I devote the whole day for now. Let's say 12 hours or more. 2 months this way, because it is now literally my main occupation (lots of raw distractional research, learning, testing with not much results though of yet). All the motivational stuff is here, all the info is here. Action is of the top priority. So, keep on rocking.

    5 mins??

not sure, what i find interesting is to find out how many actual hours people work, it's easy to say 'i worked 7-7', however in that time, how much time was spent socializing, talking on AIM, etc, etc.. i find that my one killer, when i added up how much time i was wasting, then decided it's time to turn off AIM (aside from occasional business use), limit e-mails, limit website visits, etc..

This is a great point. I bet if you had a stopclock sitting right next to you and only had it running when you were doing something productive towards your affiliate marketing, the results would shock a lot of people.

And, when people drift in and out of different activities like social networking, emailing, chatting on WF, etc...the overall work is less efficient and effective because it takes time to get back into the groove of what you were doing.

I spend only about 6 hours a day 5 days a week on IM. I know that some marketers work 10 hours a day 7 days a week, but what's the benefit of making money and having no time to use it? I try not to be a slave of my work, so I think that 6/5 is more than enough!

William, I subscribed to this philosophy starting in January of this year and it has been great. The reason I got into IM was so I wouldnt have to work ridiculous hours. The crazy thing was that when I started slashing the amount of time I worked, my profits didnt dip at all. In fact, quite the opposite happened. It forced me to really focus on just the important aspects of my business...the income producing activities, the profit centers.

Working just to work will get you nowhere. Just because you put in 12 hours a day doesnt mean you will make twice as much as somebody who puts in 6 hours a day and doesnt even mean you make more than that person at all. Working in itself doesnt make you money...what you are working on does.

What I have learned among other things on my journey, is to always pay very close attention to every activity you do within your business. Examine how different activities will affect other parts of your business and ultimately how it will affect your bottom line. The key to growing a business (in my opinion) is not necessarily decreasing your work hours, but rather making sure you are maximizing the added value of your hours, no matter how many they are.

Work smart but also work hard. Dont just work to work.

Seems like some pretty healthy work schedules from those who have shared thus far!

Agree 100%. I know that it's all about money for many (most) people, but not for me. Of course, it's amazing to have money in the pocket, but the best thing about being an affiliate is the freedom. I can go wherever I want whenever I want. No boss, to commitments, no companies, no time to go to work... This is the lifestyle that I have chosen for myself, and being a slave of my computer just to make some extra money doesn't seem to be a good option.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter if you make $3k or $300K a month online, the most important thing is that you are actually living the internet lifestyle, which is not being a rich guy who spends 25 hours a day in front of a computer, but a guy who lives a good life without working 9 grueling hours every day in an office solving somebody else's problems.

If I would have to guess its because you can't really outsource let's say a $300/day ppc campaign to india, can you? or even more...I've seen some guys doing media buys of $7k/day pretty hard to find some1 that you can trust with that data.

and another thing is that most of them don't want to trough the trouble of getting an office, training people so that they know only what they need to etc...

I'm not even close to situations like that, but that's how it seems from looking at the industry.

If your more of an seo guy, then that's a whole other story.

I think you guys both make very valuable points here. YES, automation and outsourcing is very imoprtant in this business. This is how you scale and grow small campaigns, this is the power of the internet. The whole point is trying to leverage the insane amounts of people on the internet.

But, automation and outsourcing becomes tricky, particularly in the CPA space. Campaigns are assets and campaigns can bring in massive amounts of money.

Campaigns are in many cases easy to replicate. This creates a problem when you try outsourcing your campaigns, because trust is a huge issue. It has been probably my singlemost obstacle in my business.

For many sensitive projects, one thing you can try to do is this...

