Work Better, Work Less - Learn How To Manage Your Time

Hey Warriors!

A few days ago, I was reading a thread on this forum. The OP asked people how many hours a day they used to dedicate to affiliate marketing. I have to admit that I was surprised by the responses. Some guys said that they were working 12, 15 even 18 hours a day! To be honest, I don't even know how it's possible, so that was a big (and sad) surprise for me. Here is the thread that I'm talking about:

http://www.warriorforum.com/ad-netwo...any-hours.html

When I first started with internet marketing I had 2 main goals: money and freedom. I wanted to be able to make whatever I wanted (money) whenever I wanted (time). However, when I actually started making money online (several months later) I simply forgot them and became a slave of my work. I spent a few months of my life working many, many hours a day, everyday, from Monday to Sunday. Then, one day I realized that my life was even worse than before! There was a time when I had no money in my bank account, but I had time to spend with my friends and family and that was worth millions. After that day, I organized my tasks and tried to make my time as productive as possible so that I could work only 6 - 8 hours a day without damaging my business.

Now, I want to share with you a simple spreadsheet that I use to organize my tasks and make my time as productive as humanly possible. It's very simple (I'm not very good with Excel ), but I'm sure that it will help you save a few important hours a day and keep making money without spending all your time in front of your computer. Don't forget that life is happening outside your office while you are reading it! So use this spreadsheet to optimize your efforts and give some free time to yourself.

Here is the link for you to download the spreadsheet:

Please, let me know your thoughts!

So true and very well put, regarding the present IM CPA life design of a affiliate marketer, overcoming the breaking point. The whole day yes, because the conversion output is so needed as nothing of the kind now.

Well, walk around the block is included, but still wild focusing remains and without any significant reward doesn't seem to be replaced by surfing and aka Tim Ferris chilling.

    Thanks!

    So true.

For me, I worked like a madman when I first started...like sometimes gave up meals and sleep to pursue my online dreams. I do not regret this at all because when you are new, there is so much to learn and so much to try and practice. Its very difficult to WORK SMARTER when you are new because you dont even know enough to even begin thinking about how to work smarter. Organizing your time and using it efficiently is still very important, even from day one.

But yes, the reason I and most people pursue online marketing and CPA is for freedom and flexibility. Therefore, as you get more and more successful, it becomes even more important to focus your efforts on doing smarter things, so you can enjoy the pleasures of life. Too many people just work long hours because they think that working long hours in itself will bring success. That is completely not true and 100% false. I would bet on a man who works SMART for 2 hours a day then a man who doesnt work smart but puts in 8 hours a day.

The advantage for many online endeavors (less so CPA) is that you can hire people to take over many of the daily responsibilities you have, so you can focus your efforts on profit centers and revenue production activities. If you notice, once many people get successful, they work less and keep making more money. This is because they really internalized the message of this thread...work smarter and you can work less and still grow your business and income.

This year I have personally spent much more time traveling and freeing myself from the grips of business (in terms of hours), yet I have surpassed last years net income well before the first half of this year.

It IS possible to work smarter, work less, and make more money.

Thanks for this brilliant thread William and may you and everybody else continue to start new businesses, grow old ones, and become more successful and prosperous in your personal and professional endeavors!

One way I was able to increase my productivity fairly well was to focus more on what will make me money. Sounds simple doesn't it?

Through-out the day I'm sure many of us use sites like twitter, facebook, forums, etc. Sometimes it's related to making money, sometimes it's for pleasure. I start to make sure when I was working that I only used all of this for working and cut out any personal browsing, personal forum viewing, etc. Made sure it was all about business.

Think to yourself when looking at something - "is this helping me make money", if the answer isn't "yes", drop it and focus on something that will help you make money.

      Good advice!

It's very easy to get distracted on the internet, mainly if you are working at home. So having self-control and keeping focused on your tasks can improve productivity drastically. Facebook, Twitter, instant messengers, etc are great not only to keep in touch with friends, but also to talk about business and find new opportunities. However, stay away from them when you are working or you may end up spending more time on them than on your business.

When using my spreadsheet, schedule your tasks for the next 2 or 3 days and try to accomplish all of them. Sometimes it won't be possible, but do your best to accomplish all the tasks before you start having some fun online.

        Good stuff William.

I'm a huge fan of whiteboards and if you took a look at my office, this would be apparent instantly!!

What I like to do is set up ACTION LISTS for things I need to do on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. My smallest whiteboard I hit first each and every morning I wake up. When I wake up, I generally check to make sure I dont have any extremely urgent business matters to tackle. I then jot down everything I NEED to get done that day. This is my ACTION LIST for the day. I then start hitting each action until they are all done. When I finish, I can then move on to other things such as email, additional campaigns, and anything else I need to do, but not a day can go by that I dont finish each and every ACTION I created for that day.

