Netflix + College = Money

Hey Everybody!

Just figured I would drop by and let the strugglers out there know of a way to make some dough in the next few weeks....and beyond I suppose.

In the US, kids will be going back to college these next few weeks. What do we know about college kids? They are generally broke and love free stuff. Guess what...many CPA offers offer free stuff.

Like a largemouth bass and shiny lure, college kids will devour the right free offer if put in front of them.

A while back when I was just starting, one of my first successful offline campaigns (and campaigns in general) was promoting the Netflix free trial via flyers on college campuses. Most colleges have a million boards to post flyers, so I just created flyers that said..."Welcome Back [enter school name here] Students. We are giving out 100 free Netflix Trials to [entre school name] students so check it out www.mysite.com immediately to claim your free trial"

College kids love free things, they love movies, it was a no brainer and I made some nice cash for a few weeks in a row.

Just something to think about. You can also do other offers but remember to find an offer with no cost to consumer because most of these students are broke!

Something to try if you want. Be creative, have fun doing it, and hopefully make a few bucks along the way.

What are CPA networks that have Netflix offers? And what do I need to ask my affiliate manager about this kind of offline promotion? Are they strict about this type of promotion?

Very nice method, Kenster! Since I'm from Brazil I don't have many offline opportunities, but I think that it could work in the US.

Check offervault. There are other alternatives if you are from other countries. For example, Lovefilm is at $22.50 street payout at neverblue I believe. UK and Germany etc!

They are probably more strict now than when I did it, but I didnt have any problems at all. Leads were good and I have no doubt lead quality was great. When I was in college, Netflix was huge among students so I have no doubt it converted on the backend.

To be safe you can run by your AM!

True that Will. I promoted other things on campuses as well, so not sure what the university situation is like in Brazil, but if they are as big and hungry as here in the States, then other free trial type offers would work I would imagine!

By the way, I'm trying to do some traveling in South America sometime soon (its one of the continents I havent been to much) so maybe we can do a quick mastemind session if I make it to Brazil which I'm sure I will...heard the women are oolala's

The problem here is that it's hard to find offers with decent payouts. Using the exmaple of Netflix, there is a similar company here, but they have 2 problems: 1) They work only with the biggest cities (I hate big cities, so I live in a small one ); 2) Their payouts are very low, below $5!

However, I like the idea of the meastermind. Imagine if you could get back on time and bid only $0.50 for very competitive keywords on Google, get clicks for pennines on social networks (the most famous one here is Orkut), get a 1st page on Google for keywords with 5K+ searches a month with minimum effort, use article directories while most marketers haven't figured out their potential, etc...

Marketing in the US is like fighting Mike Tyson, marketing in Brazil is like fighting a little girl. However, there are just few offers here, the payouts are lower and people spend much less money on infoproducts. But I think that the situation is changing and in 1 year or so Brazil will be a goldmine. When this day comes I'll be ready to take my piece of the pie.

And the great thing about the internet is that there are always these pockets of untapped opportunity. The internet is massive...really massive, but its still growing. Its still touching more and more towns and homes in the smallest corners of the globe. So there will always be pockets of gold. We as marketers just need to be resilient enough to take advantage of them!

The other cool thing is that I can become a dominant marketer in Brazil for example. Just because I am from the US means nothing. I can target Brazilian sites and web spaces and geo target Brazil from my office here in the States no problem. The internet crosses all borders. So these pockets of opportunities can be exploited by you, or me, or anybody!

          To everybodys success and prosperity!

Check out offervault to see which company has the offer.

Keep in mind that going through Netflix directly has gotten much tougher. Its the reason I dont promote my Netflix WSO anymore. Its still very valid and very workable, but getting access to the offer has become more difficult.

What we can all hope for is the blockbuster or a similar online DVD rental company comes out with a massive online CPA lead generation campaign. Right now, at least for US traffic, Netflix has got control. Payouts have gone down and acceptance to the offer has got more difficult.

