1. First choose the market you want to create your product for. Ideally it will have two main criteria: a market that has a lot of passionate people in it that are willing to spend money, and, something you know something about or at least are interested in learning more about.
2. Once you decide what market you want to get involved in you need to do some market research. Figure out what others in that market are offering to their customers and model that for your product.
This means what type of product do they have, how do they deliver the product, do they offer a membership site, how are they pricing their product? Once you know this, don't worry about reinventing the wheel, if they are making money just follow these trends and do it better.
