Everyone seems to like these types of threads so I thought we could do one about PPV. I think you guys know I've done a fair bit of PPV marketing

Feel free to post any questions about PPV traffic sources, offers, landing pages, target selection, or anything else and I'll do my best to answer them!

    1) What's the difference between someone who makes $10 a day vs $100 a day vs $1000 a day vs $10,000 a day in profit? Skillset and mindset wise.

    2) what are some functions of prosper202 that people usually aren't aware of' but which are important to know towards success? (e.g., day parting)

    3) how do you label/name your campaigns on prosper and leadimpact?

    Thanks

It definitely depends on the niche. For dating, I can get somewhere around 20% (actually, I can get higher but then quality suffers). For other niches 5-10% might be good. CTR is really just one part of the equation though and people focus on on it too much.

Lead Impact & Traffic Vance are what I generally recommend. Depending on the niche, there are specific places that can work well.

No, I use others but hesitate to publicly name them because 1) They took a long time to find and 2) They're much more sensitive to competition than the known sources. There are actually a lot of pop traffic sources to test out there, you just have to do some searching and lots of testing.

$10-$100/day almost anyone can hit (at least for a few days) when they stumble on a good campaign. The difference between those affiliates and the ones that do over $1k/day is this - The $1k/day affiliate isn't worrying about every little thing. They aren't trying to make every LP perfect, they aren't spending time split testing the font color in their headlines, etc. They're really just building, and building, and building campaigns.

You would be very un-impressed if you looked over the shoulder of someone making $x,xxx/day on PPV. From what I've seen (I've coached somewhere over 5,000 affiliates) this is the single biggest thing (mentally anyway) that holds people back. They keep thinking there's some new thing they need to learn, some new forum they need to join, some new coach they need to hire, etc. Ironically, these affiliates are usually very smart, but they use logic against themselves by thinking "Ok, I'm smart..if I can just figure out this one piece to the puzzle..'. While they're doing that, other affiliates are just focused on building campaigns and learning from their mistakes.

          2) Hmm..I don't really use anything special. This is a good example of what I was saying above

          3) I usually just name them with the campaign, country, and anything else I need to identify it. Any way that makes sense to you is fine really.

$xx,xxx. These days though, I'm really more interested in building campaigns I don't have to babysit. I would much rather build a campaign that makes $500/day that I never touch vs a campaign that makes $1k/day I'm constantly tweaking bids, switching offers, etc. By building campaigns I don't have to babysit, I can make way more and my income is more stable.

So many people are focused just on sending traffic straight to offers. That's still a good strategy, and something I do myself, but it should just be a part of your overall strategy.

I think I started getting into PPV seriously sometime in 2008. I've been an affiliate for about 11-12 years now in total though

            - What type of campaigns make the bulk of your revenue? Meaning, do you have lots of small campaigns generating lowish revenue that adds up or a few big campaigns generating xxxx a day?

            - Are you running any campaigns that target by demographics and not in any way related to the offer? If so, what was your most successful demographic campaign? (in terms of revenue a day)

Oops, sorry I missed this one. Demographics are tricky. Just because some tool tells you a site is primarily Women 30-35 , etc. doesn't mean it's the majority of users on that site, just the most concentrated. I do have campaigns built off demographic targeting, but almost all of them got them from starting off targeting related to the offer.

I couldn't agree with you more here. If only aspiring PPV marketers knew that they themselves are their best coach, they would simply get out there and start creating campaigns.

There's some great tools and resources available for PPV marketers including your very own Aff Playbook, but ultimately, people just need to get out there, start learning from their mistakes and stop over-thinking things

Once u start to see profits coming in by 200% of your investment. For example if you invest 50 dollars and you get back 150. U know this campaign is profiting so it's time to increase the advertising cost and monitor the results. Optimize when necessary but i guess it will last for quite a while before it starts to lose money.

