Beginner hosting plan for tracking software (CPVLab)?

Hi guys,

I'd like to start using paid traffic and I'm looking for cheapest VPS hosting option.

I understand that I need a vps for prosper202 or cpvlab, but I've only had the shared hosting accounts so far so I have no insight in what I really need regarding the vps.

What I learned so far is that I would probably need fully managed VPS with cpanel included, and in that case there should be minimum 1GB dedicated RAM included in the package because of cpanel. But the fact is that I don't know if I really need cpanel, I just suppose that I need it since I'm familiar with it from shared hosting.

Such packages with cPanel (and Virtuozzo Power Panel) included, and 1 GB RAM, cost minimum $50 per month, and I'd like to start with something cheaper, if there are such options.

If there's no cpanel included I'd still need some user friendly interface to install software, mysql databases, cron jobs, configure various things etc. How is that done without cpanel, is it easy or pain in the ***?

Some good tips would be highly appreciated.

Be careful, cheap doesn't equal quality many times in the very non-transparent hosting world.

    I would suggest checkout Beyond-Hosting.

Or starting out with Prosper202 to save money.

FutureHosting or KnownHost both have Managed VPS with 1GB RAM and cPanel that should run you around $35-$40/month

KnownHost seems to be a good option.

But since they don't sell SSL certificate like FutureHosting, I would have to buy one elsewhere.

What kind of SSL certificate do I actually need for domain that is dedicated to my tracking software only?

The cheapest one you can find. PositiveSSL at $7.95/year will do the trick. Namecheap's as good an SSL reseller as any:

Hi Almin, I started with Beyond Hosting but then moved to KnownHost VPS for my PPV campaigns, CPVLab for tracking and using SSL. Don't know much about CentOS but the service and support has been excellent. E.g. I just pay say $8 for an SSL cert and get their technician to set it up, not worth my time trying to figure out. I've also got their Techs to setup GeoIP blocking for countries that I'm not interested in any traffic from. Support is 24x7, and fast within mins. I also did a lot of research initially, including speed testing as PPV campaigns can hit the server hard. Good luck!

          Thanks for all information.

What's the result of your server speed testing?
Are you happy with KnownHost server speed?

Fine with the speed, no issues. The main thing is I don't have to worry about downtime and speed which I had quite a bit with shared hosting when they throttle your CPU if your site gets busy.

I was on the Hybrid plan but they don't offer that anymore so might be VPS 7 equivalent. The speed test was done by myself and I'm not a professional so don't really want to compare in a public forum on two great hosting companies. I also had nginx installed to further speed up Apache on the server, just told their Tech to do it as I have no clue how to do it myself. Hope that helps.

One more thing, I use NameCheap for my domain names hosting, and the $8 Comodo SSL cert. I then download the cert details and send it to their techs to setup to the specific domain name and it gets done within half an hour or something like that.

If you're looking for the cheapest option, why don't you use a hosted tracker? It'll cost you less than a *good* managed VPS, and you won't have to manage and maintain software on top of it.

Don't go for paid options if you are beginner. I have heard good things about bevomedia which is a free self hosted tracking solution and going to try them out. I would suggest try them before moving on to the paid options.

I see Greedy already recommended Beyond Hosting. I recommend them too. Their support is top-notch. Otherwise, you can attempt to do everything yourself - but it's not recommended if you're a newbie or not too techy.

KnownHost is simply the best VPS specialized host with great value. Look around all of the webhosting forums and they are the consensus pick. They're also running a promo now for 15% off your monthly fee for the entire lifetime of your plan. I would give them a shot if I were you.

if you looking for cheap vps,
i would recommend using unmanaged vps, using centOS or Ubuntu,,

but its need some effort to set it up,,

i am running my prosper on unmanaged vps, that cost me $19/year,,
i am newbie, so i can't afford for managed vps,,

i just need 1 hour to set my prosper to running on my unmanaged vps,
if you can't set it up by yourself, you hire someone on fiver to do it,,

it's been an absolute nightmare for me thus far.

they migrated my site(s) over, but then all of a sudden they blocked my ip from being able to actually interact with the sites...kinda hard to track when you cant see the damn tracking server.

then they somehow, magically, deleted all my site info...so now they may have to re-migrate it over, which may take hours because ive switched over the DNS info.

absolutely DISGUSTED with the lack of phone support.

there is nothing that pisses me off more than having to wait 15-20 minutes between emails....it takes HOURS to have a conversation that could be resolved in minutes.

      horrendous.

btw, beyond hosting is just a litespeed reseller...if you dont want the managed aspect, you can rent a vps from them for less than half the cost of beyond hosting.

When you do start making some money and no longer want to deal with shoddy oversold web hosting with incompetent support, these four hosts run over 98% of all tech startup websites/services:

    1. Amazon Web Services (inc. Heroku)
    2. Linode
    3. Softlayer
    4. Rackspace

This is based on an automated survey I did of 440 Silicon Valley companies that took seed funding or Series A financing in the past 3 years.

here's a back and forth ive had with their (BeyondHosting) CEO who emailed me probably as part of an autoresponder series asking if i need any help.

    my first response:

Good lord, please read through help ticket:
    View Ticket #XXXXXX

It's been an absolute NIGHTMARE dealing with your company thus far. You've cost me thousands of dollars and tons and tons of man hours wasted dealing with your stupid email only help system.

When i worked with inmotion, if i needed help, i picked up the phone, and someone answered in 2-3 mins TOPS. The issues were usually fixed within minutes.

It's been like 24 hours and your incompetent staff member Drake has totally screwed up my sites.

I'm VERY VERY VERY upset here.

    His response:

Hi XXXXXX, if you liked inmotion so much I can only suggest you simply move back there.

Our ticket based support works for all of our customers very well. We rarely ever have complaints about wanting phone based support.

We don't want you to be unhappy, if were not a fit for your needs then that's just how it is.

    My response:

so instead of reading the tickets and trying to address a customers issue, you simply say, essentially, go to hell?

wow, that's great level of support.

Can anyone suggest a good hosting company OTHER than Beyond Hosting? which to me has been an absolute NIGHTMARE and totally not worth the money?
