Kindle Success Secrets: The Importance of the Title

One of the most important factors in your success with Kindle is the title that you give to your book. A great title can create sales for even a fairly mediocre book but a bad title will kill your chances of making sales even if the content is good. Let’s take a look now at why titles are so important and what you can do to improve your own titles.

Copywriting guru Joe Sugarman noted once that the most important thing in writing good copy is the headline. Unless they read your headline they are not going to go any further and read the rest of your copy. The title of your book is the equivalent of your headline and without a good one nobody is going to bother reading the description or downloading the sample to see if it is something that might interest them.

When publishers produce a book they will often spend months working over the title because they know how important it is for book sales. You only have a few words to work with and it must convey the main hook of you book in a way which is appealing. One of the most interesting examples of how a book title can be created comes from Timothy Ferris and his book “The Four Hour Work Week”. In order to find the right title for his book Ferris actually tested different book titles by creating Google Adword Ads for each of them. The one which got the highest click through rate (which was in this case the four hour work week) was the one that was finally chosen. Interestingly his publisher didn’t actually like this title and it was only when presented with the irrefutable evidence that this was the most popular title that it was used.

People like the idea of easy solutions to their problems. One way to approach your title is to first create the main idea of your title and then add on one of the following words: With Ease, Simply, Overnight, Easily, In Three Steps, In One Week. For example people who want to lose weight know that they can lose that weight what worries them is how difficult it is going to be or that they will have to wait a long time to get results. But if the title of your book is “Lose Ten Pounds in One Week or Less” Then they know they are going to be able to get the result that they want quickly.
