Justin, that was a well written thread. I just typed a lengthy reply to it actually.

The reason the thread likely was closed was likely do to the "Ask Me Anything" part. Because the mods don't allow "follow along" threads or open ended posts.

okay, i'll go first. i've been using ppv for about three months and have not been profitable. i get conversions, but it seems like i'm not getting enough to stay in the black. i'm doing biz ops in the u.s. and i initially start with about 10 URLs and 20 keywords and phrases. my last offer, i deactivated all but two phrases since none of the other keywords or URLs were converting. so i would get hundreds of impressions, with only about 3% clicking on the CTA button on my LP. After that, my conversion ratio would be about 11% on the CPA network.

i just need a better system of finding keywords, phrases and URLs. i know it's all about testing. but is there anything else i'm missing here? when you say you use LI for international offers, are you saying that US offers aren't as effective for LI?

A friend who sells gym equipment on a Magento site (nets about $10k/mo in sales) is interesting in doing PPV. Do you think it would be profitable for him? If so what exactly would you do (long-tail keywords with an LP for each)? I told him running a national campaign on LeadImpact is a significantly cheaper route than Adwords etc and could potentially be much more profitable. Do you think that's true? What advise would you give him?

We all know Trafficvance gets its installs from games, but what sorts of things does Leadimpact get its installs from?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm interested in knowing if Trafficvance might be a better traffic source for reaching a male demographic, whereas Leadimpact might be better for a female demographic?

I think it was the guide part actually. They don't like articles here is what I read on another post. Afraid it could be copied from another site or used to take advantage of other members. I'm not sure. It's not my forums so I can't complain. I do wish they were a little more forgiving on informative posts, but I can understand as a lot of the content posted here is just copied garbage.

Unfortunatly I forgot to save the post so it is lost into oblivion.

Thanks for the supportive words. It sucks but it's not my site so I'll let the mods do what they think is right even though my intentions were to provide helpful information. It's not the first time I've had a long guide like that deleted before, so I think they just don't like long posts like that.

If they are converting you must be targeting correctly, but your landing pages could be the issue. How many copy and design variations did you test? That's a big thing. I start with copy variations, maybe go through 5 - 10 big different ad copies then I'll try different designs. Since you've got a decently converting ad copy, start with designs instead. Try and lighten the load my making the landing page lighter/smaller in copy size. If you are running LPs on a USA host, but you are targeting countries in Europe or Asia, that can be a problem, too. Slow load times kill PPV campaigns.

LeadImpact has several different toolbars it gets installs from. ClickPotato, GigglingGames, VooMuu are some examples. I don't have it installed as I'm not one to care to spy directly on competitors. Male traffic on TV does seem to be better, but overall if you are targeting a site that is predominantly male, it should have mostly male traffic on each network.

TV traffic quality seems better in general anyways.

Yeah. While there are scroll bars on the pops, not everyone uses them. It certainly seems to help at the very least.

Man I wish I had read the old thread

Anyways, my question:

In PPV... always target by URLs or..?

For example I was going to sell a natural weight loss supplement so my URL's that I target were going to be my top 10-20 relevant URLs from a google search and then a couple of keywords (i.e. weight loss supplement, natural weight loss supplement, etc.)

Is this an alright approach or is there a better way to be doing keyword research?
Not sure if it helps but I plan on using Lead Impact.

I use both. URLs tend to get more traffic, unless you accidently get the keyword "keyword" stuck in your keyword lists (This sentence needs more keyword).

You've gone very direct with your approach. It's fine, but I'm sure you're seeing tons of competition and high bids. I'd base my targets for weight loss demographically and build an angle around whatever demographics you choose (single moms that want to slim up with little time to do so as an easy example I just came up with off the top of my head).

Start with shorter lead gen offers. They usually pay anywhere from around 2 - 6ish dollars, sometimes more.

So,

I hate to be the guy that asks this question cause I know it's one of the more difficult and annoying questions to answer but I'm going to ask it anyway. ;P

On average, about how many conversions do you see per 1,000 impressions / pop ups?
Because I've seen on this forum people say that 10 is very good and I'd be happy with 1 but I'm hoping for 2-5 per 1,000 impressions.

Sorry I know it's a tough question to answer I'd just like any input you're willing to give

Impossible to answer question because I could be profitable with 1 conversion per 5000 impressions if the offer pays enough and I'm bidding low enough.

I shoot for a 50% ROI minimum on most campaigns I run. If I'm able to spend 1k a day on a campaign with returns of 20%, though, I won't complain about that. Considering that 1k would only make me a couple cents in the bank, any real profit is better than letting that money not work for you.

Damn, I mean, If I could run a campaign like this I would, just have not got the funds to spend 1k daily to make 200 in return

Usually I like to see a 100% ROI because of my tight monthly budget

I'm currently in college and making around 1k/month from IM living with my parents

Do you think I should apply for a loan or something to gain some real leverage on a campaign/campaigns

Credit cards are okay. If you can register a business and get a business debit/credit card, that's a great way to kickstart your business so long as you know you can pay it every month. But affiliate marketing is a big risk. You might accidentally miss a term on an offer, break that rule after spending 10k on it, then you'll never be paid out on it.

