I know this is not right to do in Adwords but what about other paid traffic source? Can I promote direct?

You can promote with direct links on...

TrafficVance
LeadImpact
Plenty of Fish Ads
Bing Ads (If you do it right)

But yes, definitely stay away from adwords.

  Also important is what vertical you are promoting.
  
  Some, such as re-bills (teeth, biz-op, berrys etc) and dating will simply not work properly without a pre-sell lander.

you want to link to a landing page, so you can present an angle and continue the story from the ad itself... create a few of these to test. you should also include some squeeze page style lp's to capture an email address before submitting the user to the offer. This way, if they don't buy then and there, you can email them down the road to see if they might still be interested. usually you can convert good traffic when remarketing with email.