Its amazing how effective this works (for my anyway). This is extremely effective for not letting yourself put things off.

        Again, great resource here William!

It's so true. What I found my major downfall was browsing an affiliate marketing forum (wont name it) and I'd always search for tidbits of info because once and a while you'd find it, then I found I got drown into the off-topic and stuff like that. I fooled myself and told myself that it's ok, its an affiliate marketing forum. Once I learned to cut that crap out my productivity got much better

A good experiment one can do is to literally have a stopwatch and in one full day of "working" turn it off when you are doing something productive in terms of implementing something. Dont count browsing Warrior Forum, dont count when you are checking personal emails, dont count when you are looking at CPA network commissions to see how much you made.

Just count "ACTIONS" that are directly aimed at earning money. Yes, educating oneself is important, but I think people will be surpised how little they are actually working on things that are profit producing.

Remember, the action takers make the big money. How many hours (or minutes) of action do you take in a week?

I agree. It's incredible the amount of time we spend on forums, blogs, social networks, etc...

Of course, it's possible to learn a lot on this forum. However, learning is not enough. As Kenster said, the action takers make the big money.

The first thing I do when I turn on my computer is to read my emails. I reply to the ones that require a response and then start working on my business. I always prepare a list with the things I must do in the previous day so I just need to start working. I don't stop working until I finish everything I need to do. Eventually, I give myself a break and then come to the Warrior Forum or play some video game, but it hardly happens before I finish all my tasks, only if I feel that it's really necessary.

When I finish everything I come to this forum, read some blogs, watch a movie, etc... But only when the work is done. Since I have been working 5 or 6 hours a day, I still have a lot of free time after finishing my tasks.

I still get stuck in that rut of overworking and wasting time when I could be making money. It can be tough to find the nice medium
I have already tried this technique. However, creating simple to-do lists can be not enough. As you said, often times they get too long and instead of helping us just drive us crazy. However, with the Excel sheet you can organize your projects individually and then define the tasks that you want to accomlish along the day. It's easier to follow and will certainly produce better results for you.

Just got my first whiteboard last night and its already full. I have it split up by Daily To Do's, To Do's and Must Do's. That way I'll always have something productive to work on.

Also, I find putting a notepad by your bed at night will help you sleep better so when you get those big ideas and you're lying in bed you can just jot them down and forget about it.

Yo, that's amazing. I'm telling you, my friends think I'm crazy when they walk into my office. I have whiteboards all over the place, some dedicated to a specific project I'm working on, some general business strategy boards, some action lists, some random.

It works so they can laugh all they want.

At the end of the day, I'm the one that gets the last laugh!! hehe

Whiteboards are a great idea, too. I myself use only the Excel sheet, it's enough for me to organize my projects and tasks. However, whiteboards can be good because it's possible to use them not only for tasks, but also for ideas. As Sean said, sometimes we have great ideas while doing other things (e.g. watching tv, reading a book, etc) and even when working on another project, so it's good to have a notepad to take notes and then a whiteboard to organize those ideas.

          William

          Yep William,

The reason I use whiteboards is because I literally take it anywhere to brainstorm. I can bring a small whiteboard up a hiking mountain and do some brainstorming at the peak, I can brainstorm on a boat, or outside, or on the beach.

I literally do a lot of my brainstomring and creative thinking in the weirdest of places. It helps to escape the confines of my office to really loosen up any constraints I have, whcih is very important when creative thinking.

I think the point here is that everybody has their own style of organizing and planning their way to success. William has a method that works for him and for many people this will help trmendously. Other people like myself may do things slightly different. Other people might do things completely different.

If you can find your own personal groove...thats all you need.

Yes, I think that it's not the same for everybody. However, when I created this thread my main purpose was not to tell people how to organize their tasks, but tell them that they need to organize their tasks. Whiteboards, notepads, spreadsheets, etc... They all work and people have to decide which one is the best for them. The problem is that many people work on their tasks "randomly". They start doing something, stop it, move on to another thing, then get distracted and start another task... It kills producitvity.

Very nice Chad. Whatever works best for YOU is what YOU should do. Voice recorders, spreadsheets like the one Will graciously provided, whiteboards, chalkboards, pad and paper, writing on your arm, whatever!

      Hey buddy!

Do you have a plan written down?
Do you have action lists that you make daily, weekly, monthly?

I would stop buying products and take a look at the ones you have purchased. My bet is that between them, you can come up with a nice strategy to start earning money. Then its time to roll your sleeves up and get dirty implementing that strategy. You will fail a lot, but that just means you will learn a lot. As you learn, you will get closer to turning profit. Keep plugging away and once you turn profit, then the fun begins.

Then figure out how to repeat or scale the heck out of your idea.

Your strategy and plan will likely change course bit by bit as you learn and implement. That is okay, but make sure you arent 'jumping around'.

It's all about choosing a system, creating an action plan and putting your focus on it.

