My experience is limited (only a few CB campaigns) so this is just opinion, but I don't know if I would say CPS is worse or better than CPA. I would just say CPA is generally easier on Facebook than CPS. However, I admit CPS may be better suited to other platforms than Facebook since people really aren't looking to buy.

For CPS you have to bank on a higher payout to make up for a low Facebook conversion rate. The take away for me is it costs more to "test" a CPS campaign which is why I would say it's more difficult.

For example, what if I were a real estate agent selling a house using Facebook Ads (yes this is an extreme example and not exactly CPS but you get the point ). For each sale let's say I make $10k. This could be a horrible offer for Facebook but how do you know without testing? For a GOOD ad banking 100% ROI I have to spend $5k to make ONE conversion. Now, how about all those bad ads? How much do I have to test and spend just to weed out the bad ads... $10k, $20k, $30k... heck my prospects are probably going to be banner blind before I even finish testing .

That's too rich for my blood. I'd rather know my campaign is flop or a winner long before I hit $10k. And hey I can hit 100% ROI either way, so what's the advantage? That's why I prefer CPA to CPS on Facebook.

In the end I guess we would have to pit several CPA offers against several CPS offers and test away. Anyone want to front the cash ? Ultimately, I would tend to agree CPA would probably be the winner with social traffic. Just don't rule out CPS completely, it can work.

@kayaman: OK all that said. If you've spent $400 on Facebook without a conversion something is probably wrong. As suggested, try out CPA, it really is the way to go on Facebook.

@Mooble: This campaign is impression based (CPM) since my CTR was high enough. Facebook does do cost per click (CPC) also and I have made a profit this way too. If your CTR is high enough CPM is best (as of this week anyway , Facebook does sometimes change their algorithm).

And you are absolutely correct about sustainability. The temptation when you are new is to do anything and everything to make a quick buck.

Though this isn't ideal, it is logical and understandable. In fact, many of the people I teach, I also suggest they do some quick money making methods to make some quick money even if its nto long term driven. The reason I suggest this is for motivation. If I can get somebody making $50 a day by bumming it and then spend the rest of the day on long term strategy and building a real business, that quick cash goes a long way to motivate the person and keep them in the game long enough for their long term business to take off.

For example, a marketer who exclusively spends all their time and energy building a long term SEO campaign can easily get frustrated and quit if they work hard for 3 weeks without making a dime (SEO campaigns often take a while to get going). However, if that same person spent 2 hours of the day bumming it to make just $20 per day, they are much more motivated to keep plugging along for weeks and months to come. They are getting a taste of the light at the end of the tunnel.

So yes, sustainability and long term profit is absolutely awesome. Its the goal, but sometimes a partial short term quick cash strategy, although not ideal, can be very beneficial.
