FB ads - CTR got killed after switch

I was running a FB ad (CPC) that got 8.1% CTR.

But when I switched to CPM so that I could get cheaper clicks for the exact same ad, my CTR plummeted to 0.4%

Why is this?

Because FB ads favor CPC over CPM. From what I've read, the CPC ads have the priority, and are shown before CPM ads, thus often perform better. However, CPM can be much much cheaper.

99% of the time the CPM will have a worse CTR the identical ad with CPC, however if you have a solid CTR, CPM would be much cheaper.

Also, 8.1% CTR on FB Ads? That's insane!

8.1% is an great CTR, nice work.

Facebook is weird in terms of CPM vs. CPC just have to experiment.

I agree with what Vojo said, and also you have to remember Facebook likes older "proven" ads over new ones.

Nice work. I've been able to hit 0.4% CTR with wide targeting. Are you interest or UID targeting?

Did you actually pause the CPC ad? Were both your ads in the same campaign? If you have them both turned on it's likely Facebook will favor your ad with a good CTR already.

Facebook delivers your CPC ads to higher quality inventory(people who are more likely to click your ads). That's not to say you can't make CPM campaigns work though.

CPC ads are on higher and more visible positions so that way you get more clicks and fb gets more moolah

CPM ads are usually placed lower because facebook will get the money no matter if someone clicks or not and that is the reason why CPM ads get lower CTR.

I did lot's of CPM ads, but usually I can get much more volume with CPC, and CPC ads can be pretty cheap aswell if your CTR is high .
