Fraudster caught within seconds (funny -- for me)

So here's the situation:

A very legitimate looking affiliate account signed up. High traffic website, whois information matched his application information, including name, phone number, and address, which doesn't happen too often. However, the address that the person signed up with did not match his IP address. So I figured I'd drop him a message on AIM before conducting a phone interview to just check out why the IP address and address listed on the application do not match. I wont include any names for privacy reasons, but the name on the application was certainly an American -- probably Irish-American -- name. So here is our AIM conversation:

(11:31:00 AM) CPATrendPhil: Hey <English name>, how are you?
(11:31:36 AM) fraudster: hi friend

(12:02:14 PM) CPATrendPhil: thanks for playing

If anybody has spoken with me personally, you know that I typically speak much more professionally on AIM, but sometimes you get some of these guys who are blatantly fraudulent and you just gotta have a bit of fun with them too.

My favorite part is how he called me out for "racial discrimination" and followed it with "I would like to build a healthy relationship with your company."

Some of you may be able to appreciate this!

      (11:36:32 AM) fraudster: Chinese students

I'm curious to find out more about the protective measure you put in place for your network...maybe we can connect and share some ideas that'll strengthen both networks.

    Thanks for the laugh

It's true that most networks reject the vast majority of applications from certain Asian countries, but what this guy did is not a good way to change it. He tries to cheat you and then tell you what he did without hesitation?

IMO guys like this just make things even harder for honest Chinese affiliates...

Just a thread? Should have it's own forum!

I did a blog post over a year ago where I went through our network pub accounts and pulled out some fun names people had used on their applications:

Gerald Ford - Our 38th President, although dead, apparently found some time to dabble in affiliate marketing.
Randy Jones - Former San Diego Padres Cy Young winner.
Willie Parker - Fast Willie Parker from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jerry Garcia - The Grateful Dead band member and inspiration for the delicious Cherry Garcia ice cream, which can be found at your local Ben & Jerry's.
David Robinson - "The Admiral". Former center for the San Antonio Spurs...not likely that the guy needs to dive into affiliate marketing to earn a few extra bucks.
Robert Duval - Must have gotten bored of being a famous actor and decided to run some email submits.
Phil Jackson - He's already won several NBA championships and really can't achieve much more in basketball, so looks like he wanted to dominate some biz-op campaigns as well.
Benjamin Franklin - He must have figured out how to get electricity in the afterlife.
Jimmy Carter - Yet another former US President (39th)
Lisa Simpson - I would have preferred Homer.
Phil Collins - He can feel pop ups coming in the air tonight...
Arizona River - Not really a famous person but rather a body of water looking to go with the flow of PPC marketing.
      James Bond - Bond...James Bond...
Chad Johnson - The infamous wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals...now legally referred to as Chad Ocho-Cinco.
Harold Kumar - On their search for White Castle, they stumbled upon FluxAds.
Barry Sanders - Former Detroit Lions great running back.
John Stamos - Looks like Uncle Jesse got tired of living with his brother-in-law and his three daughters and wanted to make some commission.

      You were mean.

I mean, the guy obviously had worked hard to develop a few good lines to impress you - and then you asked questions out of order. Amazing how popular the "racial discrimination" card is, isn't it? Looks like after throwing that one out he started at the top of his "list of things to say" again.

Poor guy probably rang up his chinese students and complained "it not work".

Sometimes you just gotta play with them a bit. But remember - do not call a liar a liar....is not good when cj affiliate he is being.

I've got logs of other conversations with fraudulent affiliates, I'll definitely find some more and post them, as well as post anything that comes up in the future. We can certainly keep this thread going, and I suggest other aff. managers and network owners continue posting some of their stuff as well. But lets try to keep it classy. I've seen some things on youtube where networks are being very rude to fraudulent affiliates, I wont name names, but very unprofessional. Just nice to have some fun every once and a while .

Well, what you didn't say is if you had his middle name or initial.
A lot of people (for reasons I don't know) like to use their middle
name instead of their first name... although, I mostly agree with
the concept that if someone is using their middle name or another
name that is totally different, that

      --they are probably hiding something.