I can vouch for this. Each time we have gotten a new version of Netflix in recent memory the requirements have gotten stricter and the payout has slowly decreased, but it still does convert and there are still plenty of people making money.

Yep, I mean its the same offer as always, they can just get away with lower payer and stricter acceptance policies.

Its a great solid offer though, with no cost to consumer, something that hits virtually every demographic, and its a branded recognizable name.

As per the above comment, yes a lot of college students download and pirate movies and songs, but just as many are willing to throw down 9 bucks to stream high quality movies or get them sent through the mail. Its really a terrific service and thus a great offer.

    Ken,

    Here's my plan.

    1) Apply to Netflix via GAN.
    2) Ask Netflix affiliate is offline promotion is fine.
    3) If they accept, do I use another domain to cloak my affiliate link? Or, can I promote bit.ly offline?
    4) Pay for this kind of gig

I was actually gonna try the Debt management Offline route but then forgot about it. I get like $200 for a simple form submit (no credit card) and I was gonna hand out flyers at the unemployment/welfare office for "In Debt? We can Write it Off for FREE!" ;- )

Maybe I should head over to vistaprint and get it sorted just now lol

Yep, offline works but the honest truth is that most people are too lazy to even give it a shot. I agree, its a lot of work, but when you are first starting out, its a great option because its very non-technical.

Netflix works great and colleges are a great place to post, but there are a million other opportunties and strategies as this thread has illustrated. Debt, health, high paying or mid paying offers, the potential is endless.

    Best of luck all!

I mean mostly I was doing on weekends and some weekends did very well yes. How many flyers really depends on where I was promoting. Some apartment complexes and parking garages I could deliver 1500 or more flyers. I was also outsourcing a bit though. A weekends work often brought in over a grand!

Wow, the age old advertising methods still work!

I take a walk every morning before work before most the the neighborhood is up and our local Blockbuster closed a couple months ago. I've thought about printing up a bunch of flyers for Netflix and placing them in the slots for newspapers most people have on their mailboxes as I do my morning walk. I really have to give it a shot. My pitch might be something like "We are the reason Blockbuster fled!"

I would put the name of your town right on the flyer so it feels more exclusive. May also want to check with your AM since all leads will be coming from the same geographic area.

May be a good way to earn a few hundred though from your morning walk. If it works, then just come up with different walking routes haha!

Yep, exactly what I was going to do - put the name of my town on flyer and maybe use a sub domain like mytown.specialoffer.com

I made myself to start, then bought thousands from nextdayflyers.com

Never had problems with them at all. Their ticket stock was very thick and was cheap. I want to say I was paying like $100 per 5,000 flyers and I was promoting a $40 payout offer so 2.5 conversions would cover the cost.

I'm sure there are a million flyer companies though, do some research!

      Hope that helps!

In this thread, there have been a handful of "newbie" marketers that are interested in promoting this offer and asking which network they can get it through (IE: me). So I thought I would post my offervault.com results as a reference.

DeluxNetworks - They are promoting this at 17.50 per lead. The company has been around for a handful of months and its hard to find any substantial reviews. I decided to just look past this one as it seemed risky.

Axon Media Group - The company seemed to be pretty well established and had some very decent reviews. I joined this network and attempted marketing the product last night however, the affiliate links to the offer are broken. I attempted contacting the owner last night and haven't gotten a response. It isn't an indictment on the network, it just is what it is. They were offering at 14.00/lead.

Onteractive - Offering at 12.25/ lead. Can't find any feedback on this company. This is kind of a mystery, but thanks anyways.

Lead Cola - Offering at 11.20/lead. The research of this network produced reviews that were mediocre at best, with a lot of bad customer service complaints. If you've had good experiences with them, then godspeed to you, but I'd rather not risk it.

PointClickTrack - Offering at 10.00. Seems like a pretty decent small network. The reviews were mostly positive but some negative. Also, a very small payout rate to boot.

