Google Referral Ads going away

I might be really late to the party, but I just found out that Google Referral ads are going away.

In the past I've earned some good money from them. Dang.


Here is what they say:


During the last week of August, the AdSense referrals feature will be retired for both AdWords advertiser products and Google products. After careful consideration, we believe that we can best serve our advertisers and publishers through two alternative offerings, AdSense for content and DoubleClick Performics Affiliate.

Beginning in late August, any remaining referral ads on your site will no longer work, and will appear as blank space on your website. In order to prevent a decrease in your AdSense earnings, we strongly encourage you to replace all referral ad code on your sites with AdSense for content ad code prior to the last week of August. You can get this ad code by signing in to your AdSense account, selecting the AdSense Setup tab, and choosing AdSense for content as the product.

    From everything that was indicated - it appears that these were just too much of a conflict with PPC - the BIG money maker at google... This was a way to kill the goose that laid the golden egg so to speak. They were not putting their heart into this - probably gathered some interesting data though - to show to their big ad customers to tell them that PPC is better for them.

    The other big push at google is of course the doubleclick cookie - so they are goind to have more network wide data on user behavior to sell big customers. They are nearly a monopoly as it is....

      Referrals were really good at the beginning. I made quite a lot from them but it started to suck after that.

      Doesn't really matter much now to me whether it remains now or not

        I was very exited about recommending people to download Firefox with google toolbar and get dollar for each, but now it's gone...And i couldn't even start referring people!!! LOL

        Guess i got there too late....

          Why is it that every time a big company does something "to serve you better", you get screwed?

          How does it serve us better to not let us get paid for referring advertisers to them?

          To serve myself better, I stopped spending time on Adsense.

          Guess i got there too late....
          I am really hoping that the Firefox referrals re-appear somewhere and soon as I make a couple bucks a day on them.

            The programs probably aren't going away, just being moved. With the DoubleClick acquisition they have a real CPA network now, they don't need two. Eventually the DoubleClick assets and AdWords will be better integrated and we'll have referrals back... with many more offers from big advertisers than we had.

              That's great to know...

              I was not happy with their tracking somehow. Hopefully, they will have more advertisers and good tracking software.
