The category that you are featured in can play a significant role in whether or not your book gets attention or not. In this guide we will look on how to select a category where you have a high probability of being featured on the best seller list.

Choosing your category should start before you have a word of your book written. You want to make sure that any work that you either write or have created has the maximum amount of success.

In order to do this when looking for ideas you want to perform a little market research into how competitive that category is. The ideal category is one where there are plenty of buyers and not too much competition (such a thing does exist!).

Start by looking at how well the top twenty books in that category are selling. If the number one book is sub 10,000 and the number 20 book is under 20,000 then you probably have a pretty hot category.

This might be a good category to enter but you also want to make sure that you are going to be able to break into it. In order to determine this you should check out the #100 book on the best seller list for that category. If it is higher than 100,000 then you should find it too difficult to enter that market even with minimal outside promotion.

The higher the best seller rank for the #100 book the more work you are going to have to do to enter that market. This is not to say you shouldn’t enter more competitive categories but that you will need to put in a greater marketing effort in order to gain traction.

Another trick you can use it to get featured in one of the “secret” categories. When publishing your book and choose where you would like to feature your book it will not always correspond with the exact categories on Kindle. In fact there are certain categories on Kindle that you can’t opt in to be featured on. As such competition in these categories tends to be fairly light.

In order to be featured in these categories your book needs to be tagged with that category. Write the category as a tag for your book and then get a dozen or more people to agree with this tag. You should find that your book is moved over to these less competitive categories.