      2) For one of my campaigns, 5 of my conversions (which is all of my conversions so far) occurred during 11am to 12pm. For that campaign it had 1002 impressions and an ad spend of $15.03. Should I only focus on my leadimpact traffic on the time between 11am to 12pm. From your experience, has focusing traffic on a time period which brings most of your conversions borne fruit for you?

If you don't mind me ask, do you have any tricks to increase conversion? (like Greedy's toggle full screen javascript (which doesn't work most of the time now as I see, IE blocks it)).

I'm playing around with LI. Made only 1 campaign so far because I have to generate 500 leads to be able to promote better offers in my network. It have a positive ROI but I can't scale it so I make 4-12 leads only a day. I'm also creating a campaign for a high payout (~$95) CPA offer now.

I've always had a larger number of 'smaller' ($50-$1k/day) campaigns running than a few big one. I've had big campaigns making up the bulk of my income before, but they always die at some point and you're back to square one. When you first start out, it's really tempting and exciting to chase that money right in front of you but after a while you get sick of the ups and downs. Once I learned how to take a campaign as far as it could efficiently (not max $/day) go, my income went up a lot.

Originally Posted by ChrisBa View Post

Depends how you define campaign? I've had what most would consider a 'campaign' that ran for over a year and a half but during that time I switched out offers, tested new LP's, added new targets, and got rid of old ones, etc.

No, I would probably recommend testing outside of the US asap. The US is the most saturated market for sure.

Before you can even consider day parting (only running your campaign at certain hours) you should have at least 2 weeks of data, and a minimum $200 spend. There is no way you can know what days/times would work from 5 conversions. You really have to see how a campaign performs over a long period of time before you can make any assumptions. If you converted great on Monday for example, then bad the next Monday which one was representative of a typical Monday? You see what I'm getting at here. Sometimes no clear pattern emerges.

Sometimes I do dayparting, but only after a good deal of time and money.

The best luck I've had with gaming on PPV was promoting multiple offers at the same time. It's tough to be profitable on the payout of 1 gaming offer, so I always go for multiple conversions per visitor.

What network is that? I know plenty of networks that will let you promote good offers from day 1. Let me know if you need some recommendations.

My best 'trick' to increase conversions for you is to build more campaigns. You've build 1 so far and working on another. which is good. Put your head down and build your first 10 campaigns as quickly as you can. That will get you MUCH further along than anything else.

Yep. See, people can avoid failure by not taking action. Sounds weird right? But, if they keep reading, researching, checking out tools, etc. they can blame their lack of progress on 'getting ready to take action'. If they build campaigns and fail, they think they've actually failed.

I've never used Demon Tracker. Prosper & CPV Lab are great. CPV Lab is a little easier with rotation, but I like the reporting of Prosper better.

Weight loss is a competitive niche for sure. I like to use some kind of engagement calculator (like a BMI calculator) where the visitor has to enter their email to see the results. For PPV, I've had the best luck in the weight loss niche with Traffic Vance.

      1. I use Prosper more because of the reporting
      2. It depends on the offer payout. I suggest at LEAST $25-$50 before changing anything. That doesn't mean you'll know if a campaign will work or not, it's just the bare minimum to run before making a change.
      3. I go by spend here. It doesn't matter how many impressions I get if I'm paying so much for them that I'll never be profitable. For the sake of simplicity, stick with the $25 amount.
      4. I typically start out testing a landing page vs direct link. Depending on the outcome (LP almost always wins), I'll then split test 2 completely different landing pages. By completely different, I don't mean a different headline..I mean a completely different layout, pics, etc. Once I see the winner there, I'll have a better idea what style of LP is going to work and I can start testing smaller elements like headlines. To be honest, I don't test a lot of smaller details.
      5. I usually don't unless I've ran a campaign for a long time and can definitively identify patterns. I wrote more about this a couple posts up.
      6. I get targets from organic and paid search results, other offers, etc. I try to stick with relevant targets until I get something profitable.

