The consumer marketplace is full of the latest and greatest ideas and designs. If you don't believe that, I dare you to watch one commercial break on television or walk down one aisle at a local store and not see something that touts itself as "new". Product creation has been around as long as there have been consumers but it wasn't until a few decades ago that advertisers and businesses began to understand the importance of product placement.

What is Product Placement?

Simply put, product placement is a crucial step in the success of the product creation process because newer products are often overlooked unless they are attached to a major brand name. By placing your new product in such a way that it becomes subconsciously tied to a better established existing product you are taking advantage of a psychological need and addressing it on a subconscious level.

Let's look at an example:

Bob creates a new widget that will peel and core an apple automatically. Because he got the idea while walking through the produce section of his local supermarket it made perfect sense that the best placement for this product would be next to the apples in the produce aisle. By adding an image to the label of an apple pie being made, Bob also realized that this product could be placed next to pie shells in the freezer section.

Beginning to understand how product placement can help your product succeed or fail and why it is important to consider it as part of the product creation process? One final example for you: When you go to the grocery store, what are the two things you always see at the checkout line? Magazines and candy, right? If you don't think that is intentional, think about what you do when you need to kill two or three minutes while waiting in line.

My money says that you pick up a magazine and flip through it and your kids start asking for a candy bar.
