How Facebook's fake likes cost charities thousands

Sum up; A charity buys $10k worth of ads via facebook and gets 500k likes to his fan page. He posts on his wall to try to get his "targeted" fans to download a software he has developed but soon finds out a BIG chunk of the fans are from fake accounts.

My conclusion; Facebook does NOT have a revenue share program (as far as I know) like adwords/adsense, so any clicks that are made by fake accounts are not generated by publishers that want to increase their "adsense" rev...right?

So that mean's the fake accounts are made by FB and their team because they are the only ones making any money out of the clicks. They can not say someone is sitting there creating fake accounts and using those fake accounts to click on ads - what would be the purpose of that? No... the only logic is that FB is scamming.

I would say, that it is not the FB that is clicking on its own ads. Owners of fake accounts are not real people and ghosts will not click on ads either.

I am just guessing, now you have software that is collecting marketing intelligence about FB ads. In order to collect data they create fake accounts and than they monitor which ads appear on which social category. To make data complete, software virtually clicks on ads. So basically its nothing to do with FB, but one of the developers who is selling marketing data.

There was another story a couple months back :

“A couple months ago, when we were preparing to launch the new Limited Run, we started to experiment with Facebook ads. Unfortunately, while testing their ad system, we noticed some very strange things. Facebook was charging us for clicks, yet we could only verify about 20% of them actually showing up on our site. At first, we thought it was our analytics service. We tried signing up for a handful of other big name companies, and still, we couldn’t verify more than 15-20% of clicks. So we did what any good developers would do. We built our own analytic software. Here’s what we found: on about 80% of the clicks Facebook was charging us for, JavaScript wasn’t on. And if the person clicking the ad doesn’t have JavaScript, it’s very difficult for an analytics service to verify the click.

What’s important here is that in all of our years of experience, only about 1-2% of people coming to us have JavaScript disabled, not 80% like these clicks coming from Facebook. So we did what any good developers would do. We built a page logger. Any time a page was loaded, we’d keep track of it. You know what we found? The 80% of clicks we were paying for were from bots. That’s correct. Bots were loading pages and driving up our advertising costs.”

Some of the clicks can be the spy tools, but it shouldn't be more than 1-2% imo.
