Ideas to advertise pay per call phone numbers

I'm looking to bounce some ideas around on where are good places to get phone calls for pay per call leads from. I have the basics such as local online and hard copy newspapers, classifieds ad sites, yellowpages. I don't think I'm ready for billboards yet.

Wondering if anyone has some out of the box ideas? What do old people read? I figure they are more likely to call a number than fill out a lead form.

Have you tried yahoo or google local listings. One out of the box idea is to put a phone number on the side of a car or van.

How about ad networks such as Adwords? they have the call button on the ads lately too.

I tried that and wasted $500 because when they click the call feature on their phone, all it does is put the number in the dial pad and that counts as a "call". over 100 "calls" but only 2 connected calls.

That has always been one of my biggest problems with this method. However, you likely weren't prepared for this type of method for driving a call.

You have to prepare people to make a call. In your ad text use calls to action that mention a phone call. E.g. 'call now for a quick quote', 'call now to reserve your X,Y,Z'. If people aren't prepared they get confused by the dial pad showing up, and could likely click your ad again to figure out what's going on.

I've successfully run a few call campaigns target just mobile click to calls on AdWords. You need to find the right sort of service / product for this type of campaign.

I've been doing a little research and understand that Google has or is working to fix this problem. Anyone else know about it?

It's why they are pushing everyone over to enhanced campaigns which give you a forwarding number. In turn they will then have the info to know whether a call has been made or not. Patience is likely the key here.
