How I made $14,892 from Teespring & Facebook in one week.

Hey guys, a couple weeks ago I didn't even know about Teespring. Now i'm pulling in 5 figures in profit from it.

More and more threads started popping up about Teespring. At first I brushed it off because "how much money could there be in t-shirts?" Well I was wrong. People were posting crazy stats and my jaw dropped. I had to get in on the action... So I did. I'd like give a shoutout to PPC-coach because it was his thread that got me into this.

I hit the ground running - testing shirt designs like I did my ads. Split testing different shirt designs for the best conversion rate before I scaled it up. I was profiting right off the bat. Never lost a single dollar from the start. I think it was because of the nature the demographic I was targeting - they were very responsive.

The best part about this method is that it's very easy to understand the concept so it's very newbie friendly. I hope that those of you guys that haven't made money yet will jump on this guide and actually take some action. I'll lay everything out for you, just do it.

Background Information:

This method takes advantage of the current events.

In the past couple years, there have been over 10 revolutions all in different countries. More people are online now and communication has never been easier. It's getting harder for oppressive governments to stay in power. Facebook is a huge reason as to why these revolutions gained traction. When a revolution breaks out in an oppressed 3rd world country, the government basically puts the media on lockdown and does not allow for TV stations to report on anything that could potentially hurt the current power. So where can the people get all their information from? From other people on Facebook. This happened in Syria, Egypt, and now is happening in Cambodia and in Thailand.

The Cambodian revolution is a HUGE topic on Facebook right now. Take a look at this screenshot:

See that second Facebook page? (I Love Cambodia Hot News II)

There are more people talking about that page than there are likes for it. It's just insane. There's a huge potential for a viral post if you approach it the right way

I'll be focusing on Cambodia and the revolution happening there right now for this campaign guide. I've made close to $14k (all profit) from Cambodia so far in the past 2 weeks and there's more money to be made.

So I'll break this campaign guide into steps and will go over each step in detail.

Keep up with the news.

I'm always up to date with the current news. In this industry, knowledge is power. Knowledge gives you the competitive edge. What you know that the other guy doesn't might be the difference between profiting and not profiting. Check your favorite news website everyday. Just 5 minutes of glancing at the articles in the morning and again at night. If something catches your eye, just read it. This is how I heard about the Cambodian revolution.

Doing proper research.

Don't just read a news article about it, you need to find out the real reason as to why the people are so mad. The best place to do this is to see what the people are saying themselves, on Facebook. Find relevant and hot Facebook pages and read the comments. Look for posts with hundreds of comments. Those are usually the "debate" posts where people argue. Read the arguments and take note of the discussion.

For the Cambodian revolution, the topics that got people riled up the most was "Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Cambodia".

They hate their Prime Minister and are actively protesting to get him out of office. There are a couple reasons as to why they hate him:
  • He is among the richest in Asia. His money comes from corruption from within the government.
  • Cambodia is one of the slowest country to develop due to government corruption. Their neighbors, Thailand and Vietnam are decades ahead of them in terms of development and they resent that.
  • Between 1985 and 1993, he regularly tried to grab the power to keep it to himself. In 1998 he succeeded and became the one and only Prime Minister of Cambodia. And he's been in office since.
  • He is a former communist (Khmer Rouge)

I used these facts as my selling points/angle for my shirt designs - and it worked great.

Creating the shirt

Here's one of the shirts I've made.

This t-shirt got both love and hate, which was a good thing. It sparked conversation, shares, likes, debates, etc. The point is that it got people talking. *Take note at the shared-to-like ratio.

This is not my best converting shirt design, but it had the most shares and comments.

Running it on Facebook Ads

Running it is straightforward. The shirt design will have the most impact on your CTR. I suggest you create 3-4 drastically different shirt designs, then take a look at it's CTR and comments it's getting. Use the comments as feedback and keep it in mind as you're designing your next shirt.

The shirt that I showed you above didn't always look that way.

I didn't spend very much at all. I got the ball rolling with FB Ads, but 90% of the traffic was viral. I put in about $800 total.

It's also important to note that during this campaign, things took a turn for the worst in Cambodia. The governing forces started attacking and killing protesters and the outcry was just insane. Facebook activity jumped up a lot during this period.

Targeting

I targeted those Facebook pages that I showed you above in the screenshot, among other relevant pages. Other than targeting by interest, I kept the targeting pretty simple. I didn't increment age groups (I left it at 18 - No Max) and I didn't split test by location. I didn't even segment the interests into groups. It was just one big giant group for each ad campaign - which is something you usually shouldn't do.