And, by the way... I don't see the point of this thread --

      To some it is funny? perhaps... kinda' boring if you ask me;
and first off, from a business standpoint, a total waste of
      time on many counts...

      1. The original application review
      2. Getting back to the person
      3. Reposting the conversation
      4. Airing this in this forum
      5. Me reading this
      6. And responding

I would be more interested in hearing what you are really
looking for and get some sort of education through the
whole read (I skim fast, of course -- rather than
knowing that there are people that are really so
desperate that they revert to making up fake
names, ssns, etc. just to make a buck.

Anyway, I am signed up with a number of CPA companies,
but this kind of posting doesn't add 1 ounce of credibility
to you as a business owner -- my 2 cents.

I am not trying to belittle anyone --
but I KNOW FOR A FACT that you can
do much better, and can, for sure, provide
something valuable to us with your extra time...

You could have a lot more WF CPA affiliates
IF you would provide free incentives to join
you, however, I didn't see an invitation.

Some of the best are here on Warrior Forum.

-Later... hope things will work out better
for you soon so that you are too busy to

        Hey MightyWarrior,

Thanks for your post. I understand where you're coming from, but allow me to respond:

The reason of this post was to shed some light and have a little bit of fun in an industry which often times can be looked at as purely business/money. It often neglects things other than simply making money, but I like to remind myself that I'm a human, and as a human, I have feelings, emotions, etc. One being humor, which this thread is simply for.

As for me not being a credible business owner, I think it's a shame that you feel that way. I don't understand how you could take a simple post like this as a representation of the company I represent. In fact, if you read reviews of CPATrend, you (and others) I'm sure will change your opinion about our network.

This is one of the only posts that I've made in the WF that was generally not helpful or serious, feel free to read up on my other posts. Those people who have worked with me know that I mean business, and I know the industry, and have a very good sense of what it takes to run an affiliate network. Additionally, I don't feel that I have to provide incentives for people to join my network. Our offers are up in various places, and we provide our affiliates with a great experience in working with a CPA network. That should be incentive enough for a serious affiliate marketer, who is looking for good offers, good payouts, and good support. I'm not here to simply advertise my network, I'm here to become a part of a great community.

So anyway, I hope you can reevaluate your judgment of me as a person/business owner and see that underneath what I do for a living lays a person just like anybody else. Even billionaire corporate executives have senses of humor.

Originally Posted by MightyWarrior View Post

A lot of people (for reasons I don't know) like to use their middle

the concept that if someone is using their middle name or another
name that is totally different, that

        --they are probably hiding something.

And, by the way... I don't see the point of this thread --

        To some it is funny? perhaps... kinda' boring if you ask me;
and first off, from a business standpoint, a total waste of
        time on many counts...

Fraudsters, yes even fraudsters have a reason for being....well, frauds I guess. (as long as they get caught, that is) Had it not been for this guy I never would have found this wonderful collection of CPA Network Signatures all-in-one-place.

I have a 19 and a 23 year old, one 1st year and 4th college and for the life of me I can't figure out why they don't show more interest in supplement their incomes. I'm sure if they found something they like to to, that would change.

My question: Would my 23 year old's blog, AudioVerdict.com get approved? Is there anything that needs changing for these offers? I know very little about CPA offers but I've heard they are all the rage if you can get approved and know how to drive targeted traffic.

Also, if I ask a question on a WSO from last January will I get in trouble? I did that once and got banned for 3 days for bringing up - bumping an old WSO which at the time, I didn't even know what bumping or WSO was or bother to check the dates. What's the deal with that?

I don't mean to go off in another direction, so if this is in the wrong thread, let me know and I'll move it. Thanks, Leah

    Good job mate!

At least the fraudster will never attempt to abuse your affiliate network. I really hate fraud-type affiliates that abuse or violate the TOS of the affiliate or CPA program. No matter what tactics they have, they will always lose. Professional affiliate and CPA programs are too smart to investigate and with common sense too.

    Heads up for that!

