Facebook Ads: What should be my Minimum "Potential Reach" if I want X number of clicks per day?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out what should be my minimum potential reach (500k? 1million? 2million? etc) if I want to generate 200 clicks per day? (The current bid range on Facebook is around .38 to .88 cents... I plan on bidding maximum .75 cents per click)


I know of course there's no way to get an exact number, I'm just looking for an estimate based off your experiences, as Facebook doesn't have a traffic estimator like Adwords.


Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

  • It's really tough to guess what your reach would need to be in order to get that many clicks because it depends on how engaging your ad is and what the click through rate is for that ad. If you've only got a 1% click through rate, it's going to take 20,000 views to get 200 clicks. On the other hand, if you've got a 10% click through rate, which is entirely possible in some highly-targeted campaigns, you'll only need 2,000 views.

    Once you start your campaign, your CPC can vary widely from what's suggested. If people are highly engaged with your posts, it can drop to pennies per click. On the other hand, if people ignore your post and aren't engaged with it, the CPC can rise accordingly.

      I'm just going to assume my Clickthrough rate will suck, or be average... So I'll say 1% clickthrough rate...


      That means I need 200,000 views....


      Now the question is, what percentage of the target audience will actually LOG ON to be able to view my ad....


      It's a little ridiculous Facebook doesn't have some type of traffic estimator like adwords (I know they have one in beta). I want to have my audience as targeted as possible for a *launch*, but at the same time want to make sure I get enough clicks even with a 1% clickthrough rate worst case scenario.


      I don't want to make a faux campaign just to test this and get numbers (wasting money), so hopefully someone will be able to sort of guide in the right direction (you certainly helped, and I appreciate it!).



      Maybe I should ask you this: Once I launch my campaign, and I start seeing (real time?) results, how frequently will I be able to make changes? Will I be able to see how it's trending?


      If I launch the campaign at 10am and by 11am I have 100 clicks, of course I'll know I can tighten my targeting parameters, because I'll EASILY hit the 200 click goal by the end of the day.


      If by 11am I only have 10 clicks, I'll know I need to change the picture or ad all together. (I won't need to INCREASE the "Potential Reach", because I'll start high and then go low).



      So, would I be able to make these type changes within an hour and see real time results? (if I can, my problem is solved).

  • Facebook spreads the clicks out throughout the day, so if your budget allows for a spend of $300, the $300 will be spent gradually. You'll be able to track the results in pretty close to real time. Sometimes it seems like it lags a bit because I'll see sales before the ads show any reach or clicks, but they catch up fairly quickly.

    You'll be able to make changes whenever you want. Changes to the budget are made right away. Changes to the ads have to be approved, but if you've got an account that's in good standing, they're usually made within a few minutes. When I first started using Facebook ads it would take up to an hour for my ads to get approved. Now, sometimes they're approved within a minute or less of making the change.

      A few more questions if you don't mind: Does changing the targeting options (education level, age, interests etc) of an ad happen immediately? Or must these changes be approved?


      Also, just in general... Like If you had to give an answer off the top of your head... Best strategy to maximize profits if I have a reach of 800k highly targeted people and it's ***PLENTY*** clicks to go around:


      Would you: A, try to micro target it even further to try and squeeze EVEN MORE out of the CTR / Conversions (even though it's already HIGHLY targeted for the audience you are trying to reach).


      Or B: Lower your cost Maximum CPC so you're not paying as much per click.


      Just try and assume money isn't particularly a HUGE issue, and I just want as much accurate exposure as possible. (but don't want to throw money away either).


      I know a thousand factors goes into this, and it depends on the campaign / niche and a hundred other things... But just wondering what you'd say, based off your gut feeling from your prior campaigns.

  • Changing the targeting requires approval, but it's usually pretty fast. Instead of changing the targeting of an ad I'm running, I prefer to set up a new ad in the same campaign. That way, I can still see what the other ads have done and they aren't all mixed up. You can clone ads by clicking the "Create Similar Ad" button when you have the ad open.

    If you have 800K highly targeted people and the ad is converting great, I'd leave the ad running and set up new ads where I attempt to optimize conversions even more. If money isn't a huge issue, you can let the first ad keep running while you attempt to microtarget new ads for an even better conversion rate. After a few days, you'll be able to check the reports and really break down where your conversions are coming from. I also like to check out the "Old Reports" and namely the Responder Demographics report to see what age groups and what gender is responding best.

    If you target your ads to the right people AND are promoting something they want AND have highly optimized ads and ad copy, you can get great CPC and a lot of conversions. I'm not going to reveal the market, but I have a series of ads running right now where I'm paying less than a dime per website click and it's converting like crazy.

  • Your target audience (geography, age etc.) also decide the reach. The number of potential reach shown by Facebook while you are setting up an ad is exponential. But in reality the reach is very less. Also if you ad starts to do better then Facebook itself pushes out your ad.
  • If you have well targeted people and your ads is attractive, you'll get good results, better then you can expect...
