So I just hit 100,000 impressions w/ AdSense on 8/19 - have only made $56

Shouldn't it be quite a bit more than that? I have made $56 total. It's a wordpress blog. Maybe my Ad placement isn't great? Im confused. I feel like I have a pretty good niche site. Although I am just a web designer/developer with very little marketing/adsense knowledge.

Im ready to step this up to the next level if anybody wants to give me advice. My site has only been up for about 75 days or so as well. Here is the site in case anybody is wondering. Its a car related site, geared towards faster cars.

I can offer one explanation. Your site is too good for adsense. People come to your site, they find it interesting, they stay on it until they get tired and they leave. On the other hand if you have a boring site, people see there's nothing to do, they notice the ads in prominent places and click on them to leave your site.

    $56 is too low. My sites produce between $400 - $1000 (€3 ... €8 RPM).

What you can do is make the main section wider and place a 728x90 ad at the top, under the "Latest Horsepower News" tab.

I find this size best converting, the other one is 160x600.

My guess is that HN's completely right about that.

AdSense is a "curious" monetization model in that it pays you (typically but not always very small amounts) when people leave your site, not when they stay. That doesn't mean you can't make good money from it, of course, but it tends to mean that you need (a) a lot of traffic and (b) a site-layout designed to encourage people to click ads and leave, and/or (c) a lot of sites.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I was hesitant to bombard users with Ads because I didnt want them to write it off as some spam blog site, but I notice even the high end auto sites have aggressive ad usage. I will add that horizontal ad tomorrow. thanks

    Find a different monetization method.

As always, I suggest Adsense as an absolute "last resort," when nothing else will work.

I'm not sure if adsense is the correct way to monetize your site.

If you got that many pageviews you might be better off selling the ad space to related companies. Either directly or you could use buysellads.

Also build a list from this site, and send out a newletter every now and then promoting related products.

Adsense needs to be placed on your site in such a way that at first glance it does not appear to be an Adsense link. Make it so people want to get more details on a story they may hit the Adsense link if not paying close attention. Of course you need to do this in such a way that it complies with Adsense.

Do you have analytics installed? I would bet your monthly traffic does not come close to reflecting what you would think based on your ad impressions.

I do, here is an anlytics screenshot for the last month. I don't even know what to make of these numbers, I have alot to learn about analyzing these stats and trying to make money off it. Im pretty motivated, I built the site listed above, I just need some direction to start making money. Immediate goals are $200/day through ad revenue. You guys tell me if that is realistic or not please:

The load time thing is driving me nuts. I think I need to get off a shared host and go with a cloud setup. Do you have an opinion on this?

A few weeks ago, I had so much traffic flow (700+ active visitors) that my site went down for several hours overnight. When I realized what happened in the morning I felt sick as to how much revenue I potentially lost

I already am setup with CloudFlare and have several WP plugins such as W3 total cache, etc.

Also, can you explain what bounce rate is and how I can improve it?

Your site has the ad placement of larger sites going after CPM models, trying to get as many impressions possible. You're not going to make much like that.

You're using adsense and getting paid per click, which you are not optimizing for. All of your ads are to the side and top, nowhere near the content. If you want a pretty site, don't use adsense, or don't expect many clicks.

I would put a 728x90 unit right below the video or image on top of your posts and one at the bottom of yoru posts.

If you want to get real aggressive, put the units above and below the video.

Sidebar units, in my experience, get lower CPM and thus rob higher revenue generating clicks from in-post units.

You're not really getting enough traffic to sell ad space yet.

However, sites in your space generally get pretty high CPM for the space. Anywhere from $6-10, so even now, assuming you can sell the space, you can make a few hundred bucks a month.

      I like Jason's advice.

Also, check out CJ.com which has several auto affiliate programs. TrueCar.com pays $8.00 per lead. There are others too. I'm not sure this stuff will convert on a more "entertainment" type site that you publish, but you never know.

If I were you I'd expand the site to include information about regular cars and luxury cars. The CPC can be high and if you attract people who are interested in actually learning about vehicles, you'll probably have a higher CTR and will convert automobile affiliate offers better.