Lol thanks everybody. In this scenario, this was one of the easiest people to catch. Anybody in my position would've seen this from talking to the guy for a minute. It's the more intelligent, proper-english-speaking fraudsters that are harder to catch. That's what takes the real investigation (stuff that wouldn't be posted here because it's not nearly as funny).

I know there's a lot of network owners/affiliate managers here, if anybody else has any funny conversations like this, lets keep the thread rolling! In a relatively serious business, it's nice to be able to have some fun as well!

      I absolutely agree.

One of my biggest passions is entepreneurship and one thing I have noticed is that the most successful of businesses are those that work at all levels of the value chain. To make a business work, vendors, customers, clients, distributors, suppliers, merchants, advertisers, everybody in the value chain need to be better off because of working with that business.

In the case of CPA, the business model as a whole works extremely well when things are done right. Affiliates use their set up skills to get good leads and make good money from selling these leads to the merchants who make good money by monetizing these leads. The networks make good money by coordinating the efforts to maximize the potential of the affiliates and the merchants. Everybody has a role and everybody makes out at the end of the day if things are done right.

When these fraudsters step into the picture, it messes with the harmony and equilibrium of the relationships in the value chain. Merchant dont get value from bad or fake leads and dont want to pay the networks who dont want to pay the affiliates. Overall, nobody makes out, except in the chance that the fraudster doesnt get caught (this time around).

Its also important to remember that advertisers and networks can also lead to the collapse of the value chain as well if they are doing sketchy and unethical things that dont provide value. Its not always at the affiliate end where the breakdown in the chain occurs. Just something to think about

(12:02:10 AM) fraudster: Yes Im from China
(12:02:30 AM) CPATrendPhil: So why did you sign up claiming you're from Florida in the US?
(12:03:13 AM) fraudster: I thought you not accept International people
(12:03:20 AM) fraudster: so I use a US info

Another funny story from me just an hour ago:

A man apply to our network, his IP is 123.162.129.248 and his address is:
xxx coluso RANCHO SANTA, MARGARITA, CA, US 92688

I test his sign up location and found out it is in China. I phoned him to interview (just 4 fun cos I know it is about 95% fraud) & see the phone switch to voice mail immediately.

We do interview all affiliates so any affiliate with non existing phone will be considered as fraud and got rejected.

I post an image, just for illustration. All privacy reserved, affiliates private information will not be shared in any case.

90% of the people applying to CPA networks are fraud. That is a fact.

Rainbow Blvd, PO box's in NYC, Oakland CA and many other areas are the addresses these guys use.

A good portion of that 90% are applying with the intentions of using stolen CC's to buy products through CPA links to get the commission. By the time the network or advertiser catch on its usually to late.

This is pretty scary, then how about those that succeeded in gaining entry, I bet many did and that's why the news are spreading in their community and many are trying their luck to get in as its easy money providing rubbish leads.

I guess that's the reason why scrubbing is so rampant now, I just hope all the networks take some measure to really curb these as this will have a detrimental effect in the long run especially for those honest affiliates who works their ass off.

Honestly, that sounds like way too much work for way too little pay. To make it worth it they would have to use ( at least ) 1,000 different credit cards with each offer paying $30, and they would have to buy from 1,000 different IP addresses. Then all the leads would have to be verified, I think they would catch on pretty quickly.

I don't think 90% of everyone that applies is a fraud, that's an awfully high number.

It also depends what you define fraud as. I start with any false information on applications and consider that fraud, especially when it's somebody submitting somebody elses information. We're very strict on approvals, so we don't see much of the negative repercussions of allowing fraudulent affiliates into the network. But we certainly reject a higher percentage of accounts than we approve.

This is pretty funny and sad yet very sad at the same time, we also run into a lot of these guys. Some people are so stuck on doing fraud that they never take the time to think about how to earn money legitimately with affiliate marketing. Rather, they will waste their time signing up for multiple networks and crossing their fingers hoping they get accepted and paid.

