It’s no secret that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the powerful tools on internet marketing.

If you already have your website or you are about to make one, one of the first steps you should make is to make sure it is optimized for the search engines, especially Google. Although there are other factors that will have a larger bearing on your site positioning, making sure your ‘on page’ optimization is up to scratch can help you climb those last few positions.

Web Address
Most of the time it’s going to be hard but still if you have a chance you can include keywords within the name of your website. For example, if your keyword phrase was “web design for beginners” than the ideal name for your website would be – webdesignforbeginners.com.

Other example, you can have something like: www.designtool.com/webdisignforbeginners.html. Thought the problem with this example is that when you want to submit this site to web site directories, many of them would only allow you to submit the part “www.designtool.com”. Just want to make that clear.

It’s very important to know how important the title and other on page factors on your site are. Once you see your site on the 3rd or 4rth page of Google, changing some very basic things on your actual webpage will make you jump sky high above the others. Keep in mind that there is a huge financial difference between being on 1st page of Google and being on 2nd.

Title
In the Title Tag towards the top of your code, you need to make sure that the keywords you want your website to be searched for are in your title. Keep in mind that the more words you give to your tittle, the less attention Google will give to each word. So avoid the mistake of stuffing too many words at the early stage of your website. For example, if you want to be on the first page of Google with the term “design for beginners”, then just have that term rather than something like ” Check out my website to learn design for beginners and Photoshop secrets“.

Meta Tags
It’s debatable how much weight these really carry. You really want to stuff as many words related to the topic as you can so they at least feature somewhere in your site.

Heading (H1 style)
It’s really important to have “Heading1” (H1 tag) towards the top of your page. Also this should include your keywords which you are targeting. Especially, this is important if you’re doing blogging. Obviously you may want to have a few more words in there to make the heading more meaningful. For example “web design for beginners, make your first web banner.”

First Paragraph
Make sure to include your keywords in the first paragraph in your page. Try to
include the words as close to the beginning of the paragraph as possible but don’t include the keywords that you have already used, for example, if the first sentence of the paragraph is “web design for beginners” then skip it and use the next one. Google doesn’t like keyword repetition.

Remaining Paragraphs
Lightly sprinkle your keywords throughout the rest of the text on the page. Use at least one sentence per each paragraph that you think is the most catchy but try to not make it obvious that you are just stuffing keywords in for the sake of it.
Bold / Italic / Underline

Use those on each keyword. Also bold the keyword phrase 2 or 3 more times in the page. If you prefer, you can use underline or italic but most tend to use bold for this. This helps Google identify which keywords you are targeting.
Images

It is strongly recommended that you put several images into your blog/page. They always catch user’s attention. If they see an image straight away which specifically relates to what they were searching for, it makes a mental connection with them.
