Quick Question on Adwords...

I looked at the keyword tool to see the CPC of a keyword. I created a LP and a campaign for a little zip submit. I setup my campaign and placed my bids 50% higher than the CPC listed in the keyword tool.

After that, google says my bids are too low. The average bid for 1st page position for the keywords is $1 more than what the keyword tool shows. Additionally, there are only two other ads showing for the keywords.

Is this normal? I spent time on a LP, but the bid I have to bid is about the same as payout of the zip. I wasted a lot of time for nothing. My ads arent showing because they are below first page bids.

if only life was a bowl of roses, everything would smell sweet. I would not stress to much, call it a learning curve. With a bid / cpc the same as you payout thats a big call and i see you were given some other numbers in the keyword tool.

At best these are ever only going to be averages but have you just focused on one keyword ? you should have a jolly swag full of those puppies or at least a few more than a one for the money single playing on your adwords G player.

You may also want to quickly run over the advertising rules as you really also need to be kipping out for a land site not a land page / but that may be what you meant.

You product needs to meet terms as well so make sure you tick that box of before making up a new site.

I would not be to down at your first crack at things and if the land site / product is fine, then try adding a few more keys and see if you can unlock the door to happiness.

  • ^^^ WTF?

I wasnt asking about landing pages. But, I have never heard a landing page called a landing site. That is a new one to me.

Anyway, why is the actual bid so much higher than the bid given in the Adwords keyword tool?

? you mentioned you spent time on a LP, sorry i probably did not say things clear, but on that, a page only per say will not cut it, and you may need a land site, as for the difference i am not sure that the keyword tool can take in factors such as your quality score and other factors you have in play and as such this may alter the price.

A single land page may cause a low q score and as such raise your bid price.

You're bidding against 2 other people - this is basically an auction but the highest bid doesn't win - it's more complicated than that.

The best written ad (which draws people in to click) and the most relevant site is what will get the lowest bid but you have to bid high to start getting click throughs (because click throughs & keyword relevance and google adwords guideline compliance is what this is all about).

I'll give you an example - I was bidding on the keyword for a popular Clickbank product (The Fat Burning Furnance) - it was going to my own landing page (heavily keyword relevant & optimized just right) for lead capture.

The keyword tool says ".05" a bid for the variations of the keyword I'm looking at - but that's just a pipe dream.

I started off at $.80 (maybe even a $1.15 - I can't remember) a bid and as my click through increased and quality score jumped I eventually got the bids down to somewhere between $.30-$.60.

But again - the keyword tool always said .05.

When my quality score increased to above 8 - I started ranking at the very top of the ad sections (ad highlighted in yellow) - and my cost fell.

Google has a really cool way of doing all this but it's not intuitive or easy to figure out (as you can tell by my now rambling post!).

ps, you can hate Google for being so difficult but I have yet to find a system as profitable as AdWords :-)

the adwords cpc estimates are usually wildly inaccurate...i'm not really sure where they get the data from cause it's almost always wrong.

also -- i'm of the opinion that zip submits and adwords don't really mix...usually adwords is too expensive/competitive for the CPA.

focus on increasing your ad's clickthrough rate (and in turn, quality score) and eventually you'll be able to get lower, more reasonable bids.
