Ask Me Anything About Affiliate Marketing v2

Read The First Thread Here: http://www.warriorforum.com/ad-netwo...marketing.html

Alright, it's time for version 2. This is your chance to ask a real affiliate marketer about what he does in his day to day life. For those of you that don't know me, I've been an affiliate marketer for 5+ years and have generated a 7 figure revenue through my years strictly through my affiliate marketing efforts

As a guide, here is a list of things I am confident answering questions about:
  • PPV
  • PoF
  • Display
  • Search Engine Marketing (SEM, NOT SEO!)
  • Emailing
  • Facebook
  • Affiliate Networks and Offers
  • Tracking
  • Landing Pages
  • Paid Traffic

I will not answer questions about SEO because I just don't do any. I do not work with free traffic sources outside of what Google naturally gives me. I don't spend time linking or buying links or anything like that because I just don't have a whole lot of content sites. Please don't ask me about SEO or free traffic sources because I don't have any real knowledge to pass on.

Please read through all posts before posting your question, chances are your question might already be answered.

    Justin,

Have you ever tried advertise.com? I was thinking about setting up a campaign on there and testing.

Pay per click adcenter questions. Learning slowly but surely.

My CTR and quality score is very good. 9/10 93 clicks 3,277 Impressions Zero Sales. 2.81 CTR. $38.00 spent

My Keywords, ad copy and landing page are all congruent with each other.

It's a fat burner product. 122 keywords all "fat burner" related. Long tailed KW's 3 to 5 words long. Phrase and Exact match.

So it's either the Landing page and/or the offer.

Should I try weight loss "Free Trial" offers? Will they convert better?

I feel like I'm so close but yet far away.

I feel like I've used an old version of advertise, but I can't be certain. Currently, I don't use this traffic source. They certainly look professionally done. Reviews are up and down, but I'd give them a shot if you are looking for a G/Y/B alternative to search traffic as it looks like that is what they're best at.

Free trials as in continuity/rebill offers? These are really sketchy. Depending on your location, you will want to have a lawyer look at your landing page if you start doing any volume. Then you have the approval team at Adcenter to deal with. I'm not sure if they'll allow rebills or not these days. I used to do quite well with them there before all the govt. lawsuits and what not, but that was a few years ago.

You def. want to split test landing pages and offers no matter what you do. The key to a successful campaign is constant split testing.

Number 1, get your targeting right. Set a low login count and bid higher.

If you have broad targeting, and plan to keep it that way, they only real way you're going to get clicks is by testing thousands of different ads. Try testing 100 new images a day, then take your highest CTR images and test with 10 different ad copies. It'll be expensive, but that's the kind of game it is these days.

Finally, you can always run tightly targetted large banner ads. This requires $1000 charged to your account, but these are really where some of the bigger spenders make their money.

        Hi Justin.

Is it OK to create your own banner ads for CPA offers instead of using theirs?

        Thanks.

For most offers this is absolutely fine. Some offers may specify you may only use advertiser/network approved banners. In this case, you will want to send your banners to your affiliate manager before advertising with them. Usually its the ad copy they want to sign off on, but for things like dating, they may want to make sure the images are OK, too. Too sexy for some offers, take eHarmony for example, won't be approved.

So to answer your question, yes this is fine, but play it safe and talk to your affiliate manager before you attempt advertising anything.

Got any tips for getting Facebook to significantly lower your CPC?

I've seen other affiliates get .10 cent clicks and even less on FB for targeted US traffic.

So far with CTRs between .1 to .3% the lowest I've been able to get my clicks is $0.30. Any advice?

Should I use any scripts or pictures. The problem that I don't have any big fan pages where to start.
If you could give any good advice regarding viral traffic in FB that would be great.

How do you target 40 yo men with dating offer? What kind of angles work best?

I can't figure this out. I do pretty well targeting older women but I can't for the life of me get a profitable campaign targeting older men. Most ads get around a 0.05% CTR and I've tested over 100 images.

I've tried cute young women in their twenties with tons of cleavage of varying skin tone/hair color.

I've tried good looking 40 yo women with tons of cleavage of varying skin tone/hair color.

    I've tried plain Janes.

Maybe I should try old grannies next?

    Pof question:

My ctr tends to drop real quick from 0.19-0.26 ranges to 0.07- 0.035 ranges in a matter of hours. is there a specific way I should be bidding thats hurting my ctr? My bids are around the 0.20. I get plenty of impressions but the ctr drops a lot and I dont think my banners and copywriting skills are that poor.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? Bids too low? Targeting? Overestimating that my ad copy is solid? Ive had success on orher traffic sources with 0.8ish ctr.. Nothing close on pof.

Every traffic source I run on, I usually have to use a landing page of some sort to maximize my conversions. There is no best way. Just make sure the message between your ad and landing page stays fairly consistent. If you are using two very different ad copies or angles, make sure you are using different landing pages for each ad copy.