Optimizing

I created 7 different shirts and set the campaign time for each of them at 2 days. At the end of the two days (and about $250 in testing), I could see that two of the shirt designs had a much higher conversion rate than the others.

I wanted to see if I could get a higher conversion rate if I built a little landing page for it, featuring 6 of the shirt designs. Kinda like an e-commerce style page (like this page for example), but it was just a one page and the links lead to teespring. I thought that if they can choose the design they wanted, i'll probably see a higher overall conversion rate. I tested this and found that my conversion rate was lower if I went that route. So I just went back to linking each ad to their respective teespring campaign.

Conclusion

I spent about $800 and made $13,892. That's a huge ROI. I probably put in about 4-5 hours of work total for this campaign.

There you go guys. I basically gave you my campaign. I'm still running this, right now. This isn't some old-rehashed campaign guide that doesn't work anymore, it's actually making me money right now. You can apply the concept of this campaign into so many other things. I hope this can be a call to action for some of you guys who haven't taken action yet. Just do it.

You might ask why I'm releasing a campaign I'm still running - well, there are already a couple copycats who pretty much copied my shirt designs and is promoting it to the same audience that I am. So I figured, what the hell, if its about to get saturated then i'll just unleash the floodgates and ruin it for them too. Oh and this also my gift to you guys . Enjoy and good luck!

I targeted both U.S. and those in Cambodia, but the conversion rate for Cambodia was very low. (Shipping cost was high $10+)

By Sponsered post, you mean a newsfeed ad with a "clicks to website" objective, right?

And isn't that sme kind of copyright issue using that man's pic on your shirts?

In photoshop, save the image as a "GIF" and then a dialog box will come up.

Under "colors", just put in the right amount of color.

Under the "Forced" selection option, choose "None".

Click "OK" and now you're set to use the image in Teespring.

Or you can mess around with the levels until you get the right amount of colors, which is what I did in the images above. It's warmer than the original image, type in "Hun Sen" into Google images to find that image I used.

      Ta-da!

        Vask,

In terms of intellectual property rules, do you own the rights to that image? If not, how are you able to make money off of it and still be legal?

"To do this, courts ask whether the use of the image is for a commercial purpose. An individual’s likeness and image cannot be used to promote a product without consent. For instance, selling a t-shirt that implies the president endorses the product violates his or her publicity rights; this includes selling a t-shirt bearing the president’s image without consent. Yes, all those t-shirts sold on the street with the president’s image are technically illegal. But it is so difficult to enforce this type of publicity right that most public figures don’t bother, especially when the free publicity works in their favor. In contrast, selling a t-shirt with a caricature of the president does not violate that individual’s publicity rights because caricature includes a significant degree of original expression, along with the public figure’s likeness, and this original expression is protected by the First Amendment." -- http://onlineartrights.org/issues/de...-people/basics

A quick question... feel free not to answer if you'd prefer not to.

Anyway, I was studying your payouts aboves there if you divide the amount you made (on each campaign) by the amount of shirts sold you get: $13.14, $11.66, $12.47, $11.87, $11.30, etc. all per shirt. And that's the profit... I'm going to round each shirt to $9 to make (it could me more or less than that)... am I correct in saying that you're charging roughly $20/ shirt?

    Cheers,
    Ben

Came across this thread last night...gotta say I appreciate all the insights into using Teespring and Facebook Ads supplied by the OP and PPC-Coach!

One thing I've seen mentioned but cant' find confirmation on is how to use a tracking pixel on Teespring? Someone mentioned in PPC-Coach's thread that is now 'closed' that it could be done during the campaign setup, but I've gone through setting up a campaign and never saw this option?

Could someone clarify how this is done?

    Thanks!

Yup, there very well could be a copyright issue. You'd have to either try to locate a creative commons photo that lets you alter and use it for commercial purposes, or get permission to use those images. Otherwise, you risk getting sued.

At least, that's my take on how it works. I don't profess to be an expert on this but I do know that you can't just grab other people's pictures.

yes, i test different ad copy, different demography and different design! I was making money on those 2 design from the start but i had other ones that were loosing me money so i had to drop them.
But yes you will see if a design sell pretty much at the start. Once you find something with potential, You have to figure out which demography will buy the most. Than you just cut everybody else and only sell to them!

Did you use 1 simple FB ad and do cpc to get the clicks on FB?

When you use news feed for your ads, don't you need to create a FB page? Also doing this, will it not get you "likes" instead of "website clicks"?

