As an Internet marketer, you are always looking for ways to get your content out there in front of your prospective customers. A podcast is like an audio blog where you can share your knowledge and passion about your area of expertise with your audience. With podcasting you are delivering valuable audio content that your audience can consume at their leisure, and which positions you as an expert or thought leader in your industry or niche.

Many marketers ignore podcasting because they think it's complicated or requires a lot of expensive equipment. The goal of this article is to show you just how simple and easy it can be to start your own podcast that will help you generate a ton of highly targeted traffic, give you lots of credibility and boost your visibility in your market.

What equipment do you need to do a podcast?
You will need as high quality podcasting mic as you can afford. You will need headphones to monitor yourself and your guests if you are doing an interview. You'll need podcasting software for recording and editing. If you are using a Windows, Mac or Linux PC Audacity is free, open source audio editing software.

For Mac users, there is Apple Logic Express for multitrack recording and editing.

How do you produce your podcast episodes?
You will start by creating a plan for each episode. Make an outline of the topics that you want to cover, and include information about any resources you might talk about in that episode for inclusion in the show notes later. If you are going to interview someone, you will have to make sure that they have the correct call-in number and time for the interview, or if they will be live in-studio with you, will have to make sure that you have an extra mic and headset for your guest.

Once the episode is planned and you've written the outline it's time to record the show. After recording you can edit the audio to get rid of excessive audio clutter, long pauses and out-takes. Whatever podcasting software you will be using will have a tutorial that you can follow that will show you how to edit your audio and save it as an .mp3 file.

How do I publish my podcast?
Fill out your ID3 tags on your .mp3 file. The ID3 tags store important information about your podcast including the host's name, the podcast title, genre, date of creation, website address. When you are saving your audio file to the.mp3 format you will have to opportunity to fill out the ID3 tags. Make sure that you do this so that if someone downloads your podcast episode they will always know how to find you to get more information.

I recommend that you buy a domain name for your podcast and set up a blog where you can post show notes, links, and images related to each episode.

Once the blog is set up you will then create the RSS feed to your podcast so that your listeners can subscribe to the feed and automatically download the new episodes as you release them. (FeedBurner is a great solution for this.)

How do you people find out about your podcast?
Now that you've got your first episode, "in the can," you will now want to make sure that people can find out about your podcast.

You can promote your podcast by getting listed in iTunes, and the dozens of other podcast directories on the Internet. People visit these directories looking for podcasts to subscribe to. When visitors who are looking for a podcast using your keywords finds your show, if they listen and subscribe they will most likely visit your site to learn more about your business creating a nice flow of targeted traffic.
