How to Research a Niche

The only way to make a profit is to either get clicks, leads, or sales. In order to get those, you need traffic. The most powerful method of getting traffic is from the search engines because that is where people go in order to find websites that are similar to what they are searching for. In order to rank in the search engines, you need good content as well as a niche that is easy to rank high in.
For example, rather than trying to rank for "shoes", you may want to go for "black shoes" or better yet "black leather shoes". That way, there is less competition. Would you rather compete against thousands of different website or less than twenty? There are many steps that are required to find a good niche which are:

1. Find a specific niche - As I said above, you need to find a niche that is very specific making it easier to rank in. Get a list of three to four word niches to rank for. I recommend using Google Keyword Tool unless you have a better tool. Search for something broad then go down to terms with less than 5,000 monthly searches. Gather about 20 names and let's move onto the next step.

2. Do they have low competition? - In order to rank in the search engines you need to make sure there aren't any big competitors or a lot of moderate ones. To get a good idea, type your niche in quotes in Google. If it was black leather shoes then you would type "black leather shoes" in the Google search engine. If the exact phrase count is less than 200,000 then you're golden. Now, do a Google search without quotes and look at your top ten competitors. If you already see a bunch of niche websites up there then it may be game over. But check the popularity of other sites and their link count using the Yahoo Site Explorer. If it is less than 100 then you can rank there easily within a month, maybe even less!

3. Domain Name - This is a very important aspect of ranking for a niche. Google seems to like exact match domains and will rank them higher in most cases. Whatever domain registrar you use, search for the exact match with no dashes or anything and only look for the dot com, net, or org extension. Any other extensions usually don't go too far unless major link building is involved. If my niche were "black leather shoes" then I would register "blackleathershoes.com" or whatever extension is available out of the three. You want to look for a dot com first, then dot net, and lastly dot org; in that order.

Now that you have your niche ready, it is time to build a website. Creating these websites can be time consuming depending on how well you want it to perform.
