The Adwords display url revolution..

Anyone who's as much into researching Adwords to get the absolute best results as me, will know that you can boost your Click Through Rate by split testing the URL for your ad..

Example: you've got a mold problem you want to fix..then an ad that's exactly the same but has Mold-Solutions-Now.com as a Display URL will pull more then the exact same text but with the url "Black-Mold.com" and the mold solutions url has been proven to get 1% better CTR..and you know what that means for keywords that have a 1000+ searches per day..

BUT...I've heard somewhere that Google only allows EXISTING urls to be used. So when you use one that doesn't exist, it violates their TOS. My question is...is that true?

Because what if I want to split test Display Urls but a display url that does not exist in real life proves to be better then the url I currently own..does that mean that I have to buy that domain or subdomain just so I can DO the test without violating the terms of service?

It doesn't make sense to me..

In other words..how do you split test display urls without dropping your relevancy score or so to speak? Does my question make sense there :p

you cant split-test display URLs as you describe, it always needs to be a real URL and it needs to be YOUR domain.

    BUT..you can do this:

    www.yoursite.com/MoldSolution
    moldsolution.yoursite.com
    www.yoursite.com/GetRidofMold

yoursite.com is..well, your actual URL...but you can add stuff to your URL without actually having to change "yoursite.com"

    Hope this helps.

The display url has to be on the same domain, but does not have to be an actual existing url. So what you can do is insert an actionword or keyword in the displayurl.

Like use Yoursite.com/InstantMoldRemoval or something in stead of just Yoursite.com for display url.

edit: sorry GeorgR, looks like we posted at the same time. didnt see your answer earlier.

Aha! I knew it! Thanks a lot guys, this means that I can start improving my ads and improve them fast because I sort of had a hunch that youriste.com should be the same, but that the display url is changeable.

And mrbreeze..I'm still thanking you both!

      Here's another very powerful tip...

Put a call to action in the display URL.

      examples: blackmold.com/FixItNow moldforum.com/JoinNow

Google will not allow general calls in the ad text but it is permitted if it is part of the URL.

      Regards,

      John

Yeah, you can't split test display URLs in one signle adgroup anymore, haven't been able to for a little bit now.

However, you can split test in SEPERATE adgroups.

What you really will need to do is create seperate identical campaigns, use day parting to split test them throughout the day to get relevant test data.

    Good luck!

Wow wow...wait a second there! So what you're saying is that I can't have an ad group rotate two ads where the only difference is the display url? Because I just did that  you're confusing me..

Unless there is some new rule, you can test alternative domains in the same adgroup.

Google has always encouraged advertisers to test different ads and different landing pages.

It makes sense...successful advertisers spend more money. Can't imagine why they would change that.

Display url is supposed to match destination url domain, so I am not sure how you could test display urls that do not exist, except as others have suggested:
        domain.com/test message solution OR
        test message.domain.com

If they are variations of the same domain, they can be in the same ad group. If they are different domains, they should be in different ad groups and ideally different campaigns.