Was kind of bummed out after all of this, but I talked to Phil at CPATrend this afternoon and asked about the offer. I guess he went out and found it because he texted me this evening and said it would be available by the end of today. Awesome! Not sure what the payout rate will be but I'm sure it will be in the scope above. Phil is an established poster on this website and seemingly runs a tight ship of a CPA network, so I'm going to go with this one based on the trust factor.

So if you're a newbie with ambitions of promoting this, there's your options.

I want to get into this heavy but two things stop me.

#1. Outsourcing to a different city takes a certain amount of risk because they could just take your money, and I see no companies that look reputable in this space.

#2. I live in a small town and there isn't enough ROI for me to walk around and do this.

I've been thinking about actually outsourcing this like the old magazine companies used to back in the day. That would involve hiring a "road manager" and leasing a van, then hiring some HS kids and have them drive around the state doing this, paying them per day or per task.

You could cover A LOT of ground that way it just comes down to the risk and ROI. I'd hate to go through all this and break even. It's still on my back burner and I'm throwing the idea out there for anyone who wants to jump on it before I get to it.

I think we need to start a thread on offline CPA. I love talking about this. I think a ton of us got our starts in door to door sales as kids selling candy and magazines.

That's a good point. Certain big colleges require certain approval to post bulletin or past out flyers on campus.

Some of the universities near my area require a permit of some sort if you plan to do some commercial activity on campus, if you're not a student. I mean, you can't just drive to a campus and pass out flyers hoping to make a few bucks and get caught.

The thing that's bothering me about offline CPA is, CPA networks might be suspicious of leads coming from one central location.

Thanks for the rest of your info.

As for all the leads coming from one geographical area, you merely run it by your affiliate manager and tell them it will happen as you're doing offline marketing and if they're ok with that. If they say ok, you're good to go. If not, no go.

Hey excoder01, just want to say a brief something in response to your statement there.

CPA Networks are run by real people! All you have to do is talk to your AM before promoting so that they're prepared for the traffic you'll be driving in. Advertisers, for the most part, do not mind offline marketing, as long as its bringing in legitimate leads/sales! If they have to ship a million items to one central location, but they're getting paid for it, I assure you they wont be complaining.

        Hope this helps .

As far as posting fliers on mailboxes go.....

          Be wary...

I owned a Window Cleaning Company and the largest source of advertising I did was proactive marketing... aka... in your face... flyer in the door marketing....

The newspaper bin.... if there is one, is not illegal. The outside of the mail box is open to interpretation. If the postal guy catches you... he will tell you to stop. Postman specific... sometimes they will remove the flier from the side of the mailbox.

I bought a scooter (150cc) and would ride down the street taping them to mailboxes. Way more cost effective than direct mail and gives you that 1 second of immediate undivided attention. Because you only have so long... Make sure you have a strong Tag Line (Title) and keep in mind what the reader is thinking....

          WIIFM

          What's In It For Me....

Follow up with a quick feature and benifit while demanding a call to action and you cannot lose.

          Just my experience.

I wish you the best of luck... I don't post here very often (at all...) But have been lurking and soaking it all in for years.....

I imagine every campus is different. Still waiting on a network that has netflix so haven't tried this yet but I will!

To be perfectly honest, I never got permission. It probably depends on the campus and where you are posting. The colleges near me have public boards so it wasnt a big deal, but I was posting in many other places that I'm sure they werent pleased about as well, but I never had an issue.

Of course my advice is a "do as I say, not as I do". Its probably best to check and get permission! Just like its probably best you run yoru campaign by your AM!

    Hi Kenster
We have a company in the UK called Lovefilm which seems to do a similar thing to Netflix. But the trial offer is for 14days and then they have to pay a monthly sub fee this is being offered with the Neverblue network. Do you have any more information how you put this into practise. I live in Manchester and we have a massive amount of students. Would love to hear back to see if this company is compatible with how you were doing it.

