One of the most frustrating things to happen to an online business owner is to face 'downtime'. This is the time when a website is down from the web and is not accessible to anyone. It can be especially infuriating when the downtime goes on for a very long period, for example several hours or even half a day.

Here's some things you can do when your website is down:

1. Contact your web host. Usually when my websites are down are for more than an hour, I will contact my support department and ask them what is happening. Try to make use of your web host's live chat facility (if there is any), email them, or call them if possible. Chances are, many people are also contacting the support department trying to find out what is wrong, so don't panic if you don't receive a reply.

2. Be mentally prepared for the worst. Some servers might have been hacked into and you might have lost all your data. Always be prepared for this. If you are reading this now, go and backup your files right now!

3. Look for new web host options. This is a drastic measure and one that should only be taken when you are frustrated with your web host for having regular downtimes. Look for more reliable options if that is the case. Read reviews on the web, and if possible, don't use an 'obscure' web host provider as they are usually less professional and less reliable. You have been warned!