The problem is, a lot of the 'actual guys' are hiring these fraudsters to sign up and get them approved. I'd say the majority. If you look around various forums, you'll constantly see people saying "Need CPA accounts, PM me" blah blah. I've infiltrated a bit, and every time it's somebody trying to buy accounts -- which is basically somebody buying access to another person's personal information so that they can sign up with it.

That's why we take people signing up with IP addresses that do not match their location so seriously.

Additionally, if somebody is dumb enough to give their SSN and all other private information to somebody who will be committing fraud, they deserve their identification to be stolen.

Thats the part I find so amazing. Normally to apply you must enter all kinds of personal information including, but not limited to your SSN. Why would anybody hand this info over to a third party who is presumably going to do sketchy things and thats why they didnt want or couldnt sign up themselves. Just doesnt make sense.

Then again, lots of people do stupid things in the name of earning a buck. Its unfortunate that these people (presumably these people need the money bad) are the ones that get burned.

First of all, I dont understand why people go for providing wrong information. If they are from china or somewhere else, they can still get approved and accepted if they are having some real plans for promotion of offers.
In some places, i do have seen people asking questions like, "I have been accepted in xxxxxxxxxxx CPA network, Please tell me how to make money?"
I wonder how they got accepted?

But after reading this entertaining thread, i came to know the real story of hard working CPA owners and their security as well as those idiot fraudsters who just read 4 lines and mug up answers to those question, and try to get accepted in the CPA network.

Or perhaps they provide wrong information because they have already been banned or that identity is already known amongst network owners (they share info). The only way to get around is to essentially come up with a new identity or pay somebody else to use theirs.

There are tons of specific black hat marketers who are capable of producing fraudulent leads quite easily. However, they were terminated from each network that they worked with (generally speaking), and therefore look for other people who have or can get accounts for them to work under (each account requires a specific tax ID for US citizens). They offer a percentage of their generated revenue for these accounts.

Also, they ALWAYS keep the monthly revenue at a relatively stable amount, something that shouldn't catch the eye of an AM who isn't very active in watching the traffic of their affiliates.

However, it's always peculiar for somebody to earn the same amount every month, and never try to vamp up their traffic, so I tend to keep my eye on accounts like this (then again, I keep my eye on everything.. obsessively lol)

I don't want to give out too many details, but these seem pretty obvious to me, and you see this garbage happen ALL over the net relatively publicly.

This is absolutely hilarious, Phil! You caught them red-handed, but you'd have done so anyway if you had called them on the phone. It'd have been even worse, because they probably wouldn't have understood much of what you said. It is great that the majority of the good CPA networks out there have a dedicated and committed fraud/compliance department that prevents these fraudsters from ever signing up on the networks - I know it'd reflect very badly on you if you were providing your advertisers with a ton of fraudulent leads. By having a vigilant compliance department, you greatly lessen the possibility of this happening.

Hey Paulie, I'm glad you get the big picture of posts like this! Fraud is such an incredibly be 'popular' thing for people to do in the industry. You wouldn't believe the amount of applications we turn down and other networks turn down for fraudulent applications, and also occasionally the fraudulent traffic some publishers push. I have some pretty interesting ideas for the future of fraud protection that should be hitting the industry soon for cases like this . It's also great what most affiliates do not see behind the scenes. You'd be surprised with how friendly networks are with each other, and how happily willing to help they are when it comes to protecting the quality of the affiliates in circulation. Many companies check references, which I highly recommend.

And also, there's a lot of times that I certainly could call, and usually do. However, there's some times that it would just be simple to ask on instant messengers. The reason being, I'll check an application, and ask preliminary questions (if I see an account that looks good but has some flags). Then if I'm satisfied, I'd move on with a phone interview. But I also don't sleep much! I'm online all day and night lol.

Phil, thanks for enlightening us a little more about what goes on in the minds of good affiliate managers! I had already known that many of the big networks share affiliate information with each other, so it's best not to get caught doing anything anything bad at the big networks because that could land you in big trouble with any other networks that you're in!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't many of the big networks also use the same link tracking system that makes it extremely easy to identify the bad affiliates across the connected networks once you've spotted them?