Outsource pieces of the project to completely seperate parties, so nobody except yourself has all the pieces to the puzzle. Perhaps if there are 5 steps, you outsource each of the 5 steps to 5 different people. Each of these people wont know what you are doing because they are missing the other 4 pieces. This protects your asset. At the same time, it means more work for you. It means you need to keep track of 5 outsourcers and need to consolidate all the work from the 5 people. So, it does come with more work, but I would much rather put in a little more work to make sure my assets are protected.

With CPA this is very difficult because of how interrelated the pieces of the puzzle are. If you outsource the tracking, this person will know what your landing page looks like and know your keywords. If you outsource your landing page development, then this person will likely need to know your keywords so they can build optimized landing pages. So, its hard to piecemeal your campaigns to protect your assets while outsourcing your CPA campaigns.

But every business has its challenges. You do the best that you can and things will work out. Thats my philosophy at least.

Really depends on your buisness model. If you write articles and focus on SEO for a living(which is a bad buisness model, making your company's bottom line dependent on Google, Yahoo etc) then you will spend close to 24/7 doing all this stuff yourself unless you outsource which will cost you quite alot of money.

If you go down the paid route, obviously it has its own little challenges and pitfalls but focus on list building then how much time you spend is really dependent on you, since most of your work will be split testing squeeze pages, cpa offers and tangible/intangible product promotions via email, which do not require as much work to complete.

I prefer the paid route, much faster, more versatile and contrarian to popular belief, is nowhere near as expensive as people make it out to be, consider the following scenario:

You go down the free route, you build websites that are dependent on Google, in the process you spend thousands of dollars on outsourcing and SEO just to have Google change their algorithm, running the risk of losing your serps, or they decide they dont like you and you wind up de-indexed.

In the process of this happening, you lose everything and now have to start from scratch which in the long run will cost you even more since the risk of your rankings dissapearing will never go away.

Where as the advertising route, IF you do your research and start of small and slowly scale your campaigns up if they become profitble, there is less risk money wise in the long term(believe it or not) depending on your advertising platform.

Thats a lot of time man. Are you utilizing those hours in the most efficient way possible? If so, you are sure on your way to success fast if you havent reached it yet.

If you arent using those hours efficiently and effectively, then I would highly suggest looking into all the activities you do and making sure you are optimizing your time.

This is something I do and something I have seen a lot of successful IMers do.

Literally write out your schedule on paper and never sway from it. I personally work for chunks of time and then give myself numerous breaks to check out the forum here and to do other non work related activities. I will never do anything personal if its within my WORK timeslot.

Further, one thing I do now is to set a certain time of the day to check emails and never sway from that either. If I dont get through all my emaisl, oh well, I take a look at the subject lines and unless I think its urgent, I will wait until I am done with all my work and then maybe try and finish up my emails.

Emails can be a huge distraction.

But the point here is to be productive with whatever time you put in.

I used to be proud of working such long hours.... then I read the 4 Hour Work Week and it screwed up my grind.... don't read it, or you'll start looking for purely leveraged business models.

Depends on your goals though, I would rather make 10-20k a month working only a few hours a week* than 100k a month working 80 hours a week. Really I'd rather live somewhere laid back like Costa Rica or Thailand, I'm more about peace of mind than fancy stuff.

*disclaimer, I'm still putting in lots of hours but trying to accomplish something else with those hours. Also, I'm pretty certain Ryan Eagle makes more than me.

Tim Ferriss and 4 Hour Work Week

See I think the book can be a blessing just as much as the curse you think it is. One one hand, you are absolutely correct, much of the book makes it seem like no matter what you are doing, you should outsource as much as possible and this I would imagine will often lead to very thin and as you say over-leveraged businesses.

But on the other hand, the core essence behind the book is pretty powerful. Many of the points are great. He talks about efficiency, trying to maximize your time on revenue producing tasks, not menial, tedious tasks, using technology effectively and not letting it be counter-productive. These are all good points.

