For Everyone Not Having Success with POF

Hello all,

Reading a lot of threads about people having trouble with POF. I don't have a ton of great things that are going to make your business explode but I do have a very simple trick that some people don't know, and instead of posting it to the 4-5 threads I've seen about POF I'm just going to make my own thread about it.

POF has a very unique advertising platform, and their targeting is great! BUT, a lot of people waste their impressions in some really unresponsive areas. So, if you haven't already, I'd strongly recommend using the "Session Depth" targeting option in your POF campaigns. Session depth in short is how many pages the person must visit / go through in order for your ad to start displaying.

Why this is important is that when *most* of these people log onto the website they have a purpose in mind. They're going to check their friends' page or they're going to check their messages, write someone a message, etc. With a goal in mind, they're MUCH less likely to be looking at ads. I use Session Depth of at least 3. This is just my 2 cents as this took one of my campaigns from .05% CTR to .112% CTR so it can really help.

Another thing I'd urge you guys to make use of is the "ads clicked" tool. You can target by 0-4 ads clicked, which is a great choice because you're making your ad stand out and allowing it to be one of the first few that this person clicks. This puts forth the assumption that they're actually genuinely interested in what your ad is promoting and they're willing to take action.

While 0-4 ads clicked is a good targeting option, so is the 5-19 option. Yes you might get more people clicking and much less conversions, but you also know that these people are active with the advertisements and they might be less interested or have a lower conversion rate but there's always a sale / lead somewhere. I recommend running a separate campaign for these clicks.

That's just my two cents, hope this helps you guys!

  • Yay! Finally someone who knows their stuff!
  • Wow! Nice post man. I will definitely try this on my campaigns!
  • Glad to help!

Another thing I'd recommend doing is googling "POF interests by demographic".
They have a great free tool that you can use to start setting up your campaigns and getting a good idea of who your target market is. I'd be careful though as you don't want to pick EVERY demographic as a criteria for your targeting but this can also be a huge help in your POF campaigns.

^^ This is just an fyi, most people know about it
  • Awesome, I was about to start POF campaign.
    Thank You For Advice.
  • No problem! Just be careful with the interests by demographic tool..

what i mean by this is you cant just look at the percentages and say age group 41-54 has a high interest in my niche... and social drinkers also have a high interest in my product. You can't automatically target social drinkers age 41-54 because those social drinkers listed on the interests by demographic tool may not fit your age group, and so on and so forth. Hopefully that makes sense
  • Great advice! This should definitely help some people.
  • bump for a great post!
  • Awesome tip. With this in mind I still recommend testing different values for this field on each campaign to find what will work best for that specific campaign.

    • Always always always recommended

      Glad everyone liked the post
  • In my mind I am wanting to get back into POF but I have been hearing alot that it is not as profitable anymore. Is that at all true?

    • Not true at all. It's still a traffic source. Whether your campaign will succeed or not depends on you.

  • Great tips!

  • Few more question.
Is it possible to see what ads my competitors are running other than creating a fake pof user account?

What is a good CTR for online dating niche ads on pof?

I just saw a screen shot of POF ad where ad text had {state:US} i suppose its a variable that will change based on user's state. Where can i read about how this works?

Is Frequency Cap per campaign or per creative?
  • Session depth criteria is an excellent piece of information :-)

My feedback is that there is now a lot more competition on POF since facebook has banned dating.

But they are other areas to explore ;-)
  • this is a mommy thread
but yes POF is good and the session depth function is very effective
  • Just starting in this game but this is a very useful tip.

Particularly interested in the ads clicked metric, my thinking would be that the 5-19 click would perform better given that the consumer is used to ads and is clearly looking for something, if you can match that need then it's good times. Although they could just be time wasters of course.

Thanks again for the info, look forward to exploring it for myself.
