Selecting a domain name shouldn't be a grueling and complex process for launching your blog or website. However, it's easy to select the wrong domain name if you don't do the correct research.

You have two options in selecting a name for your site or blog. You can select a domain name based on keywords or branding. If you choose to use the branding strategy your selection will be focused on what you are attempting to promote. But if your selection is going to based on keyword optimized domain names, then you have several more elements to consider when selecting the appropriate domain name.

Exact Match Domain Names

An exact match domain, or EMD, is a url that describes a particular keyword or keyword phrase. EMDs will increase your site ranking in the search engine results pages (SERPS) for the keyword being matched. It makes it possible to rank for the given keyword with far fewer backlinks than competitor sites with similar content.

For instance, a search "golf clubs" on Google brings up golfclubs.com on the first page of Google. Golfclubs.com is not listed first and has dickssportinggoods.com, globalgolf.com, golfsmith.com, tgw.com, and callawaygolf.com all listed before it. However, it is still on the first page of Google.

For a domain name to be regarded as an exact match domain name it has to meet the following standards:

1. The top-level domain extension should be a.com,.net or.org. These extensions were listed in order of preference. Ideally, you'd like to find the.com version if it's available, but.net and.org versions work also (for the most part..com domains have more credibility with searchers, and they also have more resell value). A.org domain, perfectly legal use, and commonly used for business purposes. Top-level domain names such as.edu,.info or.us can be use with EMDs but you won't get any SEO juice from them.

2. Should you use hyphens? A hyphenated domain can be used but try to not to use more than two. You can also add a "stop word" to the beginning or end of the keyword. What is a stop word? It is a word that Google more or less ignores in a keyword when it's considered to not have any actual content. Some commonly used stop words are "my", "how to", "top" "and", "of", "best", etc. An awesome modifier to use to a keyword for higher clickthrough rates is "best

3. The spelling and word order must be exact. If the keyword is "hair accessories", then accessorieshair.com or accessoriesforhair.com, while still valuable (using great keywords in your domain name is always good SEO), but don't have the same impact as an EMD.

How to Locate the Most Valuable Keywords for an EMD

One option is to use a researched keyword list into a bulk domain name search tool and see which ones have.com,.net and.org versions still available. Most of your results won't have many version available, but your goal is to find one or two any way.
