LinkedIn.com is a powerful social media platform designed to meet the needs of business professionals around the world. When it comes to networking online, LinkedIn is the destination when you are looking to build or expand your professional network, get more exposure in your field of expertise, and establish your credibility in a specific topic area. In this article we are going to take a look at LinkedIn Answers, which is just one of the ways that you can leverage this networking platform to expand your reach and connect with prospective customers and clients.

How to get started with LinkedIn Answers
From your LinkedIn profile click on the, 'More,' link in the top navigation bar. 'Answers,' is the first option.

You'll see a box at the top of the page with a field in it where you can either ask a question, or you can click on the gold, 'Answer Now' button to answer an open question.

Below that box you'll see a list of open questions from your network. These are questions from a variety of topics that people who are connected to you are asking. You can browse those questions and find one that you can answer intelligently and succinctly, or you can look to the right at the long list of categories and choose your topic area to see what questions have been asked there.

Further down the page you'll see a running list of the week's top experts. When those people answer questions a green star appears by their name along with the designation: "Best Answers in. . ." followed by their area of expertise.

LinkedIn offers a tangible way for you to be seen as an expert. All you have to do is follow their instruction to find questions that are suited to your expertise and answer them. Each time the user who posed the question picks yours as the best answer, you gain an expertise point. The more points you rack up, the higher your name will appear on the lists of experts in your category.

This is why it really pays to take the time to find relevant questions and answer them in a satisfactory way.

When you answer a question a little box will appear beside your answer containing your name, to what degree you are connected to the person who asked the question, and a link that will allow readers to see all of the other answers that you have given. If you are an expert, the green star will appear along with the category of your expertise.

Keeping in touch with new questions
If you have set a goal to become an expert in a particular topic, you will want to check in to LinkedIn consistently to answer questions. To save you time and effort, you can subscribe to the RSS feed for that category.

To find the RSS feed, click on the category name from the list in the menu on the right side of the page. Scroll to the bottom and you'll see the option to, "Subscribe to new questions in:" (followed by that category) Once you subscribe to the categories you want to follow, all you have to do is check your RSS reader each day to see if there are any new questions for you to go to LinkedIn to answer.