How do you target a specific FB page like you talked about in your post? Because in the interest ad targeting section, not every page shows up.

I use 1 simple account, i do cpc and optimized bid, it depends where im at with the campaing.
You need to create facebook page for newsfeed. it is great because you can build folower for your next campaing in the same niche.

It might be worth considering the Close III, first paragraph of the Facebook Advertising Guidelines ( https://www.facebook.com/ad_guidelines.php ), where it says: "Ads may not contain content that exploits political agendas or "hot button" issues for commercial use."

        The guidelines also say:
Ad text may not assert or imply, directly or indirectly, within the ad content or by targeting, a user's personal characteristics within the following categories:
        ii. religion or philosophical belief;

        Doesn't make sense to me.

        Why?

Because in the ad targeting you can target by religions, you can also target by political groups. So they are saying you can target these groups, but not imply that they are part of a group? LOL

You have to contact teespring support and they'll enable it for all of your campaigns. You have to do this once.

Yes, checkouts when you do the FB ad creation.

Just found out the thread. Well done Vask.

I looked at teespring and checked some history of shirts sold. I found some t-shirts designs, pretty much have same words with slight different designs. Also I checked their offers, lots of them have pretty same words in offer pages.

Just wonder whether these campaigns come from same seller or different sellers? If yes, do you think that is legal to have almost same words in t-shirt designs and offer pages? or someone will report to teespring?

    Comments welcome.

As far as I understand reading Teespring's ToS, they couldn't seem to care less unless the owner of the copyright contacts them with proof of ownership rights and complains. They reserve the right to terminate any campaign they want at whatever time, but that doesn't mean they're about to can you for using an image that is probably copyrighted if there is little chance of them hearing about it or facing legal action themselves.

I think people doing this don't care about TOS or Copyright Infringement , they just have to make shitload of cash. You might question their ethics but in the end it doesn't matter much to them.

Vask, if someone copies your design directly on Teespring, all you have to do is let your Teespring rep know, and they will send all the money from the offending account into your account.

If someone 'sort of' copies you - if it's very clear that they're using your design, with small alterations, you won't get the money from their campaigns, but Teespring will still shut them down, as they look very harshly upon anyone who steals other people's designs. Surprised you didn't try to contact Teespring about this.

      Hello,

Just wondering, have you had a direct experience with this, many of the successful designs on Teespring are direct or almost direct copies of one another. The sports designs are a prime example, such as "This Girl Loves the Broncos" or loves any other team.

Unless one person or company is responsible for all those sports designs..

No, it won't appear ONLY in that group... in fact, you'll get a mix of people and not just the FANPAGE fans, especially if it's a large fanpage. For that, I recommend using OCPM, you might lose money at first, or not, but it'll even out if you've got a tee that people want.

Interesting. I've seen several people say use OCPM. Would you say most sales will come after the 15, 20 USD adspend point as I've had a couple of campaigns where I cut them off before $15 was spent?

Really depends on a lot of variables; Objective, ads, niche, etc.

But for Website Conversions, I usually run up to about $20 per test.

For PPE, I can tell within $5 or $10 whether or not a campaign will "fly".

I wouldn't say that... I'm not a huge fan of PPE... but it has its place and when it works, it works greatly.

I use a combo of CTW, PPE & Conversions.

Website conversion optimization by Facebook starts around 20 to 25 recorded conversions by Facebook. It really starts optimizing around 100 though. Most don't get anywhere near that to even have FB start optimizing unfortunately.

The good part is whether you do WC or PPE, you can and should track your conversions using Facebook's tracking pixel. (You can do reports showing conversion data for any objective).

    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[9273790].message }}

      Interesting.

Well I've not reached that level of sales yet, but once you reach it and it does that- in theory it would mean you'd get conversions earlier/faster for new campaigns? And this would be the case even though for each campaign we're creating unique URLs? because it optimises with teespring as a whole?

I've been setting up the conversion pixels- for some reason, most of them not verifying properly- I've generated it, pulled off the code and placed them into where I'm supposed to in my Teespring dashboard, I'm not sure why this is- or do I need to create the pixel in the main ad platform, verify it then download the data into power editor before verifying it when I setup the ad?

I more confuse on getting target traffic..
    you mention Facebook group page?
so I amuse you use some software to take their Id ?
I do know there is one software that take Facebook id of individual account for FB AD which sold in warrior forum market place.

if you never use ..how you set up?

    thanks

It's about finding the right niche and creating a design for that particular niche. Teespring worked for me.
