing it is also quite amusing due to seolinkers banter!!
I am new to this forum but i do have some affiliate experience. A few questions if you please:

    1. What is a Google slap, why do you get one? (This is new to me).
    2. Is using PPC the normal way to generate traffic for CPA trials? I use adwords for my online shop / business so i dont want to run the risk of losing this facility - although i am very excited by all this. I definitely want to have a go but i need to know what NOT TO DO!
Can anyone give an example of a CPA landing page? I would like to have a closer look but cant find anything specific - not sure if it is for a trial or not - i dont want to submit any details!!!

Great post toro - thanks again.

Great post toro - thanks again.

I agree that this is a good thread man!

      1. Here is an example of the Google slap: You set up a campaign on AdWords, write a few ads, pick some keywords and let it run.
It runs for a few days with each keyword costing you 0.15 for examples sake.
One day Google finds something about your campaign, ad or landing page that it doesn't like and they start charging you 0.40 a click.
The simple secret is: take the time to carefully read the AdWords rules/terms. Do exactly what they say and want.
Others will be able to expand further on this issue.

      2. PPC is the fastest way to get ultra targeted traffic when you want to promote CPA offers.
You could try your best to advertise your website for free everywhere you can, pay for banner advertising on others sites, put a sticker on your car but if you pump some money into PPC you will see results in an hour or less. It is just a matter of tuning your campaigns in hope to get the best quality score possible. This includes adhering to all the rules, using relevant keywords in relevant ads that point to relative landing pages with again, relative keywords. Relevancy is perhaps the most important thing when it comes to using AdWords (I haven't tried MSN and Yahoo). The better your quality score the cheaper your clicks will be.

To find a CPA landing page, first register with a CPA network, choose an offer to promote and then search for the offer on Google and go to the websites that are promoting the same offer.

      Hope this helps

Thanks for the info.. I have one more question! I have 3 lists. 1 in the health and fittness niche approx 25k, 1 in investment niche approx 100k and another in finance - mortgages / insurance etc approx 100k. I have these lists due to companies i worked with over the past few years. Do you think i should focus on them rather than throwing money at PPC? So many people on this forum seem to loose far more than they earn using PPC! I currently mnage 2 PPC campaigns which seem to be working well but applying it to CPA seema a little worrying!

obviously you have never been slapped by google becasue they will start charging you $5.00-$10.00 a click and reduce your quality score to 1/10.

also reading adwords rules/terms is a waste of time as they have not updated it since 2006 and since then they change there rules/terms every few months.

If you have your max CPC set at $0.15 how is it possible that Google can suddenly decide to charge you $0.40 per click?

I've never understood this, isn't that semi-illegal, or at least unethical, for them to charge you more than your max bid is set at?

As a newbie, I'm not sure I understand the difference between PPC and CPA- You mean you get paid every time the product you promote is bought by someone and you pay every time your ad is being clicked on(like on Adwords)?

      Viv,
CPA is cost per action/aquisition. You make money with CPA each time someone takes the requested action on your offer be it submitting their email address, zip code, both or their first name or simply by filling out a survey or any other short info. No need for a purchase to occur for you to get paid.

After you've signed up with a CPA network, you'll be assigned an affiliate manager and you'll receive their contact info. That's how you can chat/talk to them. Hope this clarifies things.

Wow, I just read this entire thread!

Congrats on your success, looks like you probably have a really targeted PPC Campaign. That is awesome. Are you tracking down to the keyword with a sub-id to know which are converting and which aren't? Just curious.

Thanks for keeping us posted, look forward to watching your progress. I have been building up my daily earnings in CPA as well, and it's quite fun.

Someone said that you don't make as high conversions with free traffic, that is true if it's not super targeted. I have seen very high EPC's with targeted "free" traffic. Being super targeted and testing is key. Thanks warriors....

Where did toro73 go? Kinda interesting we haven't heard from him...

I like that seolinker has been told us that the site is one of those fake sites (flogs). I mean, the government is really cracking down on those, going after affiliates for fake reviews. It's a pretty big deal. I wouldn't want them knocking on my door for a few thousands bucks.

Last post from Toro was 5 weeks ago. Wonder what happened.

I just read every single post. No one answered the question. Do Yahoo and MSN permit PPC to these trial CPA offers? It is a simple question. If yes, then wow Toro, great. If no, then I guess he was lucky and will probably be shut down if he hasn't been already.

      Hey Jonathan,
I think you can run some fine.... I am running a CPA trial offer through Yahoo without any problems. I am not currently running anything through my MSN, but I used to promote a free + shipping offer through them without any problems.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I have been running stuff on these PPC networks.

      Sincerely,
      Tim Davis

the only thing that is shady with the OP first post is that he is telling you to pretty much rip off someone else's landing page. It happens to us alot and we take it as part of the game. Just surprised you guys didn't pick up on that.

After getting banned from Adwords, which other PPC networks are you currently using with success now? Adwords are getting very strict with regards to people promoting affiliate offers using their advertising platform.

It is a three year old thread. Although some of the information might be useful, be careful about assuming that the techniques are relevant.

We all know that in the IM world changes are made often and it's usually not a good idea to follow a plan that worked three years ago.

Exactly right. This technique will be hard to pull off now a days without getting banned from Google or BingYahoo. You would 100% need to cloak your page in order to not get banned for life. For those of you reading, if your google account is worth a lot to you, DO NOT attempt this method. You will be banned for life by google

Thank you for the advice and congratulations for your success.....

Method still efffective, but you gonna have to likely build out your landing page into a full blown blog and be choosy with the offer.
