Here are some products you can give away to start building your opt-in list:
1) Ebooks
An ebook has a highly perceived value because it contains information that is packaged in one neat document that can be referred to at any point in time. Many ebooks sell for higher than paperback books simply because the information is not sold in traditional bookstores.
2) Audio recordings
Audio recordings are great because people can listen to them in their car or even in the gym. It works well for products like self-improvement, where people would like to refer to the material again and again for re-enforcement purposes.
3) Videos
Videos have a very high perceived value because they take more effort to create and people are becoming more accustomed to viewing videos online.
4) CD products
You can package your audio recordings or videos into a CD and give it away. Of course, you'd have to charge shipping fees to the customer to cover your costs. But that's all they'll pay for something that is very high in value.
5) Ecourse
Alternatively, you can also give away a free email ecourse that is set to go out every few days.
Personally, the best products to give away are ebooks. They are the easiest to create and the medium that most people respond to. From my experience, there are more people who read online than who watch videos or listen to audio recordings, for the moment at least.
