If you build a list with freebie seekers and tire-kickers, who will grab anything you gift them for free, but not care enough to explore stuff that's much more valuable if they have to pay for it, you've lost the game before you begin.

And even with the right kind of prospect on your list, unless you can make them the kind of offer that will have them pulling out their wallet/credit card and BUYING, you won't reach anywhere near your highest potential as a list marketer.

Having built email lists and marketed to them for nearly 15 years, I have had bad experiences from ignoring (or not knowing) these basic rules. In 2003, I once had to simply delete and abandon an email list of over FIFTEEN THOUSAND subscribers - because they were not ready to buy anything, and only wanted me to give them valuable content for free.

That's a list building dead-end - and a heavy price to pay for all that extensive and time-consuming effort that goes into building an opt-in email list of any size.

You can avoid getting into such a situation by carefully planning out your list's strategy and purpose, and designing your opt-in process to attract only the ideally qualified prospects to subscribe - while keeping away the others.

No doubt other factors matter in maximizing your list profit potential, such as ensuring delivery of your emails, relationship building with subscribers and great, compelling copy-writing.

But the 2 factors I mention are KEY to the success or failure of any list building venture.
