Why does peerfly require photo ID to join?

I'm a member on a few networks, and decided to join peerfly because they run certain types of offers that I'd like to try on my own business.

I was asked for photo ID, either a drivers license or a passport. I own neither of these and asked if I could send other forms of ID instead. I was denied because I can't provide the required ID.

Their reasons are to avoid fraud. Or so they say. I don't get this, because a fake drivers license or passport can be purchased and faked just as easy as a bank card, birth certificate or utility bills.

If somebody wants to gain access to something and fraud a system they will do it anyway, regardless of what protections are in place. At the end of the day the fraudster risks prison time and loss of earnings, plus a lawsuit. That's not something I'm interested in doing lol.

It's not an issue as I can continue to use my other networks. It's just puzzling how companies believe a passport or drivers license is proof you're that person. Maybe in the US checks can be done, but I'm in the UK and those sorts of checks can't be done unless you're a police officer or a person of authority.

I work in security for my day job. It's more of a risk to be storing passports and drivers licenses on a server than it is to rely on them as a form of ID over the internet.

    Hey James

How about you send them a scanned copy of your drivers license or utility bill ... but you blank out any ID numbers and other too sensitive data? That might might be acceptable to the network but best to verify this with your account manager and quickly ask for clarification just in case.

I think they might only want to verify the person is indeed the right person they will send the commissions to and in order to clamp down on fraud, so I understand where they are coming from as well.

      Hey Nick,

I don't mind sending them any data they require but the problem is I don't have a drivers license or a passport. Sounds crazy I know, but I can't drive due to a medical condition so I've never needed one. I've never left the UK and have never needed a passport.

I've asked if I can send my bank card, utility bills, birth certificate etc. Just waiting on their response.

This is due to the high amount of fraud. If you have an issue with this, you can always contact them and discuss another way around this.

Money laundering and compliance rules. It's pretty standard these days.

I'm glad this was sorted. We have required an ID for years and it's not as easy to fake as you would think (we catch fakes all the time) It is a great way to help prevent fraudsters from getting in our network and as you've seen, we are willing to work with you to make sure we aren't missing an opportunity to work with a great publisher just because of this requirement.

I wrote an article in 2011 on why we require an ID and it's still relevant: The ID on your PeerFly Application

Affiliates committing fraud is a thing worrying networks since a long time, so they need to make sure that they do their due diligence when it comes to screening affiliates properly. They will just need it to verify that the person who has applied to the network is genuine and not some fraudster.
