Should You Bother Protecting Your EBook From Electronic Thieves?

There are two kinds of eBook thieves. There's the casual thief, and the committed thief. The end result in both instances is that your intellectual property has been stolen. What can you do about it? What should you do about it, if anything? Okay, let's break this down in to two parts.

Let's start with the committed thief. This is someone who will do whatever it takes to get your eBook without paying for it. Not much you can do. Why? Because if you offer a money back guarantee, all they have to do is buy it and then ask for a refund. If you deny the refund, they can call their credit card company and initiate a chargeback proceeding that will be costly for you to defend against. In the alternative, they can search for ways to access your eBook without paying for it. We don't have the space to get into all the different ways this can happen, but trust me, there are people out there with nothing to do all day but look for ways to cheat you.

Not much you can do about a committed thief.

On the other side of the spectrum are casual thieves. People who'd otherwise pay for your eBook and be good customers, but they can't fight the temptation of trying to see if they can get it free first. You can dissuade the casual thieves by taking precautions to ensure that your eBook isn't freely accessible from your website. So should you bother trying to protect your materials from thieves? Yes, you should, but don't become obsessed with doing so. Spend most of your time focused on creating new products and marketing.
