Can somebody explain these terms to me?

I understand that it is when the offer is not marking as valid your potential customers and therefore the cpa network is not paying you those leads...

Am I correct?, what's the difference between the two?
Why does this happen? How to avoid it? How to know when it's happening?

Thanks a lot!

If i recall correctly, scrubbing is when the advertiser doesn't pay you for some of the leads that you've generated and shaving is when the advertiser does pay, but the affiliate network keeps some of the commission for itself.

In both cases (scrubbing and shaving), the process starts with surfers completing the physical steps required to generate leads for a campaign.

Scrubbing happens when a lead is determined to be invalid by the merchant using some sort of validation logic. This validation can include e-mail bounce checking, credit card charge processing, matching for duplicates in a database, verifying the lead for correct address, etc. When validation fails, the lead is removed from the affiliate. The lead is removed in one of two ways: either the pixel is not fired and no lead is tracked, or the lead is reversed from the affiliate's stats.

Shaving happens when a merchant arbitrarily decides not to fire a pixel. This is not based on any sort of validations - it's done randomly so that the merchant can hit a profit target.

Scrubbing - merchant finds that the leads are not valid ( either duplicates or not completed info)

Shaving - merchant hides the leads.

Very well said and the reasons behind such acts are also stated.

May I add that shaving is becoming natural these days especially when some merchants are looking to hit on some profit targets. All publishers are randomly hit so it sucks for newbies trying to get their first $100 and its nothing to CPA moguls who get thousands weekly.

Scubbing- for some of your leads you don't get payment. Actually the advertisers don't pay the company.
Shaving - is that the company don't pay but the network get some commissions.