If you have bought many WSOs, so I'm sure that you already have all the information that you need. Now, the next step is to choose a system. You can use one that's explained in one of your WSOs or combine different ideas to come up with something original. When choosing your methods and traffic sources, consider your current situation. If you have money, choose something paid in order to get faster results. If you don't have money, choose something free and invest time to save money.

After deciding what system you are going to use, it's time to choose verticals and offers. Browse offers on CPA networks and OfferVault.com, talk to your affiliate managers, read threads on this forum and see what others are promoting, etc... Make some research and choose 4 or 5 offers that you would like to test.

When you have your offers, create an action plan. You can use my spreadsheet or anything that you feel comfortable working with. The only important thing is that you write an action plan with all the tasks that you are supposed to do. You can change this plan as you test your offers, but make sure that you always have a plan to follow.

Finally, take action! Every night organize the tasks you must accomplish in the next day and start implementing your plan. Maybe you won't see results in the first days, or even in the first weeks depending on your system, but you will see results.

Keeping focused and organized is the only secret I know to succeed online.

I like that task list - keeps it simple and workable. It's similar to what I do on paper - but think I'll try the list so I put it on my desktop.

I also use white boards though I don't take them anywhere - they are mounted on my office walls. I use them to track weekly and monthly projects and have one where I track income and another next to it with goals for coming months.

Want to stay motivated? - keep your earnings right where you will see them!

        Hey William,

        This is an excellent thread.

Now, take it to the next level.

        Do this:

        1. Start logging your time. Record how much time you spend doing an activity (use a small pocket notebook and then input into a spreadsheet once daily). You will be shocked at where you spend your time and how much time you really have available.

        2. Significantly change your life.
Write down (in detail) what your ideal life would be. This is beyond the task list - you must visualize it. Start at the beginning of a typical day. Where are you? Do you see yourself waking up on an exotic islan with the breeze blowing and with a great ocean view? Write it down. Do you see your significant other(s) there with you? Write it down. Do you see yourself walking into the next room of your straw hut and checking your financial accounts? Write it down. Do you see yourself working for a couple hours and then enjoying activities with your significant others? Write it down. Whatever it is that you want your life to be, Write it down. This will produce several pages of what I call "My Life". Hint - it is your target.

        3. Daily task list. Make item two above the first thing on your daily task list. i.e. read your "My Life" document. Knowing your target will focus you and it makes your decisions clearer and easier. The second item on your task list is to review the previous days time log. Where did you spend time that you shouldn't have and how can you improve on it? Next step is to tweak the currents day task list and take action.

        Regards,

        John

ps - I went through the paradigm shift you described about 4 years ago when I realized that I started internet marketing so I could do what I wanted and when I wanted. After 2 years of working my butt off and making a ton of money I realized that all I was doing was working my butt off and making a ton of money. It was not fun and I was not doing the things I wanted like spending quality time with my family and friends, not traveling to the places I wanted, and certainly not enjoying the hours I was putting in. I had no life. So I changed and i hope the above paragraphs help you get there too!

I try to take a break when it´s possible and go out with my friends or make a barbecue in the garden!

Sometimes we (me and my friends) are leaving for a trip to Spain or somewhere else and we can work there with out laptops... :-))

It is very important to have a break...

A fresh mind is a creative mind and a creative mind is a profitable mind.

Taking breaks and relaxing helps stimulate a fresh mind.

I'm hip to the "take breaks" plan. Balance is key to a quality lifestyle.

For example, my wife and I started making Friday evenings "date night" about 7-8 years ago. No kids, just me and her out for the evening dinner, shopping, sight see-ing, etc...

I did get consumed with Internet marketing several years ago and have fixed that conundrum a couple times. That's how I know the pitfalls and offered the advice above.

You may have also noticed that lately, I am on WF very infrequently. It can be a distraction if not managed.

I am focused on family, home and two web adventures at this time.

      Life is good!

This balance is very important and something I am still working on. Luckily I am still at the point where starting ventures and growing my business is still a heck of a lot of fun. There is work with a capital "W" involved, but a lot of the work with a lower case "w" involved in what I do now is fun.

Life is good John, I agree. The Life Is Good philosphy is one we can all endorse and we all should endorse. No matter what income, color, age, shape, size, we are, the Life is Good perspective can be had!

Definitely - I get a lot more work done if I make sure that I'm taking a break every hour.

Just a 5 minute break per hour - get up off the computer and stretch out and let your mind wander.

Come back to the computer and you're really refreshed and ready to go again.

I've heard that 10% of your work equates to 90% of your productivity. I spend a bunch of time optimizing use of my time to be the most effective... it's an ongoing process!

I dont know, I heard 12% of your work equates to 94% of your productivity

Either way, the point is the same...optimize your time. Spending 15% of your time figuring out how to optimize the other 85% is well worth it.

      Eeeek :p