Honestly, I avoid any kind of credit/loan where possible. I did dip into my student loan when I started, but it was at the point where I needed the money and had strong relationships with the advertiser and OKs on my LP and ads from my affiliate manager and the advertiser that said my quality was perfect.

1. You'll be limited to how far you can go. I recommend a minimum of $2000 ready for testing. For a good education in any traffic source, you are looking to spend around $50 -100 per day for 2 months. Similar to a course in college, this should be around the point in time where you start understanding and getting it on your own.

2. I've been profitable with both. Start with lead gen campaigns then move on to sales offers if you are confident.

I used AffPortal to scrape URLs and keywords. Google Keyword Tool and Media Planner are free and work great. Quantcast Media Planner is powerful, too. Scrapebox works really well,too.

Email Submit Offers or Freebie offers. They usually pay out 1 - 2$ and are total crap. You can have your own email submit (like Aweber), but if the offer is an email submit offer, don't run it.

I don't understand this. You say in point 2 to start with Lean Gen campaigns. Then in point 4 to avoid run submits. Aren't they the same? or do you mean in point 4 to don't use squeeze pages as your landing? sorry it is not clear to me the way you phrase it!

1. Do generic landing pages do well, where there is no mention of the offer in the landing page and the LP is not similar to offer in looks and we are just trying to grab the attention of the user or LPs with similar color, looks and borders to the offer do better?

So the LI rep told me that the viewable area in the pop is 800x600 and you mentioned somewhere that it's smaller than that. The CPVden popper tool also has LI at 800x600. Why do you say that it's smaller than that?

Take into account toolbars, etc.

If you aren't preselling the offer, what's the point of an LP? I think people are savy enough to not click most pop ups unless what they see interests them. You don't have to design an LP to look like the offer (simple and ugly LPs work best for me), but you need to try and presell it through your copy.

As far as I understand the popup window is 800x600. That includes the border of the window, toolbars, etc. Unless something has changed lately, that is what I know to the best of my knowledge. So long as you keep your CTA and copy above the top 500ish pixels, you should be okay.

We always try to keep our ads in 750x450 it's easier this way to scale to more networks as we have already benchmarks from other networks.

When creating landing page remember as well about browsers that are used by networks you would be suprised what old school engines are used by them

(ex ie 7.0)

Hi after a quick scan through this topic. This ppv and a "the voice" commercial on the background made me wonder if you could let some facts and statistics loose regarding tv ppv.

Like what are the costs of an an average ppv tv commercial, and how much does a tv-show or program net with all deductions from the channel, fee's etc?

Any keyword tool will work. Google's own Advertising tools are fine, or you can do your own research through Google searches.

No idea. I've never done anything with television. We aren't talking about television here either. TV = trafficvance. PPV/CPV = Pop Up Advertising on networks like TrafficVance and LeadImpact

1. Can we use trust symbols such as Mcafee secured and others on our landing pages in leadimpact if we give the disclaimer?

2. Can we use as seen on so and so if on our landing pages of the offer if we have disclaimer at the bottom?

Heres the thing. A disclaimer does not guarantee you won't get hauled into court for defrauding people, providing fake testimonials, marketing a product has features that it doesn't have, etc. If you live in the US/UK, this is especially evident. The FTC puts a big hammer down on the big guys doing stuff like this.

While, realistically, if you aren't making too much money, its unlikely it would ever get tagged and get you in trouble, the threat is always there.

The question on legality of things should be asked to a lawyer. If you are trying to get through loopholes of any advertising regulations or laws, go by what a lawyer tells you is okay.

Just few questions regarding the overall strategy:

1.) With the suggested budget of $2,000 how many different campaigns would you try in the beginning? Or, how much would you allocate to each campaign?

2) Would you focus on a small number of campaigns with big profits or a large number of campaigns with small profits?

3) What bid approach works better: starting high, aiming low or starting low, aiming high. The former one, I guess, burns money faster, but saves time. The latter exactly the opposite.

4) How important is that your pop-up is the first? Can you make money with pop-ups in second or third place.

1. With $2000 you could do some decent testing on 10 - 20 lower payout campaigns, probably more but I'm being modest.

2. I look at it as a time thing. If I have a steady campaign that spends $20 and makes $40 on a daily basis and only takes me 10 minutes a day to manage, I would keep it around. If It took me 2 hours a day to manage, I would throw it away. Neither way is better than the other, you just have to manage your time appropriately.

3. If your 1st place bids are extrodenarily high, go with something more in line with your other targets. I'll usually bid up to 5 cents for new niches/campaigns that I'm confident about. I keep high bid targets in seperate campaigns so I can control spending there better if I want to test them. Typically I bid a little higher, but if your third spot bid is 5 cents and 2nd and 1st are 20 cents, I have no problem going for 3rd place and testing the traffic first.