From your previous posts, it appears you recommend international offers than US, what networks do you suggest (please name a few).
Do you use a specific service or just google translate to create the specific (non English) text for the landing page?
You also appreciate direct linking (50/50). In your experience, doesn't the popup window size affect the conversions?
I have already tried Lead Impact (and Bing - spent thousands), for many US offers, any idea what type of offers work best for PPV international? Because you advice keep on building campaigns but need to focus on just one niche/market at the beginning!

Lead Impact is GREAT for loans yes!

PPV is good for list building, but you'll have to spend some money before the list will pay off. It's an investment, and not something you'll get immediate return from. Depending on many factors, expect to need 500+ subscribers before you start seeing consistent conversions from the list. If you're just starting out, I would promote offers without collecting emails.

What you're asking about is direct linking. It can work yes, but most of the time I do better with a very simple landing page.

Lead Impact is probably the best overall that people can easily join.

If I translate my LP, I use onehourtranslation.com. Based on my tests, sometimes English will outperform the native language though. You have to be very careful of local dialogue too. What means one thing here, might have no meaning or mean something entirely different in another part of the world.

I often start a campaign split testing a direct link and landing page (more often than not, I just start out with a landing page).

In your experience, doesn't the popup window size affect the conversions?

This is a good question I want to highlight. I'm not sure where the idea that we have to fit our creative 100% in the viewable area. I guess it's one of those tips that makes logical sense so people just keep saying it. I have lots of actual data showing this is not true. As long as the visitor can see most of your page, or even just something interesting, they will scroll. I've been meaning to dig up all my data and do a blog post about this. So, I really don't make an effort to create my LP as a specific size.

Dating is a good one to test intl on LI because there are lots of offers available in different countries.

This is a great post, thank you for sharing valuable insights. I just started with PPV and currently have one campaign running with TraffiVance. I have over 1,300 impressions so far from main 5 targeted URLs.

I used about 500 URLs as target but most of traffic came for top 5 URLs. I had done research on the offer, it was a high EPC offer with good demand. I spent about $20 and no conversion. It's a short form submit offer for a FREE trial, (offer payout is $28). One of the URLs has over 500 impressions but no conversion. I am quite bum but I know it's only the first day. I have a few questions:

      1. What is the recommend impression/conversion ratio on a targeted URL or KW before you get rid of the target?

      2. How many 1st positions should you have at any given point so you're not breaking the bank fast? Well initially

      3. What are some of your top suggestions to optimize your campaign? How frequent should you be optimizing your campaign the first week? 1-3 times/day? I know it varies on the campaign but just generally speaking. I was suggested 2-3 times/day your first few days.

Thank you in advance for your help

It depends on if potential customers of that offer would visit English language URL's. If they would, then yes go for it.

      -Stella-
      1. I base it on spend. Depending on my overall campaign spend, I'll spend at least 1-2x the offer payout before deciding anything.

      2. I just start off with a low bid, and raise it as needed to get traffic.

      3. I would spent at least $25 before doing anything. I normally don't touch my campaigns a lot while they're collecting data.

It's not always a good idea to do that. Usually the payment terms are worse (slower) and the payout might be lower. After you do some good volume, you could investigate and see if it's even a possibility.

      2. Usually identify yourself by showing where you ran the offer, how much volume you did, etc. Just tell them you would like to speak to them about running the offer direct through them.

      3. It works well. About the same overall between TV vs LI.

      4. Auto insurance is a really tough niche. I would say it's about the same.

        Hi David,

Thanks for taking the time to answer everyone's questions on PPV marketing!

I've noticed that when I first launch a campaign, I'll see a certain level of conversions and/or clickthroughs, and then it will drop a bit over the following days (assuming I don't make any changes.)

Is this something you typically see? If so, how long does it usually take for things to stabilize and how do you go about analyzing the data if there's an initial spike in CTRs and CRS?

How do you deal with PPV leaches? I am only doing a test campaign, to iron the wrinkles and I already can see that all the competitors, about 5-6 of them, are bidding on the URL of my pop-up window.

Practically, if I pay top bid to be displayed first, they only have to bid the lowest bid and their pop-up window will cover mine. Real PITA. I think PPV network should take care of this, otherwise what is a point of paying for a top bid.

