What is an Ad Server?

I am total loss at what an ad server is.

The way I understand it, it should be a piece of software you put on your server and it serves ads when asked by a publisher's site. So I go out to all the publishers, give them a piece of code and they serve my ads on their site.

Now, I looked into few Ad Servers and they all look more like ad networks than like pieces of software.

Second question would be, are there any good free self-hosted ad servers with nice user interface. Something like Prosper202 is for tracking.

You're totally right. There are tons of ad platforms today, I'd suggest you to avoid OpenX, though they're old school, it doesn't mean a thing. Their analytics system is pure hell, IMHO.

SmartAdServer and Epom are great ones. Personally I like Epom better, cause they have network solution as well, plus thousand targeting features I've increased my earnings within a month after trying their platform. Plus they're free for 2 month. Both of them have tracking features.

SmartAdServer has plenty of rich media banners, quite user-friendly, but their pricing isn't suitable for me...

There is no pricing on the Epom's site. How much are they per month?