I have a brother who's in college and I have him putting up flyers right now, we'll see how it goes. If it goes good, I'm gonna have my cousin start on it as well. Wish I was in the CPA game when I was in college would have had a lot more success than I did with MLM, ha ha!

I'm also gonna get some postcards made and place them in all of the mailboxes in my apartment complexes, (each box has a small opening at the bottom, just enough space to slide in a postcard) which is hundreds of apartments. I'm also gonna hit up some more complexes in the area and put them in there as well.

I'm approved with Netflix through the Google Affiliate network, I don't see a way to contact an AM I will keep looking but in the TOS I didn't see anything against offline marketing.

Yes, you cannot put anything inside a mailbox without proper pastage. Inside your mailbox is also considered federal property, so it can be a big deal if you abuse the law.

I have received many flyers from local businesses on and in my mailbox illegally, so not everbody gets caught and many times the advertiser will just get a phone call and told to stop as a warning if they do get caught. If they then decide to keep promoting illegally, then the feds aint happy.

So, use your noggin. Put flyers in the cracks of doors, under doormats, car windshields, betwen the screen door and the home door. I think you can legally put advertisements in newspaper slots but I would look into it because im not certain

Be creative and stay within the law. Aint worth the trouble or worry associated with promoting something illegally.

Give your AM a call, have a plan already established and let your aff manager know that plan. When things get tight, you need to go one step beyond what others are doing.

As my mom always said...to be successful in life you only need to do two things

    1. always remember who you are
    2. work harder than everybody else

The second point comes in here. If you work harder and go the extra mile, you are much more likely to get accepted to this and other offers. Networks dont want dopes running this offer, so make sure you have a plan!

There are probably lots of creative ways he can get a lot of sign ups at the campus, which is a great place for the Netflix offer.

      -pass out flyers
-any group work, convince all group members to fill it out to help you out (bam, $100)
-teams, clubs, organization he belongs to he can promote to
-buy your friends a beer to fill it out (if incentivizing)

    Thanks for the tips guys.

So far I've applied to 17 networks and been denied by Affiliate.com and Monetizeit.

I am still waiting to hear from some of the others. Perhaps I'll make some phone calls.

I hope I get approved by one of these networks soon so I can start taking action!

Yes, you should certainly try reaching out to the networks either by finding any AMs around this forum or by calling if you have a number!!!

I just got denied by Google affiliate and I get at least 30k visitors per month and I mainly focus on movie/tv subjects. It seems like there's really no pattern why you get denied. There's no contact info so I don't even know the reason.

Going to try out other affiliates.

    Questions for Kenster

    1) Do people sign up more when you have a sub domain just for the offer ie cityname.domain.com instead of just your domain? What's the reason for that?

    2) On the flyer do you put something like "FREE - No catch!" so people are more willing to sign up.

If I do get approved, I'm going to put a counter on my page form saying something like "There's only x amount of free Netflix offer left...hurry before they're all gone."

    Thanks.

    Thanks!

Netflix is making it very hard for anyone who doesn't already have a website with huge traffic and an established track record with the networks to even advertise their offer. So it seems this thread is now irrelevant for newbies, at least with the Netflix offer.

Somebody I am sort of helping get into CPA is 100% newbie (1 week experience) and who doesnt have a site just got accepted through one of the CPA networks (not sure which one though). I was a bit surprised myself actually because I know the networks were a bit picky as well!

A web site with a lot of traffic will obviously help though but I get pms all the time from people who got accepted to Netflix without a lot of experience.

Actually the website I applied with gets next to nothing in traffic because it was new but I was able to get into the Netflix offer through CPA network Point Click Track.

But at that network the Netflix offer only pays $12 as opposed to the $16 I've seen elsewhere

My point is that it was easy to get accepted through Point Click Track so sometimes I think it depends on the network itself.

Thanks, Brittlesnc. Dandingo also has the offer, and it looks like they may not be as stringent as Peerfly. I applied there days ago, but have heard nothing from them. Guess I'll have to give them a ring!

