Landing Page vs Direct Links

Hi All,

I have read a lot of people speak about having a landing page as the first visit to capture an email and then send the user on to the offer page.

Lets assume for this we are using PPC, so each click is costing us (as opposed to organic search which would be free and would frame the question differently).

Now, I can see the value of capturing an email, but it seems to me that the landing page could lose conversions, yet the clicks still want paying.

Take for example, we have the following advert:

[Midget Dating]
Find midgets in your area for love, friendship etc.

Now if a user clicks on that advert, are they not going to question and get pissed a bit on why they should give a third party an email to then get to the actual offer they want? They could easily not want a review and just want to get straight to signing up.

Could you lose conversions this way?

It seems to me a direct link is a much more solid user experience then having landing page bloat out the experience?

I ask this as you guys and girls have perhaps tested this and seen the numbers tell the story on the value of the LP.

If so please let me know, as I am now considering building some LP's as its difficult to get direct links approved....but I am not just not convinced while trying to see the logic in my own little head.

Your conversions may decrease on the frontend but in the backend you have the ability to sell different products again and again. When i first started IM,I asked the same question in this forum. But now I know that,I have to build a list.

If you dont capture email address of the visitor you may lose him/her forever if he/she does not like your offer and exit from your page.

So first thing you have to do is builing your own list and promote offers to your list.

well i disagree in some cases directlinking do work but u know where offer landing pages lead rite ? on the signup form ... let me give you an example lets say i have a click bank product for sale , and i have no sales page and i point my buyers to order form directly where i collect their information and i have given a bit of information about my product, now tell me how will someone buy that product without reading sales page etc ? no one the fact is that two lines of ad text or a simple banner ad are not enough to persuade a buyer.a visitor to give away his contact information . so to persuade and to win trust of a visitor landing page is must ..... you tell them about benefits and how that product can help them out or you review that product or service to win visitors trust .. Take an example of a WSO being sold over here on WF with no reviews at all and compare it with a wso with lots of reviews which one will sell most ?

If you direct link at least redirect from your domain. The reason is that at least you can change out the offer if it does not work out for you.

You don't always need to collect e-mails on landing pages. Typically landing pages are used to just pre-sell on the offer, to help bridge the gap between the ad and the advertisers landing page..

This is different for every campaign you run. I suggest you split test a direct link versus a landing page to start out and see what works best. IM is all about split testing all the time

Personally I like LPs as you have a bit more control of what's going on and helps with presell. You don't want to give away all your hard work by direct linking, there may be opportunities to cross-sell etc. Good luck!

Ahhh the classic debate between landing pages and direct linking, it will always rage on and the only way to really know if it's going to work for a certain offer is to go out and test it.

However, here is my 2 cents as they say.

I personally will only use direct linking when looking to determine whether the advertisers landing page actually converts. That is it, very rarely have I ever ran a campaign where direct linking beats out a landing page.

As a marketer you have to question what is your value to the advertisers sales funnel if you are simply driving traffic to their page??? Nothing, you are simply benefiing from simple traffic arbitrage, and while you may secure some profit, the campaign will eventually burn out and you'll have to start from scratch with a whole new campaign.

With a landing page not only are you able to capture an email to monetise that visitor multiple times, but you are also able to pre sell the visitor.

Now what exactly does this mean??? Lets take a look at an advertisers page for a dating offer.

Single? Meet and chat with other singles looking for love - Free registration (not an affiliate link)

What exactly is that page communicating to someone other than, sign up to meet people?? How many times have you seent his type of page, how many times has a potential user seen this tye of page. It doees nothing to convince someone that this is THE dating site for them.

With a landing page you have more scope and opportunity to tap into a users needs, wants, desires, address their concerns, you are able to specifically address why theis website is the ONLY dating website they will need.

I hope this helps some of you out.

It all depends if the LP is good and leads the user straight to the point. It needs to have 1 lead to action item, Not to big that it all fits above the fold, and presents the offer itself with out many others in order to direct the user and not confuse him.
