Do You REALLY Need a Landing Page for a free offer?

I'm still new to CPA, and getting ready to launch my first paid ad campaign.
But, I have a question about landing pages.

If the CPA offer you are promoting is something free
(such as a free online MMO game sign up, or an email opt-in), why do you need a landing page?
I've heard that landing pages are used because Facebook viewers aren't in the mood to buy, but if what you're promoting is just a free sign up, do you still need it?

...And, what if the offer is a free trial? If the direct page is already very good, and it promotes a free offer (+$5 shipping charges), do you need the landing page?

...And the final question: What is the advantage of a landing page? Do you have to use it to put the reader in a buying mood and get them all excited? Or, is it just so that you can get their emails and build a list?

Thank you in advance for all tips! I appreciate all replies, and I will respond and be active on this thread.

The advantage of a landing page is exactly the 2 things you listed. You can use it to capture emails, and get them into the buying mood.

Think about it like buying a car, your not going to just buy a car without knowing anything about it. Your obviously going to want to see everything about it and why its better than what you have now before you buy it.

Most newbies sees landing pages as an "extra step" between the conversion and the visitor, when in actuality a well built landing page will always increase conversion rates. Your landing page "pre-sells" to the visitor and gets them in the right mindset to convert.

Check out this case study - it takes a profitable CPA campaign utilizing a landing page, then it removes the landing page to see what would happen. affbeast.com/do-landing-pages-really-increase-conversion-rates/

Here's another study that shows that once a visitor completes a simple commitment, then they're more likely to complete an even larger commitment. The "click" from your LP to the offer's page can act like this "foot-in-the-door" technique.

      Hope this helps. Good luck.

It is almost always better to use a landing page, Having a good landing page related to offer versus direct linking has many times been the difference between a successful campaign and an unsuccessful campaign

Ok, I understand that a landing page will be of great use with a paid offer. What exactly is the landing page, though? Is it basically a page listing all of the "great features" of the following product, and then they enter there email and click "get access?" Or, is it basically a blog-post-type page that acts like a review that talks about how great the product is. I'm not exactly sure. Or, is it a video that lists all the great thinks about the product? Does it vary between these? Do I have the right idea?

Also, you answered the question of if it's really necessary for a PAID offer, but my biggest question is, so that nobody misses it:
Is a landing page necessary with a free offer?
Such as an email opt-in, or a MMO free sign-up where they just enter their name and email to get access? I ask this because you don't have to get the viewer in a buying mood, because they aren't buying anything.

      Thank you!

Yes, a landing page can increase the conversion rate on a free sign up offer.

When I say "pre-sell" I don't necessarily mean that you're actually selling anything - you want to get the viewer in the "signing-up" mood.

A landing page is a very powerful tool because it lets you put your own marketing "spin" on a particular offer.

So let's use the "MMO free sign-up" offer you keep talking about as an example. Now, lets say we want to promote the game "WIZARD101" which pays for every sign up at around $1-$2.

We can choose to target people who are interested in "Harry Potter" and then we can build a landing page around that angle or premise. So in the landing page, we can say something like "Do you want to be a wizard like Harry Potter? Sign up for this game and become a wizard!"

Again, this is a very powerful tool and can make you a whole lotta money. Trust me.

Let me know if that was confusing lol.

IMO a landing page is an avenue to express yourself to your lead and tell them exactly what your offer is (doesn't matter whether free or paid). Put yourself into your customers mind and explain to them why it is important for them to take the step you want them too.

A landing page basically could be all you have listed, ie a blog post with a review, a video, etc so long as it does have an explicit call to action, either a button to the next step or an email submit.

      Ok, thank you!
Now to build this landing page, I'm thinking I'll use Optimize Press for Wordpress. Or, would a pack of 880 landing page templates from Fiverr for $5 be better?
I already have hosting for unlimited sites, and I can get a domain for $0.99.

Do I need to have hosting and a domain for this?
How is the hosting/domain issue typically handles with landing pages?

The domain name doesn't really matter if your using paid traffic. Obviously if your domain name is something like healthinfo.com and your promoting gaming related stuff, it might be a little suspicious. But if you are just doing things like FB ads and directing them to your LP, your domain name shouldn't have much of an effect on it.

You don't need a landing page but you should always try them and test. Building a list is another great reason to try a landing page
