Is the word "Free" really important while promoting an offer?

I was advised or maybe forced not to used the word "Free" while starting out on CPA, and I'm wondering what if I don't use the word "Free", will that kill my conversion, many hestitation goes about but I just need as my network say so.

So I actually take off the word from my ad copies for example,

Before
Claim Your Free iPad 2 Here Now!
After
Get iPad 2 Now!

I was pretty worry, because the method I've always sticked with, works! But hey, result proves that your audience doesn't really cares instead, it makes them wonders, wondering what's on your next page.

Yeah, it probably hurt the conversion but the quality traffic should be good.

    I almost always use it.

Do a split test for the specific ad if you are wondering.

I think they (Google especially) discourage it because the word free might be misleading, sometimes they are not really free, like for example a free trial that requires you to submit your credit card info and it rebills for consequent months.

I think it discourages things a bit. Yes you'll get the click, but your conversion rate might be lower.

People online are so skeptical. If something is free, they think there's some strings attached and don't do it.

Split testing would probably work best, you might even get different results for each traffic source especially if you are using banners, text, pops etc.

It depends on the ads, niche, etc. but often i find it can really help. Keep in mind that it can also hurt - always split test everything