If you can take the first position and stay profitable, take it. The traffic spread to 2nd - 4th positions is a small fraction of what number 1 gets.

I usually start with only URL. But I wanted to expend my campaigns with keywords but didn't get much conversions so far.

I noticed at lead impact that he sometimes put a * between keywords like

buy*stuff

and other times an + (I just fill in 'buy stuff', no not actually using that one

)

so like

buy+stuff

What's the difference and what's the best to use. Couldn't find anything about it in the FAQ. Also some general advice about keywords? I usually try to find the longtail buyer keywords and start testing those first.

Yeah, but the weird thing is that LeadImpact chooses himself what to put there.

I just use a space between two words.

buy[space]stuff
buy stuff

and leadimpact just uses * of +. Just can't figure out why, and what it means.

I've asked to clarify this question up with a rep, but as I believe, bidding on a base domain will give you traffic domain wide. I could be wrong, but I'll update you when the rep answers.

a). A profitable conversion rate. It's hard to give you an exact answer. I've had profitable campaigns at 1% CVRs, so the best way to go about it is to shoot for the ROI you're looking for. It depends on niche and how much you are bidding for on targets. Shoot for 5% if you really want a number, but again, too many factors at play. One target could convert at 20%, another at 2%, but both still be profitable.

b). I start with around 100 - 500 targets. I would stay around 50 - 100 medium traffic targets if you're new at this. Some super niche campaigns I build with keyword phrases end up with 10s of thousands of targets, some which only get a few hits per year, but convert extremely well.

Yes it is ROI, I realize that now.

To get traffic, do you bid on root URLs or inner pages (http://mysite.com/cat1/ etc) or both, and do you truncate URLs to 40 characters ?

Moreover, you mentioned thousands of targets, so do you scrape them using software?

I am doing this manually this way. Is it correct for beginner?
Use Google's new keyword tool to get related keywords. Use these to search theough google.com results and manually collect urls.
Same thing I do with Bing, using Bingads keyword suggest and Bing search.

Where else can we scrape URLs? Any suggestions ?

A. Anything profitable. I aim my campaigns for 50% profitability. I look at it like that rather than conversion rates because they are largely irrelevant. If you aint making money at 100% CVR, would you keep running the campaign?

B. I usually start with around 500 to get some quick data. Any urls that eat up a majority of the traffic get put into a separate lower budget campaign so the other urls have room to breathe and gather clicks. Any targets that don't get conversions or much traffic after a few days get paused.

I saw an webinar (can't remember which one) but they did a case study. He did promote Vistaprint. They did direct linking and one of their targets was the domain vistaprint.com it self. Is this allowed? Can't believe you can 'steal' there own visitors with your popup. Or can we?

Very nice of you to help out members. Anyways, I'm relevantly new and I haven't really made anything decent and quite honestly a bit to nervous to try offers that I'm not completely sure about if it's worth it or not. I started out with dating and kind gave gaming a chance, but nothing worked. All the offers that i tried were recommended by my AM's and they never worked. I have a few friends that are doing very well, and one of them never had any luck with the offers the AM's recommend. He's in Europe so it's kind of hard to get a hold of him. So my question is... what niche do you recommend, where do you look for offers, do you first look at the EPC and look at the offer with the highest one, do you pick offers with smaller payouts or larger payouts? Does direct linking work with the niche you recommend , or is it always better to create landing pages?

Pick a niche that you know or want to know. Learn the problems of that niche and offer a solution. That's how I get most of my campaigns to work.

I'm not going to give you my niches, but I'm in many, many different ones.

EPC is only a guide, but gives no indication to traffic source, whether its all direct linked traffic or some guy got lucky with a high conversion rate on a low CTR landing page. In the end, it gives no insight into how it will perform for you.

The $5 range is typically short leadgen payout range. Nothing that requires a credit card or a phone call, basically. These campaigns are easier to test than their big brothers that require credit card verification (free trials) or full blown sales offers. If you are looking for new campaigns to run, short leadgen offers is what I would look at.

Alright. So according to greedy, she does some research on the topic shes going to promote and obviously finds a bunch of urls and keywords and all that jazz. Just explains that you should look up those urls on alexa and only use ones that are under 20k alexa rating. Do you believe in the same way and why is that?

Alexa ranks nearly any website online, I like to use Alexa in addition to Google.

Google results share the best website for your search, and Alexa ranking are done by traffic volume. So Alexa rankings helps me judge how big a website is in perspective of the internet.

SimilarWeb.com is also very useful, and check out SEOQuake it is a toolbar that lets your sort your Google Search results by Alexa Rank, and a BUNCH of other ranking systems.

Explore them all and see what is suitable for you.

How long does a typical LP last before it is copied & used by others and the LP loses effectiveness ?

Honestly, the news is a better source of info than that. It's made traffic bad for me when trying to get into the city (I live kinda in the outskirts/less busy part of town).

If its a vacation, get out of Bangkok and go to the south or north. Bangkok isn't much of a vacation destination anyways.