It's interesting you say that Sarah. I don't really think I have good patience. I'm extremely anal about lots of things. When it comes to stuff like payments, I'm always sending emails/making phone calls making sure payments will be on time, or I'm always anal with sending payments out as well. When it comes to fraud though, 9/10 times I'll simply reject an application. Every now and then though, I'll see a person's application that looks alright, but there might be one flag, which I like to quickly ask about. Most people that I ask quickly give themselves away to me, but others you gotta play around for a bit to get the info that you need. So in terms of fraud, I'm patient because I like to get as much info as possible to come to a conclusion. Also, the longer my conversation with the fraudsters are, the more quality material I can bring to this thread :p.

This post is so funny...and sad. Sad to the fact that there is so much fraud in the business. People don't realize but its much harder to come up with ways to fraud the system than there is coming up with ways to run a successful legitimate campaigns. Once you find what works then there is so many ways to ramp up and let it run. If you are trying to fraud the system whatever you're doing its not going to last and it will all come crashing down. Now you're going to have to try and come up with another way to cheat the system.

    (3:44:46 PM) CPATrendPhil: Okay
(3:44:58 PM) CPATrendPhil: I can already see an issue with your application.
(3:45:13 PM) CPATrendPhil: Your IP address does not match the listed address.
(3:45:15 PM) CPATrendPhil: Why is this?
    (3:45:15 PM) Fraudster8: okey
    (3:45:43 PM) Fraudster8: I work in GA

    (3:54:04 PM) Fraudster8: CPATrendPhil 12:50 pm
(12:50:39 PM): You're there for long periods of time?
    (3:54:07 PM) Fraudster8: YEP
(3:54:13 PM) CPATrendPhil: I mean in georgia
(3:54:29 PM) CPATrendPhil: Are you in georgia right now?
    (3:54:47 PM) Fraudster8: yep
    (3:55:44 PM) Fraudster8: I'm in CA now
    (3:56:19 PM) CPATrendPhil: ?
(3:57:08 PM) CPATrendPhil: It's amazing that you can be in two places at once. Okay, in order to consider your account, you'll have to send me in your Georgia state ID.
    (3:58:14 PM) Fraudster8: Tomorrow ok?
(3:58:28 PM) CPATrendPhil: Sure. Do you live in California?
    (3:58:49 PM) Fraudster8: yep
(3:59:05 PM) CPATrendPhil: Okay, so if you could send me in a scan of both your ID's that'd be great.
(3:59:13 PM) CPATrendPhil: You can email that over to Phil@CPATrend.com
    (3:59:33 PM) Fraudster8: I have two homes
(3:59:45 PM) CPATrendPhil: Cool, you can verify that by showing me two ID's.
(4:00:29 PM) Fraudster8: California id ok?
(4:00:57 PM) CPATrendPhil: I'm more concerned with the Georgia one.
(4:01:06 PM) CPATrendPhil: Because you signed up with a georgia address from california
(4:01:10 PM) CPATrendPhil: Usually this is due to fraud
    (4:02:14 PM) Fraudster8: I have no fraud
(4:02:34 PM) Fraudster8: plz believe me
(4:02:35 PM) CPATrendPhil: Okay, so provide me with the evidence I require, and we'll be good to go.
(4:02:43 PM) CPATrendPhil: Just send me your Georgia license.
(4:02:46 PM) CPATrendPhil: Do you have a scanner?
(4:02:52 PM) CPATrendPhil: it takes 2 minutes
    (4:03:24 PM) Fraudster8: sorry
    (4:03:32 PM) CPATrendPhil: About what?
    (4:03:47 PM) Fraudster8: nope
(4:03:58 PM) CPATrendPhil: How about a camera?
    (4:04:20 PM) Fraudster8: yep
(4:04:43 PM) CPATrendPhil: Okay, you can take a picture of it and upload it to the computer. Just make sure it's clear. Then you can email me the photo to Phil@CPATrend.com
(4:06:18 PM) Fraudster8: you Promise my ID is safe?
(4:06:46 PM) CPATrendPhil: Of course, you're just sending me your photo ID so that I can confirm the information on the application you gave was accurate.
(4:08:09 PM) Fraudster8: I don't want to send my ID
(4:09:01 PM) CPATrendPhil: Is it because you don't have one and the information you provided was fraudulent? I can't imagine why you would sign up with a Georgia address if you have an address in California and such.
(4:10:14 PM) Fraudster8: i can sign up in California address
(4:10:29 PM) CPATrendPhil: We don't allow multiple sign ups.
(4:10:48 PM) CPATrendPhil: You get one shot. I mentioned to you in advance to make sure all of your information is accurate.
(4:11:16 PM) CPATrendPhil: If you can't send me a photo of your Georgia ID, there's no way I can get you approved into the network, unfortunately.
(4:12:13 PM) Fraudster8: You are mean
    (4:12:17 PM) Fraudster8: O:-)
(4:16:00 PM) Fraudster8: plz Through the review OK?? i hope join in
    (4:16:12 PM) CPATrendPhil: No.
(4:16:25 PM) CPATrendPhil: If you send in your Georgia state ID, I'm all for reviewing your application.
(4:16:30 PM) CPATrendPhil: If you can't do this, there's no chance.
    (4:17:13 PM) Fraudster8: i don't have Georgia state ID
(4:17:24 PM) CPATrendPhil: You said you did before
    (4:17:48 PM) Fraudster8: I didn't say
(4:18:37 PM) CPATrendPhil: You certainly implied it. Either way, I know you're a fraudulent affiliate. So right now we're just wasting each others time.
(4:18:50 PM) CPATrendPhil: Sorry, we can't work together.
(4:19:08 PM) CPATrendPhil: There's hundreds of other networks, and I'm sure you'll be able to slip in the through the cracks at another.
(4:20:27 PM) Fraudster8: i just want to join your
(4:20:46 PM) CPATrendPhil: It's not gonna happen, sorry. Good luck elsewhere.

