You're watching a five-minute video of a corgi running around a garden, when suddenly a warning pops out saying, "Ad playing in 5 seconds." Annoying, right?

Now the Coalition for Better Ads announced that they have developed a Better Ads Standard for "short-form video for desktop, mobile web, and in-app environments", and will improve consumer online experience. The Standard will apply to ad experiences that appear in short-form videos or those which are 8 minutes or less.

There will be three short-form video ad experiences under the Better Ads Standard:

Mid-roll ads.
Pre-roll ads or pods longer than 31 seconds that can't be skipped in the first 5 seconds.
Non-linear display ads that are in the middle of 1/3 of a playing video or are larger than 20% of the video content.

Neal Thurman, director of the Coalition for Better Ads, said, "The Coalition for Better Ads is pleased to add this new Standard to our tools to help the online ad industry improve the experience for consumers."

About time disruptive ads are regulated. While I understand the nature of ads, I just hate it when they become disruptive that they start blocking content.

Chime in.
