One of the most common questions I get about list building is "What autoresponder should I use?" Since this is a common question on forums, I decided to release a full-blown answer to this question.

Basically, there are two main types of autoresponders. One is a hosted service. The service does all the legwork for you in maintaining the servers and generally ensuring that your emails get delivered to your subscribers. The other option is to host an autoresponder on yourself, on your own servers. The second option is definitely more risky since you are not protected. Yes, you don't have to pay monthly fees, but your deliverability is not secure and if you lose your list, you are not protected.

I'd recommend that you use a hosted option to build your list with. Use a professional autoresponder like Aweber or Get Response. Personally, those are my two favorites. I have been leaning more towards Get Response recently as I believe they have gotten better in recent times. Aweber is charging more these days so if you want a high-value option, Get Response might be the way to go.

I use both of those services. I use Aweber to capture confirmed opt-ins while I use Get Response for single opt-in leads. I use Get Response for co-registration campaigns and pay per click campaigns because the confirmation rates from visitors coming in from these sources is usually low. So that's a secret: use different autoresponders to suit your needs for different traffic generation strategies.