By all means continue with the fun stuff because it brings in traffic, but create related but more informative content as well. This is what I do on one site and it works really well. I have plenty of eye candy, but I also have expansive articles that offer information within the niche.

Nice site, but this is not the type of site that's good for adsense.

I have sites that make $80 per day in adsense with about 2.5k visitors per day.

The best keywords to target for adsense sites are:

    1. (physical product) review
    2. (physical product) prices
    3. best (physical product)

If you try to rank in G for keywords like those and monetize with adsense you'll make great money because you'll get lots of targeted adsense ads in the same niche as yours.

A youtube video type site won't have any targeted ads so your ads will pay low and your CTR will be very low. Ad revenue won't be that great with a site like that. Maybe you could find something targeted to your site. Try CPA offers or maybe make a cool teespring shirt on your niche. And advertise that. That would work better than adsense for your site.

Guys, so much good information here, I need to keep going through each individual post and thoroughly read them.

I did make some initial adjustments to ad placement on my site, hope that helps. I am very motivated to get this done, I am working on some other blogs but I want to make sure I am not trying to expand too quick...maybe I should just focus in on this one blog and perfect it before starting another.

Also cant squeeze a 728x90 because the left column is too narrow, but I did place a 468x60 right under the post title. Like I said my goal is $200/day off of this one blog, and I would like to do it through AdSense. I am so confused and in the dark as to what the alternative ad revenue services (still not even sure what 'CPM' means) .

I have a ton of homework to do - problem is I am just not familiar with advertising on the internet so I just need a simple place to start learning and go from there. Like I said just a web design background and a passion for fast cars lol. Aside from AdSense I am completely in the dark

I don't know a huge amount about advertising however on your homepage you don't have any form of ad above the fold. So people are only going to see that ad if they scroll down at the moment.

As others have mentioned I would try testing an add out just below your banner.

Just a case of constantly testing different things to see what works best.

Make it wider so you can fit in the 728x90 unit. It trumps the 468x60 in earnings.

You should be able to do it if you fiddle with your CSS file in the WP-admin text editor.

Just make sure you copy and paste the original version of it in a text file before you start fiddling with it.

CPM on the revenue generating side is earnings per thousand impressions (adsense refers to it as RPM as in revenue per thousand impressions.)

CPM on the advertiser side is cost per thousand impressions.

You guys that are making several hundred dollars a day - is there a lot of upkeep on your sites? Obviously the big picture goal is have sites making money for you that run themselves. The problem with my blog, for example, is I have to update it multiple times daily to keep people coming in.

What? Really? I had one day alone where I had 23,000 visits in July

Is $3k for 20k visitors in a month realistic for a site like mine? (link in OP)

Thanks. Do you recommend running Yahoo ads along side with Google Ads? Or only one or the other?

My biggest difference was changing to responsive ads I literally went from $1 CPM to 5 - 6$. In case you don't know just create a new ad type and select responsive design it adjusts to the size of the screen. Hope that helps!

Hey guys I just rearranged the AdSense.

As for the top banner (below post title), I set it to 'responsive', but it is only showing text ads. Is there a huge difference between text and image ads? I either have to pick the 468x60 ad or the 728x90, but the 728 is real wide and I would have to restructure the blog which I dont think is feasable at the moment.

Im contemplating just removing all right side ads completely and putting all 3 in the post itself

    Thoughts?

Most of the advice you got is just wrong.

    1. Put 3 units on every page of your site including your homepage. (Maximum allowed by the big G) Generally one near the top of your content and one in the middle of your content. (The third is addressed in point 3)

    2. Do not bother putting ANY in the side columns, most should only be in the content area. Side columns are worthless for ads, but everyone loves to put them there.

    3. You can put one at the very top of the page, above the headline, OR right below you headline area. This placement works pretty well too.

    4. The best size is 970x90 which is a super wide leaderboard. It will still display the normal leader boards inside but it has a higher fill rate, which means more bidding, which means higher payouts to you.

    5. If you get significant mobile traffic, set up mobile placements for mobile users.