One can't see this unless he has LI's toolbox installed in his/her browser. I've set up virtual PC, using Oracle's VritualBox, and than inside virtual PC I have Internet Explorer 8 with LI's toolbar. Normal browser and one with pop-up toolbar behave very differently.

It is quite hard to find this toolbar, but I managed to get mine from Greedy's site. As well, LI changes other behavior of your web page, so definitely it is must to have it installed.

Yes, that's very typical. You need to look at your data over a couple weeks and at least several hundred spend before you get an idea of average conversion rates.

There's some stuff you can do like regularly switching tracking domains, LP domains, etc. That's probably the best way (although its not a 'solution') to stop people from bidding on your tracking/lp domain.

There's really no way to determine how long a campaign will last. It also depends what you mean by 'campaign' - I have stuff that lasts for a long time but through many offer/lp/target changes so it's really not the same campaign I started with.

      1. By incorporating more long term strategies like collecting emails, and also by coming up with unique ways to promote niches instead of going head to head with other affiliates.

      2. Don't use Wordpress for PPV landing pages. You really just need a very simple page. You should be using CPV Lab or Prosper 202 to track anyway, so that's how you would split test. Here's a great post for doing this with Prosper Split Testing and Landing Page Rotation Script for PPV | CTRtard

      3. It's really not about the niches, it's about the way you promote them. Nothing is really on 'auto pilot' though. I still have to check bids, etc, but I try to build campaigns that I don't have to sit and watch all day.

      4. It's one of a few traffic sources I use. I do some 'media buying', yes.

      5. Hmm...I would say a good 3-6 months before I had a decent idea what I was doing. I had already been doing affiliate marketing for a while, so it cut my learning curve down a bit.

      6. Not really, no. No one traffic source is easier/better IMHO. I like PPV for beginners because you can use simple landing pages, there aren't a lot of restrictions (like on AdWords), many niches can work, and it can be very profitable if done right.

No, I don't really bother with demographics because it's impossible to nail down correctly for PPV. I start out by going for directly relevant urls. I do check each target I scrape to make sure it's relevant to my offer. For example, if I was promoting a car insurance offer I would start of bidding only on other car insurance sites/offers.

What is best way to track conversions on TrafficVance. I have prosper202, using the postback url feature and place that with the CPA network offers. When I run the campaign, I see the clicks but it does not tell me which keyword/URL target the clicks and conversion are coming from. Or perhaps I'm missing something on prosper202? Sounds like you're not getting the keyword/URL targets to track correctly. All you need to do for that is add the tag "{keyword}" to the end of the tracking link you create on step 7.

As for callback URL conversion tracking, I explain it in this thread here.

Not really. Usually when a network shows you an EPC, it takes all traffic sources into account which makes it not very accurate. Your AM should be able to tell you the EPC of an offer for a specific traffic type though.

For hosting you need a realiable VPS. I use and recommend Beyond Hosting | Managed Linux Virtual Private Server Hosting

How much is needed to do this successfully isn't an easy question to answer. I've seen people do well with their first $500, and others spend thousands and still not succeed. It's really dependent on the person.

I do, but I certainly don't want to make it sound like you just build a campaign and kick back Campaigns like this are great, but most people don't have the patience to build and scale them. It takes more initial investment in terms of time and money, but pays off nicely.

IMO a landing page is more important with ppv. When your link pops up, it is typically limited to a certain dimension (eg 800x600, 750x550, etc). You want your lp/offer typically to be optimized for this to ensure the visitor is seeing everything

Interesting thread, thanks for sharing it all.

Was curious about the landing page concept, can you recommend some free or paid templates that convert well (design-wise).

Do you write the sales letters yourself or do you outsource it? In case of outsourcing, how much do you pay for them? Or do you just use the landing page that the vendor is offering?

Last question, do you think a banner campaign would work for a monthly SEO service? I tried quiet a few things and it seemed like a total waste of money, although I don't properly keep track of things so it might've helped.
