Established Site w/ 35,000 visitors a month, Only making $60/70 a month on Adsense

Does this sound right?

The site has been active since 2008 and I post at least 3 articles each day, Monday-Friday.

It's an entertainment website focusing on actors. We have acting resources and interview actors, directors, etc.

I'm just really confused and feel like I'm never going to get to that next level.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the site

First, You have a really solid good looking website. Congrats.
Looks like you have put lot of work into it, but not as much work into monetizing it.

One thing first, as a general rule, adsense is one of the weakest way to monetize traffic. It can be used, and should be used sometimes, but there should be better ways.

Second thing : I never owned that type of "entertainement website" and i guess they typically dont bring much return per visitor and the key to make money with them is to have loads of visitors. So, yes getting some articles to get viral on FB is indeed something you should look into. (many ppl this year have been making millions making viral article websits with fb traffic, with all the buzzfeed and viralnova Look-a-like websites..)
Create content that is shareable, that has potential to go viral, and advertise it on FB.

Third thing: with 70 dollars out of 35k visitors, your earning per visitor is 0.002 . That is very low.

Even adsense, it sounds really low. It is possible that it is just because of the niche you are in. But maybe even if you stuck with adsense , you probably cold improve that number. Maybe double it at least. But even if you triple it, it is still too ******* low to justify the work you are putting on that project.

So try to find better way to monetize that site and Increase the traffic.

Food for thoughts on how to monetize better:

1 st pointer: have something to sell on your website. this alone has multiplied by 100 the revenues of some of my website (having somethign to sell will outperform so much monetization with ads)
What you could sell? uhm the website gives acting advice. What about an info product on how to become an actor (ebook, audio, video..). Having your own product will be the best choice here.

2nd pointer: give review of some products that your audience could be interested in buying and get affiliate comission from them.

3rd pointer: keep monetizing with ads, but not with adsense, or not only.. Have ads that redirect to some affiliate products. Google doesnt allow some affiliate ads to some CPA offers that are considered 'scammy', since you own the traffic source, you could send your traffic to these without needing the agreement of google (thinking of diet or muscle pills CPA trials etc...)

Thanks so much everyone for the helpful tips. Yeah, I'm putting so much time and effort into this site and I'm not getting any return... it's getting frustrating.

@yanpub, I'm using GA. Looking again, I had 35,000+ pageviews. 24K visitors. I'll try an in post ad and see how that goes.

My highest paying ad is the 300x250 box at the top of the sidebar, followed by the top 728 banner.

@RonRule - I'll try those tips as well.

Man, seriously try using combined-monetization model like selling sponsored articles+tweets+display+remnant monetization. That's what I do at smartyads.com feeling pretty happy as they have an opportunity to monetize everything at one place. BlogAds.com are good too but they offer way less. Its up to you to try both. Try them Warrior.

The ads you're showing are low paying - for these types of surfers you will trigger more remarketing ads than contextual and the contextual ones related to actors/acting will be low competition (acting schools, and content sites) so they will be low EPC's.

Try to write some content that focused on keywords that pay more. For example the diet niche has better earnings per click, so an article on topic to your site (about a celebrity who has lost weight, celebrity diet, ways aspiring actors can lose or gain weight for a role, whatever) then you can trigger some of those diet related ads to show up. When they do, if someone clicks you'll earn more.

Also, a big one, legal - lawyers (in particular DUI lawyers) are some of the highest paying. I've earned $27-108 per CLICK on some of those ads from Adsense. It's all about "training google" to show higher paying ads by covering topics that have advertisers willing to pay more. Figure out a way to work higher paying niches into the context of your articles and you can win with adsense.

With your traffic, you should be able to generste at least $1,400-2,000 per month. If you don't want to "write for adsense" then consider going with an affiliate model instead. Install an ad manager plugin and sign up as an affiliate with JVZOO or clickbank, pick out some evergreen products, and run your own banners linked to your affiliate link in the ad slots instead of adsense.

What tool do you use to track your traffic? From your Alexa rank i would not say you have 35.000 visitors a month.

With that amount of traffic i can easily make $400-500 from adsense

You need ads in post not at the bottom. Go for image and text ads. 2 ads , 468x60 in the post content should do the trick.

Really, just start posing your affiliate offers and/or CPA offers instead of that, way better monetization possibility!

    Hi,
when you have a post about a movie, I also expect an add for the movie on DVD/BlueRay.
You could include a link to the product on Amazon.
Or when writing about an actor, create a link searching for movies with this actor on amazon.

Just had a look at the post about Chris Pratt and Jurassic Park and didn't find anything like that.

You could also create something like an actor profile, listing all his movies which link then to amazon.

Good luck and please report back on how things developed for you.

    Hi,

When you want to post some comments about a movie then you should post a link about the movie & you should write something about the background of the movie.

If you cannot monetize it well, you can sell this website on flippa for 20,000 bucks.