For single digit CPCs, you'll need a CTR of around .5 - .8+. I know I can get clicks for less than a cent in most countries with a CTR of 1%+, but that is more or less of a fluke than a well thought out ad. It isn't very common that that will happen. You'll test out thousands of ads before you get a handful of good ads, so just stick with it.

Again, this is getting into free traffic which I said I would not be able to answer because I have very little experience with it.

The only time I've kind of went viral was because I had a Thai celebrity friend of mine share one of my videos where I was speaking Thai, so if you have any friends in high places, that is an instant score. You could possibly offer to pay them if you aren't friends with them.

But like I said, I won't be covering free traffic because I just don't do it.

Over 100 images? 101 images? I test around 50+ new images per day, and I usually only pick up a few good images that do well each week. You aren't testing enough.

Have you done some research into what 40+ year olds are doing on a dating site? Look into psychology of a 40 year old single male getting into online dating. Google is your friend.

Images aren't the only important thing. Have you split test 20+ different ad copies yet?

Test, test, test. You're not gonna make a quick buck with $100 and 100 ads, unfortunately. This is why I recommend most people to have $2000+ just to test as a new affiliate.

Bids are too low. You're going to be pinging the same leftover traffic over and over again. Set login count lower and session depth lower. Increase your bids.

I can't really comment on anything else there, but CTRs on PoF do tend to drop quick for anyone. Having a fair amount of ads to rotate through every other day or so solves this problem.

    Thanks for your insight, justin.

So could increasing my bids get me higher ctrs? Im trying to figure out the way the traffic works since it deels the traffic im getting is not that quality although volume is high.

I will experiment with higher bids and see if I can get some improvements.

    Thanks.

With higher bids, you'll get higher quality traffic. It'll be older traffic, where conversions are better for the advertisers backend. As an example, when I set up a broad US campaign with no age targeting, most of my clicks are from 18 - 25 year olds when I bid at 20 cents. With lower bids you're only bidding for clicks that no one else really wants, and doesn't want because it just doesn't work out in the long run. I usually see increased CTRs with higher bids as well.

I am also curious ... do you constantly fluctuate your bidding on POF with your campaigns? Or do you find a sweet spot and leave it sit there for like a week? Or is bidding something that you change every day?

Also, have you had any success promoting anything other than dating offers on POF?

I hear from some people around here that you shouldn't limit yourself to promoting JUST dating on POF.

I notice a lot of people running the same ads for weeks at a time promoting non dating offers, so I suppose it must be profitable ...however I am curious if YOU have had any success doing so?

Look online for affiliate marketing forums where you can discuss ideas, learn new strategies and share tips. This guarantees you to make a sale and earn even if you are not the one doing the promotions. Hiring people for sales positions within your local business can be costly and sometime ineffective.

Bidding will change on a day to day basis, even hour to hour (at night, many competitors might pause their campaigns so you can lower bids and still keep impressions up).

Testing and tracking is what its all about. Take notes on how changing your bid changes things like CTR and impressions.

I tend to bid around 50 cents to $1 when testing. Note all demographics will have a different sweet spot. Full banner ads require 2-3 times higher bids to compete over the small ads.

See the above for bidding info.

And yes, plenty of success in other niches. Anything you can target demographically will work. Biz op, gaming, health, etc.

Flikr is an okay place to start. I won't post details on my secret image collection sources, though. It's not too hard to google for gallery sites with tons of images.

At least 8 hours, sometimes up to 36-48 hours on the off chance that I want to catch up and really burn out a campaign or I get hooked on something. I enjoy this though, so I look at it more as a hobby than "work" or a job. A good day I'll do an average of 12 hours, sometimes more, sometimes less. This allows me to take off time when I need it, though. So if I ever have to fly out or have an emergency or need to meet friends in the middle of the day, I can do it knowing that I am still way ahead of my work curve.

That's a very basic targeting method and a sure fire way to find tons of competition. Think demographically. Who would need that gift card and what sites could you find them at?

Here's a little motivation I posted on my Facebook the other day:

Everyone I know that has money worked their butts off to get there. We didn't sit on our butt and cry like a baby when things didn't go our way, we got back to biz and pushed for more ways to make it work! We weren't told how to make a hundred bucks a day, we did tons of trial and error, and scaled things that did work, spending sleepless nights slaving away to secure our future. We never complained about a lack of funds or lack of available positions at local jobs, we made ourselves desirable or raised our own funds through freelancing, taking any job available (minimum wage is better than no wage!), holding garage sales or hunting for people that needed services done in the area.

F* the haters that don't understand that being successful isn't just about how much money you have in your bank account (Haha, money in the bank. That's a classic one. We make our money work for us 24/7 invested in things that give us better returns!). Being successful is a lifestyle choice and mindset that we strive to maintain all day, all night, everyday!