This is darn funny. I wish I could post some too but I never saved them. Whether fraud or not I think it was the right call to not accept suspicious affiliates.

I have a membership site where i used to offer free trial, but I had a swarm of chinese sign ups, they'd attempt to sign up with chinese interface then switch to english and english names. they just created many many accounts and never used it. Eventually I had to block free trials alltogether. Even though my site clearly displays that you need to complete payment in order for account activation they continue to register but never complete payment page. >.<
I used to be a bit green back then so I used to email them asking if they had trouble or if they can use this quick link to finish the process. 99% never replied rest said " I no money, I no english" I gathered it was a waste of time eventually and stopped bothering.

i have given up. I just let it be.

Okay this one is short, but definitely enjoyable .

I called a guy and asked him how his 1 month old site is receiving 100k uniques per month as he claimed on the application. He said through blog posts and article submissions. So I said, "wow that's a ton of traffic for article submissions". He answered in a cocky way, probably assuming I'm an idiot.

So I said.. "well, link me to one of your blog posts or articles so that I can verify that actually is one of your traffic sources."

His response: "That's against my ethics. Just deny me if you want but I wont show you that."

So I just kept pushing it. I said something like "I don't understand why you can't show me a simple blog post or article that you wrote which verifies that your traffic is coming from there."

    He hangs up.

We had previously been speaking on AIM, so I shot him over an IM:

(5:09:09 PM) CPATrendPhil: Sorry <name>, we're all about transparency, and if we can't be transparent with each other we can't work together. I wish you the best of luck elsewhere though and wish you success.
(5:10:49 PM) CPATrendPhil: All I was asking for was to see an article you wrote which is linking to your site to prove that your statements were true. We deal with tons of fraudulent applications on a daily basis. I mean, I know that you were planning on pushing fraud because that's something that all whitehat marketers have no problem showing me (and do show me on a daily basis). If you reconsider, I can reconsider your application. Have a good day.

    (5:18:14 PM) fraudster9: you there?
(5:22:37 PM) CPATrendPhil: Yes I'm here. I'm not asking to see what you wrote. I'm asking to see where your traffic source is. Show me proof that articles/blogs are producing 40-50,000 uniques per month for you.