        That's interesting.

But you can still get them on cpa networks. Payouts have really gone down from a year ago but you can still promote it as long as you can get in to the those cpa networks that still have it.

        Check offervault.

Myself I have a new netflix campaign in the mix right now, based on the first post of this thread. Let's see how it goes!

Not sure if that is for the particular network or an overall freeze in applications. I know they have a strong CPA strategy so I would be surprised if it was a freeze.

My bet is they are just more picky because they can be (no blockbuster) and because many have abused the offer.

As always, my bet is that if you are a big publisher and can do volume you can work around anything....money talks!

It does not say anywhere in this TOS that offline is forbidden. You just can't advertise Netflix directly in your flyers. All you have to do is get a generic, easy-to-remember URL and redirect it to your affiliate link. And try to make your flyers look less like an advertisement, and more like an announcement where you are pointing the reader to more information.

I mean it all depends on the affiliate manager. A redirect probably won't fly. Can possibly get away with a splash page of some sort or a very simple landing page with just a little content and Netflix banner as the highlight. Again, all dependent on what your affiliate manager clears but normally redirects are straight splashes dont fly

Hmmm, I just spoke to my AM yesterday about running this offline, and he didn't say anything about redirects being off limits. I don't see what would be wrong with that as long as the URL is not masked. But I am fairly new to this game, so I could be wrong.

Yeah the only reason some AMs have a problem is because if you are simply doing a redirect then its nto true Web traffic. Offline traffic through a redirect or 100% frame to an affiliate link is offline traffic since the visitor never stops anywhere in between going offline and the offer.

A splash page or little content lander is more on the side of web but some AMs have a bit of problem with this as well.

Really depends and most important is that the advertiser is happy and getting good leads

Neverblue has Netflix as private offer, so you won't find it in the list of offers.
Who knows, maybe with other networks you find the good aff manager, who will accept offline traffic method. But they do whatever to satisfy the advertiser and not to spoil their reputation. Correct? And with neverblue you are not eligible to drive any type of traffic apart from web seo serach stuff:

Neverblue Additional Affiliate Terms and Conditions (Netflix Addendum #1, hereinafter, the “Addendum”).
By accepting the terms of this Addendum and continuing to promote the Campaign Offer, you hereby agree to the following:
    1) You agree that you will not use any tactic to manipulate or change the price we set for the Campaign Offer. The Campaign Offer is a standalone offer and cannot be marketed, bundled, grouped, or sold with any other third party offer.
    2) You shall only use advertising content and creative provided by Neverblue in promoting the Campaign Offer, without change or modification. Neverblue may update the creative or advertising materials for the Campaign Offer at anytime, and once communicated to you, all creative or advertising materials that you are currently displaying must be updated as soon as possible but in no event later than three (3) business days following the availability of the updated materials.
    3) You may not promote the Campaign Offer by purchasing, either directly or indirectly from websites, search engines or other directory referral services, the search names or keywords "Netflix", other Netflix trademarks, or “flix” -whether alone or in combination with any other term or phrase, or any misspelling or variant thereof.
    4) Your site shall not copy or resemble the look and feel of any Netflix Site, nor shall you create the impression that your site is the Netflix Site or a part of the Netflix Site. You shall not use Netflix, any other trademark of Netflix or “flix”, or any variation or misspellings thereof in: (i) any domain name or metatag or (ii) in any username, group name, or other identifier on any social networking website. You shall not frame or permit the framing of any page of any Netflix Site.
    5) You may not promote the Campaign Offer in email or newsletters unless you receive written permission from Neverblue and enter into specific additional terms governing such transactions as required by Neverblue. Permission must be received for each email or newsletter campaign. Approval to include Netflix offer in one email or newsletter campaign does not constitute approval to include the Netflix offer in any other campaign, and cannot be transferred to an otherwise approved sub-affiliate or agent without specific permission from Netflix to do so.
    6) You shall not offer, either directly or indirectly, any consideration or incentives to potential subscribers to register for the Campaign Offer without first getting written permission from Neverblue which may be given or withheld in our sole and absolute discretion and once given may be revoked at any time for any or no reason whatsoever.
    7) You shall not, in any way, use pop-over or pop-under advertising to promote the Campaign Offer.
    8) You shall not use spyware, cookie stuffing, PPV or any other technique that forces user clicks or embeds tracking links into Ref URLs other than the Link format approved by us. You are prohibited from installing cookies on user computers based on the view or click of a Campaign Offer Advertisement or placing a pixel in the Campaign Offer Advertisement, unless agreed to, in writing, by Neverblue.
    9) You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Neverblue and any officer, director, employee, parent company, subsidiary or affiliated company harmless from and against any and all claims, actions, proceedings, suits, losses, costs, expenses, or damages (collectively, the “Claims”) suffered or incurred by or arising from any breach by you of any of these Neverblue Additional Affiliate Terms and Conditions. Notwithstanding the foregoing, should you breach any terms of this Addendum, Neverblue shall be entitled to withhold all commissions generated by you, through the Neverblue network and payable to you, as liquidated damages in addition to any other equitable remedies available.
    10) No term or condition of this Addendum will be deemed amended or waived, and no breach excused, unless such amendment, waiver or consent excusing the breach is in writing and signed by Neverblue. The failure of Neverblue to enforce at any time any of the provisions of this Addendum, or the failure to require at any time performance by you of any of the provisions of this Addendum, shall in no way be construed to be a present or future waiver of such provisions, nor in any way affect the ability of Neverblue to enforce each and every such provision thereafter.
    11) All other terms of the Affiliate Agreement, Electronic Mail Policy, and Downloadable Software Policy shall remain in full force and effect.

