If you own a Kindle or an Ipad I could use your advice

I do not own either of the above but am looking for advice from those that do. I have hundreds of pdf files and e-reports and would like to find a portable device that would allow me to easily install the files for later reading from various locations, other then my PC. Many of the pdf files have graphics, such as the wso offers, and I would want them to be viewable within the pdf once transferred to the portable device. What do you recommend as the best device to use for reading pdf files. Thanks

    I'd go with the iPad over the Kindle. That's what I did and I couldn't be happier. I wanted to do the same as you and I looked at the Kindle (and especially the Kindle DX), but after I played around with the iPad at the Apple store, I was hooked. If you get the app, Air Sharing HD, it will let you mount your iPad as a wireless drive and you can copy all your PDFs to it and read them at your leisure. There are probably other apps that do the same thing, but Air Sharing seemed the best when I got my iPad. Plus you can still get the free Kindle app if you have Kindle books you want to read on it. Hope this helps.

      Thank You. I looked up the Air Sharing HD on the Apple site, and I have to agree with you. Looks like exactly the app I need. I prefer the Ipad - just wasn't sure how to load the pdf files from my PC. Thanks again.

    Any PDF with complex formatting reads much better on the iPad than the Kindle.

      I would also go with the iPad.

      I purchased my iPad in January and I can't put into word how p****d I am that I did not purchase it earlier. Like, on the day of release.

      I never got on with Apple computers and have never owned one, not even an iPhone before the iPad. The lack of instructions was a bit strange, and there are some features that I did not have a clue about until someone showed me.

      e.g.
      Taking a screen shot. Single quick press on the home and sleep buttons together. It's great for salespage pics.

      or

      Scrolling through a document in a window on a page. Most annoying at first, until someone told me, 2 fingers instead of 1.

      It is excellent for reading .pdf's, great for surfing, perfect for multiple email accounts, has a wordpress app that makes posting just simple as anything.

      SERPS apps.
      My 3 and 4 year old absolutely love it, more than the TV!! That's saying something for a 4 year old.

      You'll wonder how you did without it.

      Everyone should have one.

      Another really simple, and free method: Email them to your iPad. You can use an app called to Docs2Go, it will then allow you to save them on the iPad. Plus, you can then read and edit lots of other office / text based filed. Word, Excel etc.

    I've got the KindleDX and the iPad. The iPad wins hands down for reading pdf's and pretty much everything except reading outside in bright sunlight! Programs like iAnnotatePDF and GoodReader (even iBooks) are great for pdf reading.

    You might want to take a look at the Sony Reader Daily Edition PRS-950SC. That is excellent for PDF's and is cheaper than an iPad.

      The current Sony readers have PDF reflow capabilities which make PDF documents easier to read on a small screen. Having e-ink displays they are also easier on the eyes can be read outdoors. But to view content in color you would have to use an ipad or nook color reader.

        I was going to ask this same question -

        But here's my problem. The kindle is $179. The iPad is a lot more than that.

        I can download ebooks, pdfs, .mobi files (kindle books), etc. I don't really need another computer. I seriously just want something to read both books and PDFs.

        Is Kindle, Nook, or iPad the way to go? Anyone throw in on this? Everyone I know who has a kindle loves it. Everyone I know who has an iPad loves it. But the big book readers have the kindle, and the Mac lovers have the iPad, so of course they're going to say that?

    How about any of the alternatives? Such as the Xoom and the Galaxy? Make sure to check those out. Apple is trendy, but some of the new tablets coming out are really dishing out some pretty cool features. Don't overpay for things that you don't need.

    I have a Kindle, and while it can display pdf files, you have to have the right pdf files. The problem is that with Kindle, if the font size is too small, you have to change the orientation to landscape to make the font appear even marginally large enough to read.

    The Kindle does not seem to be able to reflow pdf to fit the kindle screen... You may be able to increase the size, but if you do, you have to continually scroll bak and forth, which gets tiresome almost instantly. For a lot of pdf files, what I do is to save the file as text (.txt) and load it to the kindle instead of the pdf. No problems then, but if the pdf is protected, you can't readily extract the text. Downloading to the Kindle from my desktop or notebook is quick and easy with the included USB cable.
