SEO is marketed as a "silver bullet" solution. Don't get me wrong, I love SEO. I have been doing SEO for 7 years now and I still make a lot of money from "free" Google traffic. I just don't believe anyone can do it. And I certainly believe if you want a job replacing income, that you can't do it with SEO.

- SEO is easy. Anyone can do it and you can see results overnight
- More is better. More sites, more backlinks, more content (no matter what kind of content as long as it's unique)
- You're gonna be rich
- There is a magic software that will make it happen and all you have to do is lay back and count your money
- Automation is key
- You can buy your way to the top without worrying about what will happen in the future. It's Googleproof...
- It's free (yet you have to pay for services, software, etc..)
- There are ways of getting fast results, but hey are not usually covered in the most IM products and open forums. If too many people catch on to a particular loophole, it usually doesn't last long. Unless you're able to make the most out of it, it's not worth it
- It's tough. Google changes the rules very often. What worked last year may very well not work today. Unless you're someone really passionate about search engines and willing to adapt every 6 months to whatever Google is cooking, you're probably not going to make any significant income.
- Automation hurts your site more than anything else. Most backlink services will attract a penalty from Google that may never be lifted.
- Newbies mostly fail at SEO due to the misinformation that goes around. The real way of learning SEO is by experimenting 50% of time and doing what works the rest of 50% of time. It's tough, time consuming... and really not for someone who's new at internet marketing. If you really want to play the game, you need a coach that has great results and willing to help out. Usually it's not cheap and hard to find.