OK, so I called my AM again, and he said there would be no problem with using a simple redirect to the sales page for offline purposes. All he asked is that I email him before I start the campaign, in case there is a spike in traffic to my aff link from multiple local IPs. Although this particular network has one of the lower payouts for Netflix. I wish the Dandingo folks would call me back; I applied with them Oct. 8. Oh well, I'll just use the current network until something comes up.

    Hi guys,

As you can see I am new to this forum. I got to know about this forum through an offer I bought online about Article/Blog submissions.
Although I am still looking at the Article submission info, IM appeals to me more and the revenues, if set up correctly, seem pretty amazing. The only downside is I'm a complete newbie to this field (I even had to check out what a CPA network was)!

Any terminology I don't understand then I am researching it furiously and absorbing as much info as I can.
The info that you guys post on this forum is fantastic, but could someone send me info on how IM works or direct me to the relevant info that a complete new starter needs - is there an ebook that one of you trusted people have written covering this subject.
All this talk of redirects, URLs that are masked, sub domains & splash pages is making my brain ache!
It would be much easier for me to teach myself from one source rather than reading conflicting info from various parts of the web.

I apologise if this has broken the thread a little but it seems that you guys are the experts who newbies like myself should be learning from.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Sorry once again but everybody has to start at the beginning.

    Kind regards,

    A very, very keen newcomer.

Thanks Kenster for your helpful reply.

It is difficult at first, in my case I am literally having to research and teach myself the workings of IM in any spare time I can find, but the determination and drive is there and hopefully I'll be turning out, in the near future, some of the figures that people have posted on here.

I'll be buying your Rags2Riches ebook, the reviews, from some of the more experienced marketers, are unbelievably good.

Am I right in thinking you provide your email address in the pack for people to contact you?

If not, could you send it to me, as I've got a funny feeling I'll be needing it!

At a tipping point now and will be looking over my strategic plan to determine how I want to play things out.

But the short answer is that yes, I can sure help you out and I try and get to every single email and pm I ever receive, but there are times when there may be a lag time. Luckily these forums are filled with tremendously smart Warriors....many of whom are much smarter than I am :p
