Search engines are not the be all and end all when it comes to traffic generation. There's a whole world out there that does not involve search engines when it comes to driving traffic to your website. For example, there are other traffic generation strategies like:

Article marketing

Forum marketing

Traffic exchanges

Joint ventures

And so on.

The problem with search engine marketing, especially search engine optimization to try to rank at the top, is that things can change really quickly, especially when the likes of Google or Yahoo change their algorithms. Many website owners have found their websites wiped off the first page of their key search terms simply because the big boys like Google changed their search engine algorithms. And this happens every few months.

You do not want to leave your rice bowl at the hands of someone else do you?

Now I'm not suggesting not using search engine optimization strategies at all. I personally use it myself and I make hundreds of dollars every month from ranking well in the search engines alone. However, you have to use a diversified marketing strategy.

Write articles, create joint ventures and post on classified ads. Choose at least 5 traffic generation strategies. This way, when you lose one traffic source, you'd still have another 4. And there's still social networking, video marketing, blogging, directory posting and so on. There are dozens of ways you can drive traffic to your site online - use them. When you have multiple traffic sources, that's when your income is truly safeguarded.