In my personal opinion, I liked the book a lot but as a serial entrepreneur, I am full aware of the work and effort involved in creating a business...turning an idea into something tangible and alive. In my personal opinion, you need to work your darn butt off from the start and its not until the business is matured enough that you can really implement a lot of what he says. But, bringing a business from infancy involves a ton of work, and at that point, you must control the menial and tedious tasks as well to make sure the business as a whole is shaping up as you envisioned.

my two cents, I still like Tim!

lol ya this is very true. The Income Automation II chapter is funny in that sense because he basically outlines the product creation process like so:

        1) Find product
        2) Build site & launch adwords campaign
        3) ???????????
        4) PROFIT!

In fairness, he does give some thresholds on when to invest or divest, but there is a lot of grinding involved, more so even. Instead of just worrying about front end cash, now you need to optimize backend conversions as well (if doing that).

Here, I am contacting you here.

In my personal opinion, your best bet is to continue reading this subforum and then just start hitting away with trial and error. Start with free methods to learn and continuallyu look to educate yourself.

Most successful people I know in CPA started with nothing and learned everything on their own. Its always good to imitate what the successful people did.

Of course there are some good WSOs and products out there that can help expedite learning, but everything can easily be learned for free with the right digging and searching!!!!

I was putting in about 15 hours per day up until a year and a half ago, I realised, although I had known this prior to it, that the key was to delegate, outsource by any other name, and take my foot off so I could see and concentrate on bigger picture stuff.

These days, about 5 hours, very set pattern of days. Its that hoary old cliche about IM being a high paying job but not a lifestyle. No point in making money, imo, if you are stuck to your laptop all day long.

I just keep it simple nowadays. See what works, scale it, then outsource every scrap of it

Completely agree. But, its also possible to bring your "work" with you to enjoyable places.

As I write this sentence, I am at the shore, looking over the bay, soaking up the sun and drinking some fresh squeezed!!!

Everybody has their own shcedule. I personally like to work my butt off in the winter and take a good amount of the summer "off". Yes, this means sometimes I can't build out some of the campaigns I would like to and it means I still need to check in often to make sure everything is checking out online, and some days I still need to put in ridiculous hours.

But, what is life or money without actually taking TIME to enjoy.

I can't remember where I studied bout this but research shows that taking time OFF your tasks, works, etc is as important as you are taking your time doing it.

I found out that I can't really concentrate or keep my brain juice flowing after intensive working our without any off-time.

So yea, like Ken and other said, it's good to get things outsource and reduce your time spent on the tasks, but getting more and more ideas out on new projects or improving the current ones. We don't have to do all of those stuff on our own

For me it really depends what projects I am working on. If I'm in the middle of launching something new - I'll work a lot more.

As I get everything moving with the new project my hours dwindle a little bit - but then I always find another new project to keep me busy.

    Right now I'd say I average 12 hours a day, 5 days a week.

On the two days that I take "off" I put in around 4 hours of work in the morning.

At the moment it's about 5 hours work a day however I try to only focus on the stuff which is going to make me money working on new projects. HOWEVER I also spend probably another 2-3 hours on stuff which is more research development and trying out other stuff to see if it works.

In my first steps in the IM world, I use to work more then 8 hours per day in front of my computer. This is crazy! I am no longer doing that anymore, no time to live... Even for big $$$$ I will not, because the initial reason that led me to do the IM is to have more free time to do what I like and not be chained to a computer. No way!

maximum number of hours is not what affiliate marketing expected from every affiliates...!

Even if you spent daily 40 Minutes to setup one good profitable campaign, that will enough.

    1 month = 30 profitable campaign

even if your 20 campaign will succeed, then you can expect some good ROI monthly.

Conclusion = Quality is more important than quantity..!

At the moment all I do is just monitor project developments. 1-2 hours/day of actual work.

Will ramp this up to 12 hours/day once we launched.

I lived in Costa Rica Chad it's awesome! I spend about 7 hours and do research at the sametime. My goal is to buy some condo's in costa rica or property rent it out as summer vacation homes and live off the income I generate from the rentals. Automated money if you will. All together do even LESS work online... I have a couple of buddies out there that live pretty damn good just renting out property out there.
