Prosper202: Tracking 3rd Party Referrers / Conversions

Hello Everyone

I am very new to tracking software, so I wanted to know: 1) is the scenario I outline below how to track conversions / referers with prosper202... And 2) if it is, can anyone give me a walk through on how to set this up? I would really appreciate it as I am stumped.. (This is not an affiliate / cpa offer, but my own product.. However I think this sub forum is the only one with users using prosper202 in bulk.)

1) Visitors get sent to my landing page from random websites / sources that show the referrer (this wont be anything like adwords, pof etc.. lets just say random sources / backlinks)

2) I assume I need some type of pixel on my landing page to track the number of visitors that come from each referer...

3) Visitor buys my ebook via Paypal...

4) After purchasing my ebook, visitor gets sent to my thank you page (I should have a tracking pixel on the thank you page)

5) Now I can see statistics / conversion percentages for EACH REFERER, on how many people bought the ebook vs. how many simply landed on the landing page and eventually left. Using these statistics I can cut out certain traffic sources / referers if they are performing poorly

Does this sound accurate? If so, does anyone know how to set this up in prosper? If anyone can help, I again would certainly appreciate it! thanks will be given

Prosper202 is more for PPC campaigns, not tracking affiliates for your site. Especially if you are direct linking from all these sites it won't work. Prosper202 needs people to enter your site via a specific tracking/redirect url. If you are doing stuff like article marketing, directories, etc and just giving a link to your homepage then you need a different method - Google Analytics.

If you setup Goal tracking in Google Analytics it will track this. You might need to build a Custom Report in Google Analytics to show you referrers and conversions from each, but that's a pretty straight forward thing to do once you have goals enabled and tracking properly.

Alternatively, if you are doing paid ads AND seo, then you can do what I do:

Paid Traffic -> Prosper202 -> Website w/tracking links for Google Analytics
Organic Traffic -> Website w/Google Analytics

    Hey Christian..

Thanks for the reply, I really really appreciate it!

I have used Google analytics before, but more so just as an alternative to Awstats...

I never thought to use to it accomplish this.

But basically, yea my traffic will be coming from random sources / websites, and they all will have the referrer there.

I would like to ask, is how I laid this out the way I should use it with Google analytics? (code on home page to track all visitors and code on thank you page to track conversions)?

    Thanks for your help

Here's what you need to do (you need to have Google Analytics installed and working on your site before doing this of course):

    1) Setup Goals in Google Analytics. Here's the guide written by Google: Set up Goals - Analytics Help You want to setup a Goal that will track sales since you are selling an ebook.

    2) Once Goals are tracking properly and you have verified it's working, the next thing you need to do is create a Custom Report in Google Analytics. This is done by clicking on "Custom Reporting" in the top navigation when you have the analytics profile loaded up. Drag Referrers (or Referring URLs or whatever it's called in the custom reports) into the left column, then drag Conversions (or Goals or whatever it's called in the Custom Reporting section) and drag it across the top part of the report.

Google will then give you the report which shows you how many conversions you got from every referring url for the date range you specify.

    Wow. Ok, thanks.

Saved me a big head ache.

It seems I can also see the amount of money made from each referrer which is extremely cool.

    Thanks again

It turns out you don't need a Custom Report in GA to do it, they have a standard report for it. I just did this in one of my accounts.

Once you have Goals setup and working, go into the standard reports in Google Analytics, then click on Traffic Sources, then on Sources, then on Referrals. That will load a referral report which shows you generic metrics like page views/visit, time on site, etc. But right above the graph is an "Ecommerce" button, if you hit that it turns the report in conversions per referring url instead of general metrics per referring url

    Thanks again for the info!

I've already booked marked this thread.. GA is amazing, didn't even know its full power before.

Would you happen to know the best route to go for split testing different landing pages also in this scenario? (same product, just different graphics or copy for the landing page)..

I always see people talk about split testing, but never see the solution they use.. Just wondering if you had any experience with that.

Well the free testing plaform was Google Websie Optimizer, but that's gone now. Google now has something called Content Experiments, you can read about it here: The Benefits - Analytics Help

Aside from that, you need to fork out money for a testing platform if you want to get really into it. A really good one I was using for the past few years is Visual Website Optimizer. Their system is amazing and easy to use, but you are looking at $200+/month depending on how much traffic you get. Website: A/B Testing Tool | Split Testing and Multivariate Testing Software - Visual Website Optimizer

What a lot of people do is just try making changes to pages for a week and compare the stats to the previous week. It's not a very scientific way of doing things, but if you are careful it can give you a somewhat reasonable way of testing.

    Thanks again.

I had taken a look at the visual site optimizer before.. It's actually a decent price, if you have HIGHLY targeted traffic... So it's less traffic needed for conversions..

But wow, yea looks like you can do anything with analytics.. I'll definitely look into that for split testing.

    Very informative thread

Hey Christian could you explain how you are using prosper202? I just downloaded it and I'm kind of still lost as to what I need to do. Can't really put my finger on what all is needed to get everything working and what I should be looking out for putting it together with my site.

I will be doing ppc on fb and maybe adwords and I just want to know how to use it effectively using these traffic sources. do you maybe have a video walk thru of an example you have?

    Thanks in advance

    Rick

There's a lot of guides out there like Mr Lim linked to. But really you just need to sit down and play around with it to get the hang of it. Prosper202 has so many features and most people don't use it to it's full potential.
