So what is viral internet marketing and is it worth trying to make something go viral? Well before you start trying to pull silly stunts on camera and posting them on YouTube, lets determine why you would want your content to 'go viral' and how to reach the right target audience.
Many of you reading this are probably running your business from home and so really your reason for trying to make a viral piece of content is so that you can drive more traffic and sales to your site. Let me tell you this first, you don't need to make something go viral for your internet marketing efforts to pay off but if you continue to write good content, learn about SEO and social media and keep these viral internet marketing tips in mind, you will be getting plenty of traffic combined with some viral activity within your chosen niche.
Viral Internet Marketing Tip #1

Think about your goal. A lot of people, not including you and I of course, think that going viral means making one of these videos on YouTube that gets millions and millions of views. That should not be your goal here. Your goal is to get lots of views within your target niche. For me, that's the home business, affiliate marketing, internet marketing and network marketing industry.
Do I want lots of bored adolescent boys watching my video and sharing it with their mates on Facebook? NO! Why not? Cause they don't have credit cards, they aren't interested in starting a serious home business and don't care about what I can teach them. I want people that are actively involved in learning about internet marketing to be watching and sharing my videos, that's what will help build my list and my income.
So what is your goal? To have a piece of content that is shared by others through your niche and continues to spread without you putting in the work.
Viral Internet Marketing Tip #2

You've got to give value. I've seen people trying to create a viral video for their product. In most cases, that just won't work unless you make a total fool of yourself, in which case it's probably those teenagers that will be watching your video, not your target audience. The best way to encourage people to share your content is by providing pure value, with a link to your capture page or opt in form at the end of your post/video. If you are pushing your product all through your content, it's not going to make people want to share it with their friends or associates.
Talk about the things that they care about, speak from the heart about how you know the problems they are facing. Maybe you are talking to people about how they need more leads for their business, or how to manage their time more effectively. Give great value and people will share it more.
Viral Internet Marketing Tip #3

ASK. Ask people to share, say it, spell it out. Humans are funny creatures and you will find that you get more action by actually giving people the next step. So when you have created something you think is of great value, that you know people will have enjoyed, simply say to them "If you liked this, please click the share button, thanks!".
Where to get them to share? Facebook, twitter, digg and stumble are my favourites. Make sure you submit your content to these places yourself first to start the process. Stumble can be especially viral if you do it right. I once did an article called "Just Keep Swimming" with a video from Finding Nemo on it. That post alone pulled in 600 visits that day just from the viral effect of stumble and because I had put the right keywords in stumble, it appeared in the feeds of my target market. That's a TON of free leads for one simple submission to Stumble.
So what's next? Get creating content, and most importantly learn how to get that content in front of thousands to give it the best chance of spreading on it's own.
