Alexa is a widely popular gauge or measure in which webmasters determine their popularity in terms of rank in the web. In Alexa are listings of websites in the internet, all sorted out by the traffic it generates and it arranges the traffic rankings by analysis of the web usage of websites using the toolbar.

The popularity of Alexa ranking is so far and wide that it is used by many marketers as a determining factor on where to place their advertisements. Many affiliate marketers use the Alexa ranking for their ad placements and it is also a gauge on directories for content submissions.

It is not unusual to see webmasters to find out the Alexa ranking of websites that link to their sites, knowing that popularity, ranking and relevance are determining factors used by the search engines in accessing their links. This is how valuable Alexa is to a web marketer.

There are elements in a website that Alexa measure, and also are used by many web marketers as basis for whatever marketing objectives they have. The following are these elements:

  • Website traffic rank is taken from historical traffic data of Alexa toolbar users and this is based on a three month period usage. Other traffic data sources are also used in combination of this toolbar usage to determine the traffic rank.
  • User's reach is also used in the traffic ranking computations which are derived from the number of users who visit the site and the number of pages on the site that are viewed by these users. This aggregate data is also based on a three month period.
  • Websites and web hosts are treated as one, like websites within the same domain URL are treated as the same. Websites also with similar contents are treated as one site for Alexa ranking purposes.
  • Page views are also considered by Alexa in the ranking calculations in the sense that it is a measure on the number of pages viewed by the site visitors. However, if multiple views on that page are made by the same user on a particular day, that page view will only be counted as one, in order not to cheat the website.
  • Traffic trends are also used as basis for calculations and this is done on a daily basis. On the other hand, this daily traffic trends and rank is computed on an aggregate three month period and is used in the overall computation for site ranking.
  • Consistent traffic is used as basis in the website ranking computation and Alexa uses the three month period as basis for the popularity in ranking. Websites having consistent traffic for three months aggregate will be those sites showing up high on the popularity rankings in Alexa.
